Too many films that rely on secrets stop being compelling once those secrets emerge. Marrowbone just becomes more compelling. It’s one of the year’s most immaculately crafted movies, and it’s the kind of story that keeps dodging convention right up to the final shot. It fits neatly into the Gothic genre, but it innovates within it at the same time.
Sanchez delivers a couple of very effective twists that change the nature of his tale.

The directorial debut of Orphanage screenwriter Sergio G. Sánchez is powerfully frustrating, undone by an ornate storytelling style in which twists only beget more twists, all in service of some fairly obvious observations about guilt, self-deception and devotion.
Handsomely shot, evocatively designed, solidly cast and terribly daft, it also presents your friendly neighborhood reviewer with something of a challenge. With what seems like almost premeditated skill, it saves its worst instincts for the backend of its convoluted and barely credible narrative, a good arm-and-a-half’s-length beyond the impassible “spoiler wall.”
An incessant deluge of subplots drowns what could have been a sparse and beautiful ghost story.
It had a twist that I didn't see coming, which is rare. The cast is great, and all do wonderful performances. The cinematography is excellent. The story is interesting. Unfortunately the scare factor and tension is not what I was hoping it would be. Some of the execution of certain scenes could have been done a lot better in order to raise the tension. Ultimately I watched this movie for one simple reason, which is that two of my favorite actresses are in it: Anya-Taylor Joy & Mia Goth. They both gave excellent performances and on top of that the movie looked great and had a pretty satisfying twist / conclusion in my opinion. So I was fairly satisfied with it.

Not that great, not bad either. It's not really a horror movie. And the ghost parts are too subtle to be scary or interesting.
So, the movie isn't about that. It's about the story. Which is fine, if it was an interesting one. There are certain parts that made me pay attention a bit more than other parts. But ultimately I felt bored 75% of the time. It's one of those movies that explains the plot points along the way. So until you get to those "Aha!" moments, you don't really know what's going on. And that made the movie come off as confusing for at least the first half of it. But at the same time, when something is revealed, it was also interesting enough that I paid attention. I just wish it didn't drag along so slowly to get to those parts.

"What a way to waste such amazing performances (or in some cases, actors that just didn't have enough to perform).
The movie isn't dumb, but the execution of what they do in it has been done before, and way better. We follow a family. Well, that's what the trailer promised us. But in reality, is the big brother that brings the whole story together. Anya Tayler is disgracefully wasted by being just one more of the cast and not a prominent part (Have these writers seen The Witch?). The movie has one great sequence at the start with the family working together and a nice score. After that is boring ""character stuff"" that, with the ending, is just a waste of time, really, and doesn't earn a second viewing.
Being boring in a horror movie is one thing... but just to be clever? You're wasting my time."
