[The Upshaws] juices the multicamera-family-sitcom model with fresh dynamics, depth, and genuine laughs.
And no, the “mom who gets things done while the dad gets to mess up and around” conceit isn’t exactly brand new territory for a sitcom to tread. But when a show is this willing to find new ways to make such tropes more grounded and relatable, it’s worth checking out.

I just discovered this series and I absolutely love it! I'm sad I only found it now and it's been on for years already!!! Epps and Sikes... oh my! Too many laughs! I really love the reality of the show and the dynamic of the characters. I hope this series continues!!!

By the end of these eight episodes, the show demonstrates why it put the mother through the ringer, setting up an interesting arc for season four. It's just a bit of an admitted slog to get to that point. Still, although this one hits a bit heavier than earlier installments, it nevertheless manages to show how funny life is, even when it's a bummer.
It’s not the funniest sitcom out there, but there’s a lot of warmth and a lot of character-driven stories and humor.
All The Upshaws’ jokes might well be a couple decades old, but there’s also a laudable attempt here at a different kind of family sitcom.
The Upshaws has “good sitcom bones”, but is so saddled with tired plots and dialogue it just makes for a show that feels like it’s already stale, even though it just started.
To say that “The Upshaws” is stuck in the ’70s doesn’t quite do it. The 1970s? Or the 1870s? ... The jokes are entrenched in racial stereotyping and clichés. “The Upshaws” was meant to be transgressive, one imagines. It’s harder to imagine who’ll be laughing.
Great family drama about a lower-middle class Black family. Kim Shields and Wanda are fire. The two little girls are cute snd funny. The men at the shop have great chemistry together, and the older son is hot. He has a great story line. I’m happy to see LGBT representation in the Black community. I’m also glad to see toxic masculinity snd step families addressed.

One of the few shows on Netflix that are actually funny. Great chemistry between a cast that are relatable without being caricatures or complete stereotypes. If you're a fan of shows like Sanford and Son or My Wife and Kids, you'll probably enjoy this. I do have one issue, not with the show, but with the reception of the show. The disparity between user ratings and critic ratings is so vast, it makes one wonder about the credibility of either.

"The Upshaws" (S01, 10eps, 1/2hr, Netflix) is a fairly harmless sitcom featuring a "young" black family trying to make ends meet. The "young" is questionable since the parent stars are in their 50s but the kids range from elementary school to UPS driver. The humor is ethnically cutting and sharp, and they use the N-word on themselves more than a few times, but you'll hear no calls to cancel them or their show, because racial hypocrisy is a thing. Speaking of which, the few Euro-Americans on the show are either stupid, mean, or both so that's fresh. Look, the show is decent enough to keep your attention and make you laugh at times while it attempts to show black-culturally relevant issues in a humorous light. The season finale has a mildly interesting hook for a second season that's been granted.
