We can say without a doubt that we have the best and most complete FIFA of this generation.

FIFA 20, as usual, takes another step forward to polish the series even further. The main addition this year is Volta, that brings street football back. It’s not a revolution, but it is a great football game.

I think it’s critical that publishers and studios offer more than just tweaks to gameplay and new lines of dialogue. EA Vancouver and Romania have done quite a bit in that effort this season. VOLTA is an adept component with surprising depth. Yes, it is ostensibly inspired by 2012 Street and borrows heavily from its bag of toe flicking tricks. But the iteration isn’t chintzy. It’s implementation isn’t some hasty, tacked-on remastering. The mode is fleshed out, thought out, and plays out effectively. It also seems to set an influential tone of fun across the 20 landscape. This is the most enjoyment I’ve had kicking it around on the FIFA pitch since 2015 and should be this addition’s memorable stroke.

FIFA 20 feels like it might be a more divisive entry than usual. In altering the physics and game flow so dramatically, the team risks alienating just as many players as it hopes to bring in. That said, everything that makes FIFA what it is remains intact, with the usual attempts at streamlining and bug-wrangling. VOLTA is the big draw, with its community-driven structures and inclusive character creation. While plenty of fans will no doubt immediately jump to their favorite corners of FIFA, this year’s attempt at trying something new feels almost like its own game. EA Sports has been trying more and more lately to put a little something for everyone in each title, and FIFA 20 does exactly that.

Delivering another strong outing, FIFA 20 proves once more that it's a football game truly to be reckoned with. There are issues, but few are serious enough to really mar the overall experience. Ultimately, FIFA 20 is fantastic, its new VOLTA Football mode being a particular joy, while FUT proves endlessly compelling yet again.

Volta brings new life into the series, but on the whole FIFA 20 is an adequate but underwhelming entry into the series.

FIFA has never been better, at least on the pitch. Volta is fun in small doses, but those looking to play something other than Ultimate Team will be inevitably disappointed in the lack of variation in offline modes. Those who are in it for the thrill of opening a pack and getting a star player, or who simply love collecting cards and playing football matches with their new additions will find a lot to love, at least until next season when it all begins again.

Other than that this game is a complete disappointment, The career mode is completely broken. It is ridden with bugs that make you think the developers must not have tested the game. They promised to add so many features to improve the game mode, but all they've done is made it worse. Press Conferences are bland and repetitive. Dynamic Potential doesn't work half of the time. After the diabolically awful Fifa 19, which was quite possibly the worst Fifa game of all time, EA needed drastic improvement to save face. Fifa 20 is nowhere near a good enough improvement on Fifa 19.

EA have become the masters of ruining games and Fifa is no exception.

FIFA 20 promised so much for career mode but it’s so broken it’s not playable. There are millions of people that only want to play offline and EA **** on them every year. Career Mode enhancements were one of the “big sells” this year, but what they have actually done is create an unplayable mess. Irritating issues encountered:
    - Teams picking weakened sides
    - Unrealistic leagues (Man City getting relegated..)
    - Broken press conference questions, including: spelling errors (where is the quality control?), nonsensical questions (“were you worried when you didn’t score in the first half?”...when you scored twice in the first half), the same few questions on repeat.
    - Morale system with no risk / reward - why would you give a negative response? - Manager objectives: I started a CM with Oldham in League 2. I got sacked after 38 games with the team in 6th because I did not meet some of the objectives. One was to finish with a £9m profit for the year. If i sold every single player, I would not make £9m. The objectives can be impossible, and now that you actually face repercussions for failing them, it’s a glaring problem. (This is a game breaker).
    - Headers are utterly pointless. I’ve played over 75 games and not scored a single corner. I have tried EVERY possible way to approach these. Do search this online, other people agree that the direction and height is completely random, with next to no success.
    - With default settings on the second hardest difficulty, I played 8 matches in a row where the score was 2-1 to either team. Across 25 matches there was never a score other than 2-1, 1-1 or 1-0. Is that really realistic? - Your players make ZERO forward runs. Everyone is incredibly static. If you want to show some urgency so change team instructions, everyone is out of stamina by 60 minutes! - There are never fouls by the AI. New Free Kick mechanics are in there somewhere, but I’ve had about 1 Free Kick every 30 matches so I have no idea if they’re an improvement. - Blocked shots - the AI has an incredible block shot ratio. - Rebound goals - so many goals conceded from knocking it into an empty net after an initial save. - Winning a tackle but not the ball...unbelievable how often you can win your challenge but the ball still fall to the AI players. Do yourself a favour and don’t bother buying it. EA have had almost a month since early access to try and patch these issues but instead they have done nothing. They are showing utter contempt for loyal customers and I hope it hits them in the pocket.
