As far as I’m concerned, Risk of Rain 2 is as good as gaming gets. Unlocking items, discovering new synergies, planning out builds — it’s all immensely satisfying. Make no mistake: This is a tough game, and the randomized nature inherent to roguelikes just won’t click with some people. But, for players with a taste for escalating action and challenge, this game stands as one of the very best in the genre.
We have finally lived through the full release of Risk of Rain 2. With the full release comes a new character, who is excellent, and a true final level, final boss, and an ending. On top of that, we get even more excellent music from Chris Christodoulou. It cements Risk of Rain 2 as one of the best roguelikes of all time, and certainly one of the best co-op roguelikes too. There are a couple of things I was hoping to see with the full release, like more skills for the other survivors, but I’m sure they’ll arrive somewhere down the line. As it stands, if you’ve not played Risk of Rain 2, you’re doing yourself a disservice.
I didn't think I'd like this game as I couldn't get into the first one. This game is excellent and incredibly fun, especially with friends. The variety of "builds" you can choose from gives it a great deal of re-playability. Highly recommend!
Risk of Rain 2 is a must have. A love letter to the genre, a fun and engaging experience with tons of content, personality, and secrets. Version 1.0 adds a great final boss on top of the many enemies, items, challenges, maps and features included in the same patch and the previous ones.
Risk of Rain 2 has a lot to offer and despite some downsides to the multiplayer side of things, the game is still really well put together. There is a lot to explore and unlock, but most importantly, it’s really fun to play. The core gameloop of Risk of Rain 2 makes it accessible while the additional features and mechanics make it tough to put down. I highly recommend this game to both roguelike veterans and those who are interested in diving into the genre.
Varied items, engrossing gameplay and a killer soundtrack make Risk of Rain 2 one of the best roguelike shooters in recent years. The lack of a mid-game save feature and some uninspired environments hold this sequel back, but the astonishing translation from 2D to 3D more than makes up for it.
While at times empty, Hopoo Games' faith in the player's dedication is admirable, and the cooperative gameplay works well for it's template. The transition from Risk of Rain I to 3D graphics is a head scratcher at first, but it ends up working well enough to warrant a sequel
I find it hard to understand the 'Overwhelmingly Positive' review score on Steam. There are so many issues with this game.
This is a roguelike with poor balance and terrible RNG systems, which means that every so often you have a fun run and the rest of the time its a total drag to play. There's only a few levels and they get samey really fast. There's only a few bosses and they get samey really fast. Movement always starts off super slow and clunky, and this only changes if the RNG allows it to.
There are many things that could have been done to improve the experience, but the main one for me is that the game should give the player more agency over their build. The way things stand, the player is a slave to layer upon layer of RNG. There is RNG as to how many loot item boxes spawn in a level, where they are, what type they are, and of course what's inside them. There is one loot box that is a choice of three, but often one or two of the three is a question mark, aka, a random item! (why???)
Roguelikes work best in these ways: either let the player choose between two or three pickups most of the time so that they can consciously move toward a build (like Slay the Spire or Hades), and/or make sure there are enough pickups that the player can figure it out on the way (like Dead Cells, Binding of Isaac). ROR2 does neither. And on top of that, it slaps you with a countdown, making the levels harder if you take time to look for more loot.
I can only assume the people rating this highly are rating it off of their rarer god-like runs and are forgetting about the drudgery runs. A good game should be FUN first and foremost, from the get-go, not promising potential fun somewhere down the line, and only if you're lucky enough to snag it.
I have almost 100 hours of this in co-op, and yet I struggle to find any kind of fun in its extremely uninteresting gameplay loop. Character differences are miniscule and get overshadowed by a good selection of items anyway, the only exceptions being the engineer (just barely) and the melee characters (same as ranged, but more annoying to play). Each run feels like it's almost exclusively controlled by the random items you get, with everything else barely mattering at all. Even then, none of the items I've seen change the playstyle (unless you get one of the godlike lunar items that will let you beat the entire game without pressing left click whatsoever). The game turns out to be extremely easy (except that one part everyone hates) even on the hardest difficulties and even if you stroll through the levels at granny pace - the difficulty timer at the top of the screen is completely ignored by everyone after their 3rd run. Top it off with nauseating FOV and you got one of the most boring roguelites I have ever played.
SummaryThe classic multiplayer roguelike, Risk of Rain, returns with an extra dimension and more challenging action. Play solo, or team up with up to three friends to fight your way through hordes of monsters, unlock new loot, and find a way to escape the planet.
