What If…? hasn’t lost any of its sense of fun, and its bizarre MCU mash-ups are cleverer than before. But the show’s gradual reveal of an overarching storyline is starting to become too predictable. .... It’s nothing that a Marvel fan should turn their nose up at just yet, but it is more of a “try to act surprised” holiday gift than a “how did you know?!” holiday gift.
Thankfully, What If…? isn’t all that concerned with the big picture. It’s created its own arcs and stakes in this animated multiverse. And if this is the end, What If…? leaves its story in a good place once all is said and done.
Really well done! The first few episodes they pack a lot of story in each episode, so the pacing is a bit off, but by the end the episodes get pretty funny and tie together in a really cool way at the end.
What If…? is a fun exploration of alternate versions of the MCU, with animation that does a good job of conveying the action that’s baked into the MCU recipe.
"What If...?" might be the most Marvel Comics thing that Marvel Studios has done, translating the what-might-have-happened-if comic-book concept from page to screen, with all its geekiness intact. The highly stylized animation and access to key actors enhances the fun, creating an extremely logical Disney+ add-on to an increasingly packed multi-verse.
What If...? is trying to both have its cake and eat it too. That's not to say the season is not enjoyable. It's a lot of fun, and several of the episodes are rich and compelling, making me wish the whole season was just that. It's frustrating, however, when the potential for it to be just that much greater is visible but seems to be lying just out of reach.
Marvel Studios’ first animated series is a stylish narrative experiment with fun twists and surprises — nothing more, nothing less. For the uninitiated, it’s impenetrable.
What If…? is competently made. Like the majority of Marvel Studios’ product, though, it refuses to take any real risks. The action is loud when it needs to be loud, fast when it needs to be fast. But the dialogue is dreary and witless; the animation – 3D graphics styled to look 2D – all too stiff and inexpressive. ... Perhaps the biggest problem has to do with the storytelling. All three of the early episodes have plenty of plot, but no narrative.
3 out of the 9 episodes feel like its stories were well thought and are fun watching. Doctor Strange episode is probably the best in the series because you can feel the weight of the character's thoughts. Thor's episode is funny, but makes no sense at all. And one of the last episodes also fits here.
Some of the other stories are simply not even worthy being there and, well, they are, and they're not told in a good way (Killmonger's episode, for example). You also put Gamora without even an episode for her, just throw her in there and make a team that isn't even close to powerful to face against a major threat.
Here's hope for a better season 2, if one ever comes out.
