Overall it is hard not to be impressed with what Turtle Rock have achieved here, as Evolve is truly unlike anything available at the moment. Its no-nonsense approach is a breath of fresh air, and while the steep learning curve may force some gamers out of the loop early, those who remain will help form the core experience of the game in the months to come - a version of natural selection if you will.

With its balanced class-based, teamwork orientated gameplay, great graphics and slick mechanics that keep you playing into the wee hours of the night, Evolve itches that competitive urge and feels a lot more evolved that your standard, run-of-the-mill shooter.
  3. Evolve has nice graphics and atmosphere, but you may be bored because of long matchmaking times and some bugs. Nevertheless, it is quite fun to play with friends.

Evolve is, in the ideal environment, enjoyable, a game that offers a really interesting experience. However, that environment is hard to attain and weighs down a risky idea, where we miss more content in the form of game modes and where solo mode is, in short, unnecessary.
  5. 75
Evolve has a hint of greatness, but a lack of content at launch and a jarring amount of premium launch and planned DLC hold it back. What we have here is an evolution of the Left 4 Dead formula, not a revolution.

Evolve has rare highs hidden amongst tedious lows. When the title hits its stride, it is easy to see why it was designed in this way

No actual campaign and focus on four players and one monster feels fresh only for a while. Currently, the constant repetition simply becomes boring, and interesting content fills only a couple of evenings.

Rabid anti-DLC keyboard warriors have unnecessarily targetted Evolve. As far as the game goes, it looks amazing, plays great, and the characters are diverse. It never gets old because of all of the ways you can toy with opponents and strategize evading or hunting them. As far as the dlc drama goes, the expansion monsters and hunters are not necessary at all since TRS makes sure everything is balanced to a 50% win rate. The prices are the same you'd pay for a map pack in other games only this time, a monster or a hunter changes the gameplay way more than a lousy map pack would and are worth it, but again not necessary. Also, all new maps and modes will be free as the dev has taking great care to ensuring the commmunity stays unfragmented.

Going back to the game, once you cut through the lies fed by this angry internet mob, TRS is incredibly open about this amazing game that I have no doubt will keep me entertain for a long long time. I personally love playing the monster but all of the classes are so fun that I don't mind any role. It's for both the solo and team player in all of us. If you get tired of online, the solo play is AMAZING with very good bots.

My copy is not only playable, but very fun. I disagree with most of the negative reviews I have read. I think the graphics are up to par, its an original approach to multiplayer gaming, and I also believe the amount of content available from day one is adequate. If you dont want to pay extra money for DLC then dont. You can still play with people who do. I also disagree with the negative reviews arguing that gameplay is unbalanced. I have played with eight human characters and two monsters so far and have won and lost different ways and at different times. However, I do agree with the negative reviews that there is no story line and no campaign. Although I mostly buy video games for their compcompetitive multiplayer, I do enjoy playing campaign as well. I have shown some friends this game and they're all on my side, and the three of them ended up buying the game later in the day. I think if you want an intelligent and methodical multiplayer game, this is a good pick up. I am most likely going to buy some DLC too. $100 For me and 3-4 friends to have probably 100 hours of fun over the next year is totally worth it in my book. Expand

One that simply cannot be labeled purely as a shooter. That is only one element of the game, the other being the hunt. I quite enjoy fighting as both human/ monster as they are both equally fun. I think the part where it may be off putting, is when the monster is able to escape and you have to spend time trying to find him again. Some may argue that this is tedious and repetitious. But, once again , this is part of the game. The hunt. It does not bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I rather enjoy it. And i have also been in the role of the monster and the feeling of being hunted is a little thrilling to be honest. There were moments where I thought I was safe enough to feast or evolve only to realize that the hunting team were right on me .. and there have also been times where I have completely fooled them. Regardless, the battles are epic fun and brutal. The only real quip I have with this game is the DLC scheme is really bad. Really bad. And more importantly, there is a real lack of game modes . In short, this is a great, fun game IF you know what you are getting. If you are expecting a COD or Destiny even, type game... No. This is a unique game that offers up a lot of great ideas and for the most parts , succeeds. I feel that a sequel could definitely put some polish on a franchise I hope to see more of. Expand

That's about it, not much more I can say past that is positive. Much like Titanfall the game needs a campaign focus. It has zero back story and I'm starting to question why the humans are even attempting to stay on the planet. Like Titanfall its really good at that single mulitplayer experience, once that thrill sub-sides there is nothing to keep you locked into it. That's not even mentioning the DLC **** it offers. This is what happens when marketing trumps game developers plans for something. Expand

Then you play another match of the same thing and you get bored, really bored. Considering the outrage from 'destiny's' lack of story and repetitive nature, i fully expect this game to get destroyed by the user reviews because it has those same flaws on an almost unbelievably more massive scale . After playing this game a few hours, i seriously thought i was missing the 'real' game mode or something and kept searching through the main menu to no avail. Then came to the conclusion this is a 20 dollar arcade title at BEST. Seriously, it should have been an online free-to-play title with micro-transactions for dlc. Considering it already has micro-transactions for dlc it left me wondering WHAT THE HELL I PAID 60 DOLLARS FOR ? Expand

I don't feel this was worth 60$, felt like a freemium game with the ENTRY PRICE of a full AAA title.

    -Little variation with game-play
-Laughable "campaign" basically a 5 match set with bare bones story or even exposition little cut scenes and the same cut scene at the end whether you win or lose.
    - Tedious and repetive

    UPDATE: This game is dead.

Read the forums on 2k's website. Go, google 2k Evolve forums, and you'll see that someone posts... maybe once a month. Go to Steam, look at the stats, 161 people playing during PEAK times on Steam. Less than 200 people playing worldwide... at peak times.

Let's move onto WHY it is dead:
Director says its going to be free to play, franchise gets transferred to 2k. They claim there will be no DLC at release. Okay... $200 DLC at release

Bad broken poorly executed gameplay. Bugs, bugs, bugs. Invincible shields, spawning as a random critter incapable of attacking. I've fallen through the ground countless times.

Each update makes the game worse, as if they had a complete game that they took parts out, polished the rest, and with every piece they put back, new issues arise. I especially dislike how the framerate can sometimes drop to 1 for no reason... on a console. The acknowledged bug list went two months after release without being updated. This is the most critical time to let the community know you're working hard on bug squashing, instead the bug list went completely ignored... for two months. Please tell me how they're supposed to fix bugs if they're not even acknowledging them. It gets worse...

And you're like, well the game is only a year old, surely they're going to keep working on it... No. Just no, because Turtle Rock has already begun hiring for a new unannounced IP that will NOT have anything to do with Evolve. A year later and the developers have already abandoned this game.

I spent $85 on this game at release, $60 for the game and $25 for the season pass, not including tax. Three months later I traded it into Gamestop for $8. The cashier said, "I'm surprised you lasted this long".
I bought a box of cat litter and I watched my cat **** into it. This is Evolve.
