The developers at Abbey Games (ah, no wonder the abbess was such a tough cookie!) have created a thoroughly charming encounter system that sets it apart from the usual tactical combat.
While in truth, it’s possible that some might tire of its regimented systems and board game esque beats, the fact remains that Renowned Explorers still stands as one of the best surprises of the year so far that wannabe adventurers of any age can enjoy.
i can't for the life of me understand how it has such a low user score. Review bombing? This game is incredible. A hidden gem. i implore gamers to try this one out. It's worth every copper.
Renowned Explorers International Society is a strategy game of big proportions. The expeditions are always full of surprises, and you are never certain that you will come out unscathed. The game truly delivers a thrilling and enjoyable experience.
It may look like a casual game but the mechanics including tactical party management as well as unlockable and combinable abilities keep you motivated. At least until routine sets in. Solid entertainment for aficionados of turn-based board games.
Without a doubt this is my game of the year for 2015, and probably in my all-time top 10 or 20 list. my (as of rn) 231.3 hours on my Steam record do not include the 30 or so hours i spent previewing it. i meant to only spend like 20 minutes previewing it, but it is that good. it is also true that i literally stole money to buy this game. i put it back before anyone was the wiser, but still, this game is so awesome that it temporarily turned me evil.
this game has really good potential and is very enjoyable.
however, it falls in the most important part a rouge like can fall. replay value. u gain very little by doing more playthroughs and there aren't enough events.
after finishing ftl once i wanted to finish it many more times (on hard).
after finishing this once (took me 4 tries), though enjoyable, i didn't want to play again.
wait for some dlc or expansion.
good game. not worth the money.
I've been on a "turn-based" game kick lately so when this presented itself I had to give it a go. Overall, the game is really good, despite the heavy use of RNG to determine outcomes while exploring-- at first this was very annoying to me (especially when you have a run of poor rolls) but I think it's just that those bad luck moments stick with you longer.
I'd have preferred to give the game a 7.5 instead of a 7, but that isn't an option. If the game introduces a difficulty slider and improves the new player experience with a better tutorial, my score would be closer to 9.
It's hard to say exactly how good **** this is; I was drawn in by the impressive, unique art-style and the diverse, motley crew of adventurers at your disposal. The game's combat system is surprisingly in-depth and well thought-out, but the very heavy RNG mechanics on the overworld may turn off some players. I am a bit disappointed by the amount of content in the game, though I suppose that statement probably speaks volumes on its own. The developers certainly created a solid game, I just wish there was more of it. (even including the paid DLC)
Overall, Renowned Explorers is a decent title to pick up for those gamers that enjoy board games with a bit of turn-based combat mixed in. If you're hesitant, I highly suggest waiting for a 50% off sale before making a purchase as the game is a bit light on things to do. It is however, a decent game to kill time on a plane or long bus ride.
The game is too linear based and missions the same. It's not even like Heart of Africa where you did some actual exploring. Play a game or too and the redundancy will set in and you'll find you're just repeating yourself over and over.
Not to mention the fact the devs are deleting posts on the official forums on Steam trying to hide how bad the game is or overpriced it is.
I'd recommend a long wait on this one as it's not as good as it might look. The other one that is out recently is a tad better but if you want a real experience exploring then find an emulator and get "Heart of Africa" by EA.
