At the heart of Iris is love, between Iris and the camera, Maysles and his subject, and Iris and Carl. They nailed it, this crazy life, and they're still getting a kick out of it.
Maysles endearingly reveals Apfel’s blend of blind passion and keen practicality, her unflagging enthusiasm for transmitting her knowledge to young people, and her synoptic view of fashion as living history.

Iris Apfel is inspiring. What a wonderful hip, humorous, senior citizen. I enjoyed the documentary from beginning to end. I hope to be only half as cool as Iris in late life, And all the accomplishments in her career as a designer is amazing.

"Iris"is a documentary chronicling the life of Iris Apfel, one of the most flamboyant and creative figures in the New York fashion scene. The film is more than just the history of this 93 year old icon, it is the story of the relationship with Ms. Apfel and Albert Maysles, her Director/Photographer, and with her and her 100 year old husband Carl. Iris, as a film and as a person, is an inspiration to all for this dynamic lady's originality and spontaneity knows no bounds. Although she affectionately refers to herself as an old starlet, she is really a star without equal. I thought the film would be a "ladies"flick" since it dealt with costumes, fabrics, accessories and the like but it is much much more. It is a life lesson on how to maximize one’s assets and innate talents and take them to whatever height you desire. More than anything, Ms. Apfel’s ad lib comments and philosophical utterances are priceless and give food to those needing the strength to follow the untraveled road and to seek to attain the difficult goals. I give the film a 9 and urge that it be viewed by all who wish to see that age is only a number and, in Ms. Apfel's case, not even close to a liability.

For those looking for regrets or profundity, Iris doesn’t dig particularly deep in that regard. But if you want merely to revel in the life of a singular figure who approaches her look and her life very much on her own terms, you’ll be charmed and delighted — and maybe even inspired to try something risky next time you get dressed up.
Apfel is constantly chatting to “Albert” off camera, not to us, and the affection adds an unusual meta level to Iris, a conversation between two old-timers who have gone from making history to becoming it.
Maysles gets to the heart of what is important to Apfel: truth, in a world in which it’s in increasingly short supply.
Maysles could have made this another “Grey Gardens,” seeing Apfel as just a well-heeled hoarder. But Apfel never comes off as eccentric, just singular.
It’s a happily modest movie that, while frequently edging toward boredom, is never actively off-putting.
Iris Apfel has been having a media moment for the last few years. She's a 93-year-old fashion icon with a unique, extreme style. This film shows her at several public appearances, interacting with her husband and shopping for more clothes and accessories. Adding to the aging-defying stereotype is the director, legendary documentarian Albert Maysles, who's 87 himself. There's a hint of biographical background and a few other people peripherally involved, but the camera focuses primarily on Iris. She's a wonderfully fascinating personality with an inspiring message of individuality and confidence.

A fun, colorful portrait **** fashion and interior design maven Iris Apfel. While the material is generally entertaining, the production seems a bit thin in spots, with some sequences stretched out a bit more than they probably needed to be to fill up what is still a fairly short runtime. With that said, however, viewers will likely enjoy this portrayal of a truly American original.

Having an indifferent view of the fashion industry, I approached Iris more as a character study of an eccentric old lady who happens to work in the aforementioned industry. However, despite her being an obviously intelligent, witty and colourful character my lack of enthusiasm for her profession sadly also extends to her , and the film itself. Still many people seem to enjoy both. Personally, I don't get fashion. It seems as frivolous as it is pointless. Just like this film, in fact.
