    In 1998 a special forces team is sent to investigate some bizarre murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Upon arriving they are attacked by a pack of blood-thirsty dogs and are forced to take cover in a nearby mansion. But the scent of death hangs heavy in the air. Supplies are scarce as they struggle to stay alive.

    Graphics:

    * More detailed graphics that retain the horror.
    * The environments come alive with detail thanks to resolution upgrades and non-static 3D models.
    * Post-processing effects like Bloom filters, which were not easy to do at the time of the original release, have been added to make the HD graphics even more realistic.
    * High-Resolution Environments - We've increased the resolution of the background environments by recreating them with a mix of high-res static images, plus animated 3D models.
    * Widescreen (16:9) is supported, so players can experience a greater sense of immersion.
    In widescreen mode, the screen will scroll. The parts of the screen that get cut off on the top and bottom will scroll into view automatically depending on the character's position.
    * You can switch the display mode during gameplay in real time.

    Sound:
    * High-Quality Sound - The audio has been remastered to increase the sampling rate, and of course 5.1ch output is also now supported.
    * You can play using the original control scheme or an alternate control scheme that lets you just push the analog stick to move in the direction you want to go.

    Resident Evil’s flaws are every bit as glaring today as they were back in 2002. The controls, the awkward camera and the game’s item management are all sources of irritation. And yet, despite these issues, Resident Evil HD is still an undeniable classic. No other survival horror game has managed to channel the same compelling level of tension. If you’ve ever played Resident Evil in any of its incarnations in the 23 years since its original release, you’ll know exactly what to expect: one of the most genuinely unnerving games the industry has ever produced. Having the game in portable form is just extra icing on the cake.

    This is just a great version of one of the best remakes in the history of video games. It holds up incredibly well, and it’s one of those games everyone should play at least once.

    The return of Resident Evil to Nintendo platforms should come with inherent celebration. Gaming’s first realization into true survival horror is timeless thanks to the technical enhancements of this HD remaster. The game remains as tense and foreboding as it did when it first released. This experience still stands unparalleled to many titles currently releasing on the Nintendo Switch. It’s impressive how flawlessly Capcom managed to get it running. However, it’s also unreasonably more expensive on the Nintendo Switch when compared to the same game on other consoles. Despite this, it’s still a near-perfect horror game which is required reading for those who have yet to play it.

    After the amazing 2002 remake, Capcom, this time, delivers a very conventional HD version. But if there’s still somewhere, some players who haven’t played it yet, this could be the right time to give it a try.

    A fantastic game after years, Switch can finally be proud of a good port, capable of recreating all the atmosphere and magic of the father of the survival horror genre.

    There’s no denying this is a great remake of the PlayStation classic, however, it’s also one where you can feel its limitations and archaic systems creaking along. Going back to the original ways of Resident Evil is a little awkward, sure, but it’s still an enjoyable survival horror experience and one dripping in atmosphere.

Only gripes I have are the controls (though control issues are practically unavoidable in a game with a fixed camera like this) and the fact the difficulties have such ludicrous names that I ended up playing the entire game on Easy without knowing. Other than that Resident Evil 1 Remake is basically the pinnacle of survival horror. Can't wait to play it again as Chris.… Expand

    The game is looking cleaner than ever and such a great title on the go when you've got a spare 40 minutes on a train (though that amout only just feels justifed enough to use an ink ribbon lol)

    My only gripe is that this should of had a pysical release as an option as I would of felt more comfy paying £29.99 for a cartridge than a digital version.

    This game is for the horror fans and the controls though dated actually add to the experience to make it scarier. A must have on any system. Well done Capcom as usual.    … Expand

I tried it again a few years ago, on the Gamecube, and still couldn't get into it. I didn't mind the tank controls or the obscure puzzles (I'm a Silent Hill fanboy, after all). But on the Gamecube version, there's this stutter that happens every time the game changes its fixed camera angles - which is A LOT. I remember it taking me out of the immersion of the experience all too often. The limited inventory space was (and still is) also a hurdle for me - because constantly running to the few item boxes in the game sucks.

    But then RE7 and REmake of RE2 came and I developed a weird love for the item management system. Coming back to the Resident Evil REmake on Switch, now lacking those stutters, was a very enjoyable experience. Like a masochist, I came to love even the fact that death means going back to your last save - which could be hours ago, if you're ballsy.

    It's not really a scary game, but maybe I'm too desensitized by its contemporaries. The atmosphere is still eerily effective, and being mentally aware of which room has what - and deciding the best path to take - is invigorating. I like the silence, too. Modern survival horror games have the characters blabbering all the time. Resident Evil 2 REmake's Leon and Claire won't shut the hell up whenever they see a zombie or Mr. X or something. There's something atmospherically immersive about reading your characters' thoughts rather than hearing them spoken aloud - and this Resident Evil does that wonderfully.    … Expand

It's no longer scary, the dialogue is terrible, the controls are terrible, and the item management is horrendous. On top of that, bringing it to a portable console is just madness. With any portable console game developers need to take battery life into account, and they haven't. Ink ribbons are hard to come by, so using one to save 30 minutes progress while on a train or having a longer play session, seeing your red battery light come on and having no ink ribbons or a typewriter to save is simply unforgivable. This will always be a "classic" and will be alot of people's first ever memory of the survival horror genre, but you want to battle against the games puzzles and enemies, not the controls or inventory management. You can't even drop items.

    For dienhard fans of the original only. And even then, you might wonder why you even enjoyed it.    … Expand
