The true masterpiece is the endless struggle to create art. Jump scares and predictable tricks in horror games won't work anymore. The story of the artist is intriguing while still making you feel tense and uneasy about what you see. Layers of Fear made story, gameplay, and atmosphere work together in harmony.

Layers of Fear is probably the scariest game of all time. A nightmarish journey through the mind of a deranged talented painter. Riveting atmosphere, fitting music and otherworldly scenes are going to haunt your thoughts for several days after the completion of your walkthrough. Magnificent.

If you're a horror fan, or even just a fan of storylines that make you think, Layers of Fear should be right up your alley. Though it can be completed in a couple of sittings or less, it's an experience not easily forgotten.

This horror experience infuses deep feelings of fear, both through great sound and images. However there should have been bigger interactions and extended puzzle solutions.

Despite the abundance of clichés, you can see that a lot of effort went into setting the right tone and atmosphere. There are some downright mind-blowing scenes and unique uses of audio and color.

On the surface, this is a simplistic horror game with a claustrophobic atmosphere and plenty of creepy moments. The straightforward puzzles and unusual visuals give it wide appeal. Beneath that there are secrets to uncover and the subliminal pleasure of playing as the monster. For those that want to probe deeper there are angles of art and psychology to ponder. Stacked up like the rickety tiers of a gothic building, Layers of Fear proves aptly named.

In other words, not so much a game as a tool to drive traffic to someone’s YouTube channel. That’s not game development. It’s pandering.

The graphics where amazing,so detailed, the pictures melting, the classic jump scares but twisted and waiting just the right moment.
when i got the finished game i went straight on playing it to the end, some parts of it where mind blowing!with effects ,immersion, darkness and the heavy environment!

Games like this, there are many but only some became masterpieces!

    i slash a 10/10

A must-buy if you love the genre and dark grotesque classical art. It's just on the border being of a walking simulator, but it's no problem since it manages to frighten you enough. Following the gameplay style of Amnesia and Penumbra series, the horror aspect mostly rely on hallucinations and ever-changing realities and distortions. The visuals are great, with greatly detailed indoors, perfect dynamic shadows and lighting. Honestly I've never seen a better colored game before, it's over-realistic. Expand

I present to you a game about... opening doors! And I kid you not.

Layers of Fear is a pretty good horror game that revolves around the story of a failed painter that seemingly descends into madness. The storyline is quite decent, though a little too cut-and-dried at times. Problem with the story is that it's stretched out to 5-6 hours of gameplay when in fact it should be 3 hours tops.

The artistic side is very good, but that is something to be expected from Polish developers. The visuals are solid if not very good and audio quality is enough to maintain the atmosphere. No complaints here.

The main problem of this game is that it's not really scary. Instead of building the tension, it relies on cheap jumpscares. You just go from door to door (you'll probably be sick of opening door for quite some time after you finish this title) and breeze through the rooms. Sometimes there'll be something to be found, sometimes there'll be a scripted event to watch, but most of the time you'll just be looking for the next door that will lead you to the next room where something might happen and make you jump.

All in all, a recommendable game with decent story, palpable atmosphere and good visuals. If you don't mind some cheap scares then it's a game you might find interesting.

It lacks engaging gameplay and only has about 1 layer of fear that wears off 20 minutes into the game.

    Pros:
This is a beautiful game that really showcases and uses Unity in really cool ways.

    Cons:
All sense of tension is broken when I realize that I can't die in a horror game (or if the chances of dying are pitifully low). Layers of Fear is more like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. It's a walking simulator.

The game is crazy repetitive. Your walking through the different variations of the same rooms over and over, from jump scare to jump scare. Even the timing of the jump scares becomes repetitive. PT could get away with it because it was a DEMO.

The story is better than FNAF but it's no Soma.
