Problems such as fairly samey missions: getting a base, building a base, building a mega army, to then overwhelm their base, and there are a fair few missions like that in this game. But, all in all, Ancestors adds enough of a twist to that classic formula to keep most RTS fans on their toes, while giving them a decent level of enjoyment.
When picking up Ancestors Legacy, you need to be aware that it’s not a carbon copy of Age of Empires or Warcraft III. A lot of gameplay elements were designed in a new, original way and even though at first it does cause confusion, it quickly turns out to be one of the game’s most notable strengths (which also include visuals and entrancing soundtrack). Overall, Ancestors Legacy isn’t insanely different from other popular RTS entries out there. What it does have are a lot of interesting and unique options and gameplay strengths that will make it a popular choice for those RTS players that hold strategy and planning higher than overwhelming enemies by sheer force. The graphics, gameplay, and multiplayer modes make this title a successful first expedition into the RTS genre for Destructive Creations.
It’s a badass strategy simulator, one with deep gameplay and that glorifies what is maybe one of the most gnarly periods of human history. It makes for a wonderfully executed strategy experience. But I still long for the day that we leave behind this whole “historical accuracy” fallacy and devote our fantastic game development resources to something more deeply imaginative.
A tactical real-time strategy which takes on medieval stories of strong warriors and unchallenged kings. It's not overflowing with originality, but it offers a portion of decent entertainment for several long evenings and not only for history fans and forged strategists. The game is an honest invitation to the dark times of European history, with a few freckles on beauty, but with a fast gradient and accessibility for almost everyone who does not have problems with the RTS genre.
Since you can’t have more than a dozen units at any time and defensive buildings can only be placed in pre-determined spots, your tactical options are extremely limited – and no matter what you choose, you’ll end up playing whack-a-mole with enemy troops. [Issue#231, p.72]
Its a great strategy game. It gives you sth that was not available on the market untill now. Plot, battles, graphics, historical background. Everything is on top lvl.
A decent combat system spoilt by base building. You can't call your game "Historical" and then put in it some barracks that produce units while burnning. I mean, recruits literally train on the backyard of the barracks while the battle rages on. It's like if i'd go "Wait a minute, I'll push up to build some muscle" before a bar fight. It breaks any immersion completely, especially when some character say "Burn the barracks to cut them from reinforcements".
It works in old school RTS games, but non of them supposed to be a historical realistic experience. The game looks gorgeous and I really like the animations, but that base building system is just a deal breaker for me.
Nice trailers, great announcements, and the game itself is boring and repeatable. The battles last forever. No balance between factions. Title is very poor, the game is very simple, there are much better titles.
SummaryAncestors Legacy is a squad-based real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics. Inspired by medieval European history, it brings to life four different nations and their conflicts, usually solved by war.
