Jul 19, 2021Ultimately the story doesn’t make the most sense, especially with the substantial shift I had at the end, but that didn’t affect my enjoyment of the game overall. It was beautiful and complex. Silly characters and a surprisingly deep and thought-provoking story kept me wanting to see how it would play out. With this being Paralune’s first game, I was completely blown out of the water with their work. They found a way to balance a mechanically simple game and an emotional story very well. I look forward to my next adventure with them.

Jul 20, 2021At the heart of Mythic Ocean is the notion that complex societies are resistant to one-size-fits-all, top-down solutions, no matter how benevolent a ruler’s intentions are. Such an obvious lesson is not exactly a revelation, but I enjoyed the manner in which the developers illustrate the point — with levity and a plot twist that reminded me of the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges.

Jul 5, 2021There is nothing daring or complicated about Mythic Ocean. It’s not substantial, being one-and-done in a couple of hours, without a convincing reason to play again. But it has something to say about the difficulties of friendship, and it achieves a meditative state that allows you to unwind as you navigate beautiful environments.

Jul 19, 2021Mythic Ocean surprised me as I enjoy a good dose of philosophy if done the right way. The game is very relaxing and not overly challenging when it comes to helping the gods or searching for the lost pages. The real challenge comes when you have to make a decision on which god should create the new world. It really does make you think, and that choice is not simple to make. I believe it was designed that way to show the power of influence you have in both this fictional world and the real world.

Jul 12, 2021Mythic Ocean has an interesting premise but its flaws do not allow this premise to reach its full potential. The gameplay is limited. You explore in search of pages and golden weights in a world that is visually pleasing but not that interesting to traverse. And then you talk to the different gods looking for the creator of the new world. Although these conversions have interesting results, the background of these conversions is not motivating enough.
