Remnant: From the Ashes is more than just a Dark Souls clone or a simple third-person shooter. It’s the lovechild of the many games, mixed with aspects of Gears of War, Fallout, The Division, and its own brand of weird. The number of games I’ve kept playing after my time with it for a review can probably be counted on two hands, and I’m happy that Remnant is going to be joining their ranks. Despite a shallow store, some repetitive environments, and a few occasionally frustrating glitches, this is a game well worth your time.

An interesting mashup of genres, ultimately creating an experience that can stand alongside even the best Soulslikes.

Remnant: From the Ashes is, in all honesty, a breath of fresh air. A solid and alluring co-op action RPG with a good lot of innovations. Don’t call it a “souls-like with guns”, it’s much more than that.

From the Ashes is a brilliant game that takes what is good about Soulsborne and combines it with a satisfying co-op shooter.

My time with Remnant was a total roller-coaster. There were moments of pure, unfiltered rage, peaks of elation, ah-ha moments, and quiet zen grinds. For the most part though, it's just a steady climb. The developers are not shy about how hard this game is. If that's your cup of tea, perfect! Every victory will be hard-fought, bloody, and beautiful once behind you. I just couldn't shake the small, nagging sense that my few successes weren't earned. I just got lucky, squeaking through the cracks. More than this minor unease, my playtime was marked by anger, by exasperated breaths and whitened knuckles. I ended up having more fun than I expected to, but that shiny nugget of suffering remains. Heed my wary words and proceed at your peril. If a tough time is your aim, then Remnant: From the Ashes is absolutely your game.

Presentation and polish aren't its strong suit, but Remnant: From the Ashes features gripping third-person gunplay and simple but satisfying progression that enable enticing entertainment regardless of whether you're playing cooperatively or solo. The visceral variety and delightful design of the environments and enemies elevate Remnant above other Dark Souls doppelgangers.

Even when the game isn’t actively shooting itself in the foot, it never entirely succeeds.

    Gonna make this brief:

You travel between dimensions, time and space to try and find a way to undo the apocalypse that is dooming earth.

also, the Artistic Inspiration is Lovecraftian and the Gameplay Inspiration is Dark Souls.

    Do... do you need more?

It doesn't really bring anything new to the table but it's fun and gets even better if you have a friend or two. The gameplay is very soulsborne like but with guns. Melee is kind of clunky but useful in certain situations. You will be more focused on shooting and dodging in most cases but you can time stun locks and get out of deadly situations if you use it correctly.

The game isn't the most graphically intensive but the environments look decent and vary from the different worlds you'll end up visiting. Earth is probably the most dull looking but this is the apocalypse after all. The game def shows its lack of budget so a lot of the areas are copy and paste but it works and you'll be more focused on combat and finding items along the way, so unless you're the type of person that feels it necessary to screenshot everything, you shouldn't be too disappointed.

Gameplay is pretty standard. Normal third person controls minus the chest high wall GOW cover system (you can still get behind cover while crouched and aim to shoot over it). Melee exists but you will only use it in certain situations. There are various weapons from pistols to sniper rifles. Some are really fun to use and others are very meh but they all have a use depending on what you're able to find in your runs. Bosses are hit and miss. Some are well designed and others make you wonder if they were just tacked on to pad game time. One of the biggest complaints right now among the community are the adds that spawn in boss fights. That one is very subjective, however. Some people don't mind it and others hate it. My opinion is that since we have guns, if you didn't have adds attacking you then you would just hunker down in one spot and shoot the boss to oblivion.

Replay value is definitely a thing for this game. You will not find every single item in one run. You won't fight every boss in one run. There are a lot of secrets to find and solve but you can only do so if you do multiple runs or co-op a lot. It keeps everything fresh and you always have something new to find for at least 2-3 runs. There are 3 difficulties as of writing and they each bring their own challenges to your play style.

Overall, the game is fun. At its price tag, I'd call it a steal for the hours you'll have by yourself or with friends. The game has its faults and I think it's mainly due to budget. The devs worked with what they had and they have promised to support the game regardless of review scores or sales. I believe we'll have more content in the future and for now, I'm thankful we don't have a micro transaction riddled mess that only wants you to pony up for season passes, expansion passes, cosmetics and convenience crap. The game isn't for everyone but there is a huge community at the moment and you won't struggle to find people to play with.

As a fan of Souls genre, shooters and Darksiders 3- i expected more from this game. Its alright, but nowhere near the hype it gets.
    Main flaws it has are:
    - game is annoying and hard not in a good 'soulsy' way. You lack ammo, enemies can spawn indifinetly (in most bossfights- boring and lame design), quickly your weapons lose their power so you have to grind and upgrade them all the time, bosses cheat and can hit you through pillars, stairs, walls etc. Its really frustrating even for a Souls veteran. I had problems even in early levels, probably balance is off or it was clearly designed for coop (i played solo)
    - randomness which means world is built from blocks = lack of hand-made crafty levels known from souls games, no shortcuts etc. Because of that levels look samey and uninspired and dont have many orientation points that would help navigating through them. Map sucks.
    - other plenty bugs and overall low budget clunkiness.
It can be fun (especially in coop), but its not that good.

I felt like I was repeating the same in every boss fight.
I realized again how wonderful the original is.
