The performance was solid throughout my testing, I had no issues with gameplay improvements and the graphics looked great. There were some pathfinding issues and units did enjoy clashing with one another, which made battle rather hectic, but the clunky controls and movement were among the things I loved most about the original.

There’s clearly been plenty of love and attention given to the remastering of Age of Empires Definitive Edition, even if some of the less enjoyable elements of the original have also made it through the process unscathed. Twenty years later it still remains a hugely enjoyable RTS, and particularly thanks to its iconic soundtrack remains a joy to play, with hours disappearing as the eras pass you by.

Age of Empires Definitive Edition manages to fulfill its function as a remaster. The graphics and the sounds are truly a delight, and there are some small playable improvements as well, but these are weighed down by the AI and a pathfinding system which still does not behave as well as it should.

The return of one of the vicars in the RTS genre is a mix between nostalgic memories and learning how to manage your rage. The same problems that in 90s were the norm now are huge problems that can make you shout at your citizens.

After hours spent in the world of Age of Empires - Definitive Edition, we still don't have the answer to the real question: why should we play this remake? Gameplay-wise, the genre has seen a lot of improvements over the years, and the developers weren't bold enough to give a fresh start to the original title. At the end of the day, this seems more and more like a wasted opportunity.

    A questionable operation.

Hopefully one day we can get a decent sequel in the series with the tight controls, intelligent AI, and fun city-building mechanics we deserve.

It should be an 8 point, but I make it 10 to increase its average score (which is too low according to my understanding)

    Looking forwards to AOE 4.

Сейчас таких игр уже не делают, только и радуешься, что можно поиграть в старое на новом компе.

I have such mixed feelings about this. This is definitely Age of Empires I. It looks better, it sounds better, there are some minimal tweaksI have such mixed feelings about this. This is definitely Age of Empires I. It looks better, it sounds better, there are some minimal tweaks for the gameplay. And that's all?!

First off all, it is still 2D and it's not really a bad thing, the visuals improved a much, but the style is the same, true to the original. But I think 3D models would work better in some cases, rather than higher resolution, smoothly animated units. Same for buildings. I wish it was kinda like Age of Mythology. But as I said, stayed true to the roots.

The water looks really nice, destruction is beautiful, the little cloud effect on the terrain is nice but subtle. Units are detailed, but many of them are shared through fractions. Terrain graphics are... well, I miss the smoothness, it's staircase-like, similar to the old game. Also kinda wish it was a little bit more lively in term of effects, wind, more clouds, sounds effects, etc... So yeah, I'm so divided here! I like some things, but I feel it lackluster in some ways. And at the same times, I can't even say, it's a lazy remaster.

Music is really nice! I like it!

AI... ugh... I saw many, many ridiculousness there in just an hour. Gazelles got stopped by a unit and completely froze there, meaning they didn't move and their animation stopped too. Some enemy units got stuck in a short time. Path-finding is truly mixed bag.

About the technical part: I feel like the system requirements are ridiculously high for a game like this. Zooming far caused me sensible FPS drops on an i5-6402P, 8GB RAM and GTX 750... For real? Also I read many people had problems with starting the game. Fortunately it works fine for me, but it's also a bad sign. And what is 17GB here? I was kinda shocked by the size of the game. It's standard nowadays, but for a game like this, I didn't expect more than 3GB.

AOE - DE is a good game. But nothing more than the original. It's the same, but looks better. I wish it was updated in some ways other than sounds and graphics. Gameplay is the same and the 250 population limit doesn't change too much, but a welcome improvement. AI is not perfect, there are technical issues and while I like the game, it could have been way better. I like it, but at the same time, I'm disappointed. I feel like the price is barely OK, but acceptable, and also it's a really bad decision, Microsoft locked out every players who don't use Windows 10. I hope it'll be available on other platforms than Microsoft Store.

    It's a 6.5/10 for me.

This is just an HD version of old classic with very MINIMAL modifications on the gameplay front. The game mechanics are so outdated that it is a torture to play this game in this age. AoE2 HD seems generations ahead of this game even though it was released 5 years ago. Don't let the developers fool you with their false claims of improvements in unit movement. The algorithms would surely make Dijkstra roll over in his grave.

And did I say that it requires you to be online to even launch the game even if you wanted to play single player mode.

The only positive points worth a mention are the improved visuals and background music. Though they have increased the pop cap limits for matches but campaigns are still limited to 50.

I got this for less than $10 in local currency but even then it seems a waste of that money, not even worth the 17 GB it hogs on your system.

I have the game for a month and the multiplayer experience is terrible. Like 1/3 of games ends before action because people get disconnected. Servers lags and are unstable. You cannot rejoin the game after DC - you can save a game and load it later. Great, nobody does it. There are lots of errors in the multiplayer lobby browser, eg. you cannot join the lobby or you cannot see 90% of lobbys. And watch out for the Performance Test - many people cannot play ranked games because their set up is not good enough to pass the test. Expand
