The Messenger is without a doubt one of the best indies available on the Switch right now. It has a lot of competition with the sudden sea of metroidvania games available, but its stunning look, fantastic soundtrack, and clever writing coupled with the amazing gameplay put it a step above the rest. When I walk away from a game every night only wanting to play more, there's little to complain about.
The Messenger pays tribute to gaming classics in a fun, involving and memorable way that will get players to quickly enjoy the experience and get the most of its hilarious plot and marvelous audiovisual environment. This is all reinforced by its in-game transition from an 8 to a 16-bit environment, which might seem a bit confusing at first but will easily be seen as an integral part of the game.
This game is a real hidden gem. First i was not interested in it's style and gameplay but as soon as i started playing i got **** in and couldn't put it down until the credits rolled. It's a masterpiece when it comes to visual style, soundtrack and addictive, hard but very rewarding gameplay. On top of that the writing is just great and full of awesome humor. For me its a must play even if you are not a fan ****.
The Messenger is a very good game that has lots of twists, whether it's in its narration or in it's gameplay. This game seems more aimed at the nostalgic gamer rather than the younger audience with lots of references to games from the 8 and 16 bit era.
The Messenger combines modern gameplay with a mix of graphic styles. The fun, humor and challenging gameplay is amazing, but it wears off a bit when the more open structure is introduced in the second half of the game.
The Messenger takes the best parts of the action-platformers it takes influence from and reinterprets them well. With clever writing, well-designed levels, and balanced difficulty curve, the game continuously hooks you with enticing skill-based challenges and satisfying payoffs. Your character might have an immediate imperative to delivering a world-saving scroll, but the journey there definitely one to savor.
The tedium of the second half of the game, and the increasing frustration brought on by its level design, checkpoint system and challenging platforming somewhat sour the experience though.
I really can't understand this point of the gaming culture where unoriginality, copycats, faux-sequels, and simply poor design gets praised so much. Enough with the nostalgia hype bubble. This game, again, is generic as 100 other games on steam, do programmers make this the sane game-maker tool or something? pfff
Good lord, this has got to be one of the clunkiest games that has ever graced my PS5. **** demands absolute precision from me by filling the screen with dozens of enemies, projectiles, and environmental hazards, then I also demand absolute precision from that game's controls and that is just not the case here. The controls are just dumb. The gliding should've been put on literally ANY OTHER BUTTON other than the jump button, then going into a glide instead of a cloudwalk could've been avoided entirely. Similar thing with the wall clawing: Put it on a button instead of the character automatically holding onto every wall! Also, old folks might enjoy all the NES-era BS like getting knocked back when you get hit, or medusa heads with an frustratingly annoying pattern, or EVERY ENEMY RESPAWNING INSTANTLY WHEN THEY GET BACK INTO FRAME (??!!), but I very much don't. There's a reason why that stuff had been thoroughly discarded and left in the past, and that's because it was total nonsense and just annoying AF to deal with. None of that s**t belongs in a video game released in 2018. Nuff said.
SummaryAs a demon army besieges his village, a young ninja ventures through a cursed world, to deliver a scroll paramount to his clan’s survival. What begins as a classic action platformer soon unravels into an expansive time-traveling adventure full of thrills, surprises, and humor.
