Athlete A gives us the story behind the story. It’s a terrific journalism movie, but it’s also a story of young women who persevered and found justice against the odds.
A measured if still-maddening look into the 2016 USA Gymnastics scandal.

I loved it. Very disturbing to watch, of course, but so well done. I hope these young women have found strength and healing.

A very hard documentary to watch considering the theme, but although there are many moving parts, since it's about a group of stories coming together due to one common point, it still does a great job explaining everything from the history that led to the main storyline to the perspective from not just the survivors but those involved in bringing things to light and getting justice. It's very moving and the personal testimonies make it even more so, with one of the hardest parts being the end for the story isn't technically over since it deals with a real life matter though lacking closure but even that is positive because it reawakens the desire for justice for those who are still struggling. For the work and the job bringing such an important matter to light once more I give it a 10 out of 10.

Like a lot of recent documentaries about the overdue reckoning for sexual predators in positions of power, Athlete A is a reminder that the rot is sometimes within the system itself, not just within the criminals it benefits.
Packaged as a standalone film, this fascinating and sensitively handled accounting shines a light on the abuse scandal that was exposed by the Indianapolis Star's investigative reporting into USA Gymnastics (USAG).
What’s striking about the film’s tone is its redemptive warmth. Though the details are chilling, it’s as if a cathartic space has been opened for these girls and their families to explain what they went through.
The documentary, directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk, is vigilant in widening is lens to capture the broader problems at USA Gymnastics.
Athlete A is a beautifully crafted documentary, whose only downfall seems to be a slightly drawn out first hour. The story is touching and at times difficult to watch, but necessary as well. Highly recommend.
