For fans of Neeson as action hero, “Blacklight” may be something of a disappointment, at least measuring it against the yardstick of previous thrillers in this particular branch of the actor’s body of work.
Blacklight is an unsurprisingly tepid action thriller which extends this odd phase of Neeson’s career, but the best thing that can probably be said about it is that it’s not materially worse than most of the others.
(Mauro Lanari)
The invincibility of the action heroes, which rivals the superomism of the Marvel characters, however, has the luck that its actors as they age are forced to re-propose themselves in excellent twilight action movies. "Blacklight" is one example of this ruined by an incomprehensibly clumsy script.
This movie is set up like an action film or thriller, but while the story is kinda there, it feels more like talking and randomness in the movie, so it gets quite boring at times or at times too careless about the plot and doesnt make sense in those times.
Lacking a high concept or memorable central character, the film is a by-the-numbers actioner that coasts on its star’s soulful gravitas and low-key charisma.
Blacklight’s filmmakers seem to have spent a lot time trying to figure out why Neeson would have to bonk some heads, and not nearly enough time storyboarding and staging elaborate, gloriously executed head bonks.
Neeson maintains a certain doleful dignity as an action star who apparently takes no pleasure in his gift for violence, but Blacklight has little else going for it.
Instead of elaborating its plot, Blacklight offers up repetitious, dialogue-driven scenes that deliver only the shallowest of exposition, advancing the story at a sluggish pace.
Blacklight isn’t much of a title. At the very least, though, it provides a useful hint that the movie isn’t much either. One could even argue that it’s not a movie at all, only a rusted-out recycling bin of ill-fitting themes, notions, poses, conventions, affectations, tropes, tropelets and inert snippets of dialogue from other movies.
Just when you may have thought LIAM NEESON was out of roles to play he completely SHOCKS you and plays an FBI FIXER who gets pulled into a GOVERNMENTAL CONSPIRACY in this INVENTIVE and tight ACTION THRILLER.
Poor Liam Neeson continues to have to swallow the credible front man role in woke movies after the straight (politically incorrect) comments he made a few years ago.
