  • Summary: Ancestors Legacy is a squad-based real time strategy with a strong focus on tactics. Inspired by medieval European history, it brings to life four different nations and their conflicts, usually solved by war.

Problems such as fairly samey missions: getting a base, building a base, building a mega army, to then overwhelm their base, and there are a fair few missions like that in this game. But, all in all, Ancestors adds enough of a twist to that classic formula to keep most RTS fans on their toes, while giving them a decent level of enjoyment.

When picking up Ancestors Legacy, you need to be aware that it’s not a carbon copy of Age of Empires or Warcraft III. A lot of gameplay elements were designed in a new, original way and even though at first it does cause confusion, it quickly turns out to be one of the game’s most notable strengths (which also include visuals and entrancing soundtrack). It’s a badass strategy simulator, one with deep gameplay and that glorifies what is maybe one of the most gnarly periods of human history. It makes for a wonderfully executed strategy experience. But I still long for the day that we leave behind this whole “historical accuracy” fallacy and devote our fantastic game development resources to something more deeply imaginative.

More often than not, Ancestors Legacy showed me a good time watching my berserkers, Teutonic knights, and Slavic tribesmen hack their way through forests, marshes, and the occasional open field. The weakness in the core infantry combat, which tilts a bit too much away from quick, tactical thinking and into correctly guessing how the enemy line will be arranged, was the main issue that kept me from really coming to love it.

Ancestors Legacy is a great new take on the RTS genre. While it has it's flaws, it's a breath of fresh air to a stagnant genre of games. It's laid back approach to real time strategy games allows more access to more players without causing too much effort to learn the game. Overall it's a great time.

Since you can’t have more than a dozen units at any time and defensive buildings can only be placed in pre-determined spots, your tactical options are extremely limited – and no matter what you choose, you’ll end up playing whack-a-mole with enemy troops. [Issue#231, p.72]

    Ancestors Legacy
    What an annoying game!

RTS games are far and few between, but that is not enough to wear rose-colored glasses about this one. Many other reviewers pointed out obvious predecessors, so I will, too. Ancestors Legacy is a mixture of Praetorians (2003) and Cossacks 2 (2005). If you played those games, you know, what to expect.
Focus is on training and developing units, using special abilities and choosing the battlegrounds well - and not on harvesting or building. Those elements are here, but reduced to a token amount. Resources are time based, and tied to locations: you have to take over villages, scattered around the maps. One village can give you multiple resources, making it easier, to control income, but also: losing a village much more costly.
Graphics and music were very impressive. The arms and armour are well researched and presented, fighting animation is convincing, fluid, almost lifelike. Dubbing, while not that great, was still effective, and I don't think I heard a better soundtrack this year - outside of Ash of Gods.
Overall the presentation is pretty top notch.
There are only a handful of units to choose from, and the unit counter is restrictive, but I liked that: I used everything I got. However: for only 4 factions, and 6-7 units per faction: I expected much bigger differences in the units. Instead, there are small, almost insignificant changes, maybe one unique unit per faction. Underwhelming, to say the least.
The area, where the game falters, is the gameplay - at least in single player. There are campaigns focusing on all factions, and they try to give some story to them. Not much, and not historically accurate, but it didn't bother me much.
The brain dead AI however, did. In skirmish, the AI uses no tactics what so ever. To counter this, the campaign missions are scripted to death. At given times a new wave of attack will trigger. To make matters worse, the AI is not affected by anything, that will hamper your own advances. Enemy units see in the dark, shooting you even when they shouldn't be able to, they will never run out of resources, and I was caught in a stalemate twice, when the AI pumped out units with the speed I was destroying them. Units also tend to be caught up in melee, if they walk too close to the enemy. Pair that up with needlessly small and restrictive maps, and you have one big pile of mess on your hands, where one unit can lock down 5-6 enemy squads, denying any tactics.
I also had trouble with unit speed: cavalry can be caught by foot soldiers, everyone runs with the land speed record, there is morale, but no stamina present, and the engine can not seem to handle confined spaces all that well, yet the missions will force you into cities all the time, where units start wandering around, break formation - or get stuck on corners.

Overall: the game looks good, sounds great, yet it is dumb and scripted.

Expand
