Call of Cthulhu is the Cthulhu RPG I never realized I needed in my life. From the moment the atmosphere shifted upon entry to Darkwater, I was hooked. The Cthulhu mythology is presented with obvious appreciation for the source material, crafting a story of cosmic horror and the cults being crazy enough to worship those beings. Aside from some difficulty with sneaking, the game makes the descent into madness... fun? Can one have fun when descending into madness?
An adventure that will be enjoyed by H.P. Lovecraft's fans with a good setting but certain lack of action/puzzles making its story its strongest weapon to chain you to its desperation abyss.
For those who like lovecraftian stories, atmosphere and scenarios, Call of Cthulhu is a full meal! The only sad thing is that the game is too short, but this is a personal opinion. Very good character development, gameplay variety, soundtracks... (god tier) I think the score of this game is NOT so high because the mainstream public must have imagined something more tangible from Cthulhu (similar to Godzilla etc.).
Personally I would give it an eight, but my girl friend force me to give it a ten. This is her first real video game and it got her completely hooked. Despite the various issue of this game, we both had a very good time with it.
Pro- -engaging story with some real plot twists. -interesting minor design choice -Good RPG system
-well written dialogues -good atmosphere Con-
-combat and stealth mechanics are terrible -poor boss battles
-ending is anticlimactic
-the visual could be better
Is this the season’s must-have horror game? Nope, but there’s a lot here that fans of Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu will appreciate. Sure, there’s still a sense that the truly great Lovecraft adaptation has yet to push back the door of dread R’lyeh and rise to the surface, but until it does – or a sequel brings improvements – this will more than do.
Like the creature itself, Call of Cthulhu is a convoluted mix of ideas; some god, some bad. Being based in Lovecraft's short story guarantees a great atmosphere that fans of his works will surely loved, but here, the cosmic horrors are more myth than reality.
A good example of a psychological thriller, and perhaps with a sequel Cyanide Studios could smooth out those rough edges and give us the Cthulhu game we deserve.
If this game had better graphics, say as in a Tomb Rider or an Uncharted game, it would be rated a 10 by most players (I am leaving pseudo journos and access media out of the equation because we all know how they rate games) .
So, yes graphics are dated, I played in December 2020. With that out of the way, I can say that the game is superb. It has investigation, exploration, action, a very telling story, multiple endings and a few puzzles.
Great game. Thank you to all that participated in making the game. It was very enjoyable.
I love the Cthulhu mythos but this gameplay is so boring and the plot is so bland. The game is not even scary with only a few levels actually bringing me to the edge of my seat. But other than that there was nothing that made me want to go back. All in all the game is boring and the story is bad with almost nothing scary despite being a horror game. Very disappointed.
I love Lovecraft and the Call of Cthulhu, I read it and loved it.
This game is not what it should be. Trying to merge detective game with horror, did not work well. I played it, but I didn`t really enjoy it.
