  • Summary: Ancestors Legacy is a squad-based real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics. Inspired by medieval European history, it brings to life four different nations and their conflicts, usually solved by war.

Problems such as fairly samey missions: getting a base, building a base, building a mega army, to then overwhelm their base, and there are a fair few missions like that in this game. But, all in all, Ancestors adds enough of a twist to that classic formula to keep most RTS fans on their toes, while giving them a decent level of enjoyment.

When picking up Ancestors Legacy, you need to be aware that it’s not a carbon copy of Age of Empires or Warcraft III. A lot of gameplay elements were designed in a new, original way and even though at first it does cause confusion, it quickly turns out to be one of the game’s most notable strengths (which also include visuals and entrancing soundtrack). It’s a badass strategy simulator, one with deep gameplay and that glorifies what is maybe one of the most gnarly periods of human history. It makes for a wonderfully executed strategy experience. But I still long for the day that we leave behind this whole “historical accuracy” fallacy and devote our fantastic game development resources to something more deeply imaginative.

More often than not, Ancestors Legacy showed me a good time watching my berserkers, Teutonic knights, and Slavic tribesmen hack their way through forests, marshes, and the occasional open field. The weakness in the core infantry combat, which tilts a bit too much away from quick, tactical thinking and into correctly guessing how the enemy line will be arranged, was the main issue that kept me from really coming to love it.

Ancestors Legacy is a great new take on the RTS genre. While it has it's flaws, it's a breath of fresh air to a stagnant genre of games. It's laid back approach to real time strategy games allows more access to more players without causing too much effort to learn the game. Overall it's a great time.

Since you can’t have more than a dozen units at any time and defensive buildings can only be placed in pre-determined spots, your tactical options are extremely limited – and no matter what you choose, you’ll end up playing whack-a-mole with enemy troops. [Issue#231, p.72]

A good RTS ruined by poor balance and game design.

For example, even on Easy difficulty, the enemy can replace unit losses faster than you can kill them, even when you are fighting in their base and they have no apparent resource pool, and buildings 'heal' faster than you can destroy!

And like plagues so many RTS, you have to micromanage **** all over the map, sending units to defend some far off settlement that the AI has decided to target.

I think the game would have been better with a slower, more linear pace, like Total War battles on a smaller scale.

Great tech and art, poor game design.

You can't call your game "Historical" and then put in it some barracks that produce units while burnning. I mean, recruits literally train on the backyard of the barracks while the battle rages on. It's like if i'd go "Wait a minute, I'll push up to build some muscle" before a bar fight. It breaks any immersion completely, especially when some character say "Burn the barracks to cut them from reinforcements".

It works in old school RTS games, but non of them supposed to be a historical realistic experience. The game looks gorgeous and I really like the animations, but that base building system is just a deal breaker for me.
