The jump scares are a bit overdone, same as the original Layers of Fear, and there’s an abysmal chase sequence in the second act that could’ve been cut completely. Still, Bloober Team’s rapidly proved itself as a master of psychological horror, using symbolism in ways most games don’t even attempt, let alone achieve. So what if it’s not very scary? There’s more important work to be done. Great work.
Bloober respects the formula created in the original for this sequel, changing the scenario, but keeping its horror approach. That means a lot of linearity, repetitive resources and jump scares, but also a few lessons learned.
No game, including other horror titles, looks as good as Layers of Fear 2, yet it falls incredibly short in design. Even the story, which I personally enjoyed, is needlessly enigmatic and overly "artsy." Layers of Fear 2 isn't for everyone, but for those who want to dive into a visually stunning, off-putting environment, this will sate.
Layers of Fear 2 is better than its predecessor and mostly succeeds at its attempts to induce psychological horror. It is only marred by a few sections that, despite the fact that you’re running, tend to bring the pace to a halt, hindering the entire experience.
The game tells a great story full of interesting scenarios and looks nice. However, some irritating escape sequences, the weak horror aspect and the fact that there is absolutely no exploration needed in the levels hold it back. Adding to that, Layers of Fear 2 is quite short. There are way better horror games like it.
Layers of Fear is not bad.
The observer is excellent.
Layers of Fear 2 is ****
In my opinion, the reasons are obvious. Observer is a game. You need to do something, to participate in the process. In Layers of Fear 2 you're just a spectator. But you are not allowed to watch calmly, for some reason they added a completely useless monster, which is insanely irritating. They try to scare you, you want to see how, but it turns out that you have to run. Sorry, but you are not a frictional games, you do not know how to make such games. So do what you do well. Make scary detectives.
Probably my fault for not being able to understand the story quietly. The plot are just so confusing to me at first; And the video game is a 4-5 hour walking simulator with "scary" moments that aren't even that scary. There are also no consequences from dying and thinking this as a "horror" game is just a bit of stretch. Although I did enjoy the aesthetics and some of the paintings, so bravo. There are also other creepy moments that I liked a lot but that just can't justify of my experience. It's mostly a boring game.
SummaryLayers of Fear 2 is a first-person psychological horror game with an emphasis on exploration and story. Players control a Hollywood actor who heeds the call of an enigmatic director to take on the lead role in a film shot aboard an ocean liner. Beware, for all may not truly be what it seems.
