This line of 3D Classics has been a great tribute to retro gaming, so far serving up 3D enhanced versions of some of the finest titles in SEGA's large catalogue of wonderful games, and, naturally, gives new fans a try at discovering them for the first time.

3D Sonic 2 is one of the best 2D platformers from the 16-bit era, and this "SEGA 3D Classic" version offers the very same game with new additions like the "Ring Keeper Mode", making it a very enjoyable (and cheap) trip to the past of one of the most iconic characters in SEGA's history. And, indeed, to one of its best games.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a game of massive highs and crushing lows. Thankfully, M2 and Sega have made those lows much less frustrating in this 3D version, making this the definitive way to play this imperfect, but essential, classic.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is quite simply the greatest conversion that could be done with Sega's magnificent platformer. The best Sonic game of all time lost none of its appeal during its journey to the 3DS and is still as delightful to play as it was over 20 years ago.

M2 has once again produced a commendable presentation of a classic for the 3DS with 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It continues to be a fun game after all these years (and way better than whatever Sega's been churning out with the blue guy the last couple of years), and the 3D conversion is simply fantastic. Vintage Sega fans – and new players as well – shouldn't miss this gem.

It has not aged perfectly, but Sonic The Hedgehog 2 still remains one of the finest 2D platformers ever made. The 3D Classics treatment gives both fans and newcomers the possibility to play this gem in its definitive version, but also lets us think about the fall of this iconic character.

One of the finest games of its age, but still a 1992 title that has been bought and played eight million times. So, take that for what it is.

If you liked the original Sonic 2, this is a must buy, but don't be fooled, there is nothing new here, thankfully. It is literally the same game ported over, a game I have happily bought a dozen times on a dozen different systems now. Expand

Oh how I long for the simpler plug n play days of the Genesis, Super NES, Neo Geo, and Turbo Grafx 16. There was something about that era that's missing in Today's world of online required, DLC and patch mandated rush jobs...It's called life! 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for 3DS gushes life and sparkles with an inner quality that humbles most current games. Fun, challenging, and infinitely repayable, this is an absolute must buy for any proud 3DS owner. I've become such an M2 fanboy that I would purchase a cartridge system if they were to release one. Please add this game to your collection poste haste! Now all I need is a 3D Sega Strider (Genesis version) and 3D Golden Axe. You keep making them Sega/M2, and we'll keep buying them. Thank you♡ Expand

Like I said in 3D Sonic 1, it's a sonic game, you either like it, or you hate it. And I can honestly say that it is an all-around fun time for me.

My favorite moments are when Tails gets lost or dies, and I play a guessing game of when/where he is going to reappear, and he always surprises me when I least expect it. The game is also difficult, but trial and error (and the any-time saving mechanic) get me through it.

    Can't wait for 3D Sonic 3 & Knuckles (hopefully)

As far as 2015 emulation goes, it really isn't bad at all. A few innaccuracies here and there, but they're very sparse and won't detract from your overall experience.

There are only two (legal) ways to play the 1992 classic on the 3DS family of systems, either through the 2009 DS game Sonic Classic Collection, comprising of the four classic games and S&K's respective lock-ons, or this port. If you just want to play Sonic 2, then this is the one for you. It's much cheaper, looks and sounds a whole lot better (even with the few blips in the audio emulation quality here and there), has more customisation features, special unlockables, etc. A very solid port of the game indeed. The emulation here is also miles better than that of Classic Collection, which makes sense because this port came out half a decade after it, but still.

As for the core Sonic 2 game itself, I personally have never liked it as much as many of the other early Sonic games. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game at all, but if I had to pick between Sonic 2 and pretty much any other major Sonic title released around the same era, I wouldn't choose Sonic 2. But it's a solid play, even if the level design can be slightly frustrating at times, especially in the later levels (I'm looking at you, Metropolis Zone).

The soundtrack is great, every tune is a banger. Dreams Come True certainly knew how to use the Mega Drive/Genesis sound chip to the very best of its ability. When the level design is being as annoying as it possibly can, at least you'll have a funkin' tune to keep your spirits up (or just mock you, one or the other).

Oh, one thing I haven't mentioned at all yet is the 3D itself. It's nothing to write home about, to be perfectly honest, but it's not bad. Just more of a novelty or marketing gimmick than anything else, I usually choose to play without 3D enabled but hey, it could be your thing.

Overall, solid port, solid game, do reccommend for its very cheap price, go play it.
