The performance was solid throughout my testing, I had no issues with gameplay improvements and the graphics looked great. There were some pathfinding issues and units did enjoy clashing with one another, which made battle rather hectic, but the clunky controls and movement were among the things I loved most about the original.

There’s clearly been plenty of love and attention given to the remastering of Age of Empires Definitive Edition, even if some of the less enjoyable elements of the original have also made it through the process unscathed. Twenty years later it still remains a hugely enjoyable RTS, and particularly thanks to its iconic soundtrack remains a joy to play, with hours disappearing as the eras pass you by.

Age of Empires Definitive Edition manages to fulfill its function as a remaster. The graphics and the sounds are truly a delight, and there are some small playable improvements as well, but these are weighed down by the AI and a pathfinding system which still does not behave as well as it should.

The return of one of the vicars in the RTS genre is a mix between nostalgic memories and learning how to manage your rage. The same problems that in 90s were the norm now are huge problems that can make you shout at your citizens.

After hours spent in the world of Age of Empires - Definitive Edition, we still don't have the answer to the real question: why should we play this remake? Gameplay-wise, the genre has seen a lot of improvements over the years, and the developers weren't bold enough to give a fresh start to the original title. At the end of the day, this seems more and more like a wasted opportunity.

    A questionable operation.

Hopefully one day we can get a decent sequel in the series with the tight controls, intelligent AI, and fun city-building mechanics we deserve.

Joined on the same day, only one post, and they say almost exactly the same thing (complaining about no Steam release). This is why Metracritic user scores stink. CLEAR spamming. All the time.

BUT, this is the same game, clearly, but with better/smoother visuals. I personally enjoy it, but I could see how those that have never played it would find it a tad out dated.

After playing the Greek campaign and some random map vs AI, this is my main list of Pros and Cons:

    Pros:
1.- Nice graphical visuals and sound effects improvements.
2.- Population limit for random maps now can be more than 50.
3.- Some gameplay improvements: Farms are easier to build and you can pass through them, inactive villager button, you can build even if there is a tree or animal in the place, and you can pass through buildings if they are not built yet
    4. You have a narrator before and after every campaign scenario.
    5. You have the tech trees button for every civilization (just like AOE 2).
    6. Amazing building destruction sprites.

    Cons:
1.- Same old AI, even sometimes the pathfinding is somehow worse than the original game (Example: A group of villagers trying to collect food from forage bushes on a narrow space)

2.- Civilizations controlled by the AI is the same, plays bad even in Hard difficulty : Develops too few technologies, in water maps it sends villagers to get resources very far from the base so it losses a lot of them, it does not take care about its villagers, 5 from 10 times (approx) it build defenses in isolate places that do not defend the base or close-base resources, and does not know how to counter attack
TIP: If you like to play skirmish mode in solitary (like me), just play on maps with 0% water, for some reason the AI only in this kind of maps does not commit suicide with the villagers.

3.- No basic formations or basic commands such as guard, follow, passive, aggressive, defensive behavior.
4.- No information about how many villagers are working on different resources.
5.- Can not queue more than one kind of units in one building.
    6.- No modding capability.
    7. Small personal detail: In the original version, dead units would start to decay, before becoming skeletons, before fading out. In the Definitive edition that decomposition detail is lost.

I know that Devs say that "this is not a bug/basic limitation, it is a feature!". Old basic limitations/bugs have no reason for existing in a modern remake, so I hope that Forgotten empires are still working and creating a nice Age of Empires definitive edition such as nowadays Age of Empires 2 HD in Steam.

Could not get the game to start. Used Microsoft's online live agent to obtain a refund.

(but the thing is, I was able to play about a dozen games. Then the loading screen went crazy. The game-play was fine.)

The good thing is, Microsoft's live agent tried to troubleshoot the problem (to no avail) and then transferred me to billing.

I received a refund without any hassle. Just politely informed the live billing agent that the software did not work and I uninstalled the game, and I would like a refund for purchase number xxxxxxxx.

    Terrible remaster.
Only thing that got changed is the graphics and even there i would argue it was not much of an addition - it doesn't look much better (apart from the better resolution of course). Everything else is exactly the same - id say even worse in many cases. I honestly don't remember the movement of all the units being this bad and I think the original game was much more fluid.
On top of all that, you can only buy the game through the windows 10 store.

Even if they released it for free I wouldn't call it a success. I'm sad i paid money for this.
