It reminds Mario but added an awesome taste to this 2D platformer. Easy to say, it has really great and funny mechanics and great storytelling mixed to that with abilities and co. The content is pretty much varying but gotta give the sound VFX a bunch of points, it is made in a professional way and definitely fits the vibe within the game. Expand

It is obviously inspired by great platformers of the past like Donkey Kong Country and Super Meat Boy, but it falls short of the greatness of either of those games despite lifting mechanics and presentation from them wholesale.

For instance, the fun cannon hopping mechanic and the bouncy tires from DKC are here in full effect, and the game’s UI is deeply reminiscent of SMB. Even the hellish landscapes and blood-covered obstacles made me wish I was back in 2010 playing Meat Boy for the first time.

This doesn’t mean Byte Cats isn’t fun, however. The aspects from those games come off as homage if you recognize them here, and they are fairly well implemented. The gameplay also feels good for the most part, with jumps not feeling too flighty and a predictable arc to estimate your landings.

The characters you play do lack inertia, it’s worth pointing out. The second you take your finger off the movement buttons while mid-jump, the character will stop dead. Some recent platformers have handled this differently, and it threw me off for my first 10 minutes or so with the game, but it is easy to get used to.

Overall, Byte Cats is a fun game that is worth your time and patience. There are some issues that could honestly be fixed with a few patches, but even they don’t completely ruin what is essentially a solid platformer.

TL:DR: If you like platformers and are into metal-y/rocky music, buy this game.

BYTE CATS is a 2d platformer in a pixelated artstyle. It offers a truly challenging experience – for someone like me with little platformer-experience - by gradually increasing difficulty. I just started with Chapter 2 and the difficulty really took off. BYTE CATS offers 5 chapters. It took me around 2 hours to reach Chapter 2. Provided the following chapters take just as long, we’re looking at a game which is around 10 hours long – perhaps longer, since difficulty increases.

What made BYTE CATS special to me was the outstanding music. Really, I can’t stress this enough. The music is superb! It has a metal-y rocky vibe to it. It works with repetition which made them stuck in my head and it just sounds “cool” and “speedy”. Some levels offer classics from the classic-genre which gave me the impression of depth despite the fact I haven’t seen much of the story yet.

The story evolves around 3 cats who died. However, their souls were reincarnated as far as I understood it. Before each level you can choose which cat you want to play. Why that matters? Each cat has a special ability that can help you beat the level. There even is a little progression system integrated to upgrade your cat.

Gameplay is smooth and Performance was great. I did not encounter any bugs so far either, game feels quite polished. The game would profit from some variety in sound effects. For now, every sound emitting entity has only one sound file, which can sound a bit same-y. Yet it’s fun to hear the stereotypical punch sound when you hop onto an enemy. Every time you die, you get a slap. Okay okay sorry game, I’m not that good, okay?

Unfortunately metacritic doesn't let me post the whole review. I get 404 errors constantly. :( Full review can be found on the Steam page. You're supposed to give that a game a shot anyway.
