Though brilliant in its design, La-Mulana is definitely one of those games that will only appeal to a dedicated few. This is not a game you can casually play every once in a while, and expect to get a great experience; it demands a little more of its players than that through its peerless puzzle design. If you do give it the time of day, however, La-Mulana proves itself to be one of the most intricately-crafted Metroidvanias in recent memory. We’d give La-Mulana a strong recommendation, then, but with the caveat that you come into this one expecting to be frustrated and stuck often. Don’t be scared off by the daunting difficulty, this is one for the ages.

No, I didn’t chuck my controller as I’ve grown up. However, I still say the game cheats. That aside, LA-MULANA has a ton of playability as you try to find hidden shops and solve the puzzles. It is not the best game on the Switch, but it is a lot of fun. It would be a shame to pass up this little hidden gem.

La-Mulana is an exceptional metroidvania, but only to those who are capable of braving its meticulous ruins. Understanding the symbols and meaning behind so much of its cryptic messages is only half of the battle. Being able to meet it physically is another story, since the enemies are as insane as the ones in old-school Castlevania, and the traps are more methodically implemented. The adventure is epic with quite a few miles to it.

La-Mulana knows how to be tough and demanding but dedicated players will find a game that has an interesting plot, a marvelous visual environment that's inspired on the 16-bit era, an exquisite soundtrack and very engaging puzzles. Not all players will be lured, due to some puzzles leading to frustrating moments but fans of Metroidvania-type games have a real gem here for the Nintendo Switch catalogue.

I really want to give this 2 scores:

    - For dedicated explorers who want to put 50+ hours into a tedious puzzle, platforming game: 10/10
    - For typical Metroidvania fans: 2/10

This game is beyond frustrating. It's already very difficult for a Metroidvania, on par with ESA in terms difficulty. The controls and jumping are very clunky and feel like something from an early 1990s platforming game. Movement is not fluid at all like in modern Metroidvanias.

The puzzles are extremely abstruce. I suppose the extremely tedious and masochistic nature of the game makes it rewarding for some players. You often have to go back and forth across the map ... guess and check, guess and check, and then guess and check again trying to figure out many puzzles. If you like spending hours farming in games doing repetitive tasks, you may enjoy this.

Boss battles are super frustrating too, not only because they're difficult, but because they're far from the nearest save point. This game makes Dark Souls look fair. Imagine all the hours wasted trying to beat bosses because you keep dying trying to get to them.

There are some who have put in 200+ hours to beat this frustrating game. Good luck.
