It lulls the audience into thinking it’s only providing historical context. Yet by the end, it reveals the myths, the distortions and the made-up fallacies that have been presented as truth for centuries. And that is the most radical thing it could have done.
The film’s particular innovation is to privilege Black women’s perspectives on the history of American racism, and with the exception of Kendi himself, every expert commentator here is a Black woman.

Wow! This is really revealing. Of course you know that everything behind slavery and servitude is money. So really the biggest racist, discriminatory, prejudiced, abusive, bullying, vehicle is money that makes the stories. Do you know that? I'm talking specifically about usury. If we used a different money that value people, that empowered creating sustainably, that connected us to Earth, all these problems wouldn't be happening.
What amazes me is there are things out there that are not usury or demurrage, that are called neutral currencies, that no one wants to use or care about using. You want the stories to exist one way or another because that's where the money is.
I do not understand humanity.
But what a great doco.

Uma opção do roteiro que muita me agrada nesse documentário é trabalhar não para exaurir um tema marcadamente histórico, mas para concorrer à elucidação de um conceito: "o mito do branco salvador", "o mito do negro criminoso" e assim por diante. A seleção das imagens para corroborar à tese também ajudam, de desenhos animados e filmes a imagens reais, seja elas em qualquer época.
Assim, o filme basicamente é um estudo antropológico dos pilares do racismo estrutural, servindo como base de compreensão atual. Temos aí a intersecção com gênero, a fala de personalidades como Angela Davis, a linguagem acadêmica mas não prolixa, tudo em perfeita harmonia com o retratado em tela. De fato a seleção das imagens impressiona pela simbiose com o que está sendo defendido.
Aliás, por falar em defesa, talvez resida aí seu calcanhar de Aquiles: é um filme com uma proposta muito objetiva, de defender pontos de vistas, e por mais que o faça sustentando-se pelas imagens excelentes e cortes muito rápidos e inteligentes, não deixa de ser um tanto quanto unilateral. É a visão acadêmica e da militância preta que prevalece aqui, e, claro, do século XXI, cheia de interseccionalidades.
Em que pese a falta de contra-argumentação, o filme passa a mensagem (contundente) de forma cristalina, e não sei até que ponto seria producente o conflito de ideias, quando imagens falam por si. Mas ocorre que, com isso, o filme acaba por cair em lugar comum.
Por exemplo, é muito fácil ir contra estereótipos e preconceitos biológicos ou naturalistas sobre uma suposta "raça negra", e de fato essa ideia de "raça inferior", pelo menos em grande parte da população, não se sustenta, por mais que seja chocante ver cenas de supremacistas em pleno século XXI.
Assim, faltou conferir mais materialidade ao racismo estrutural, talvez trazendo dados reais, um panorama mais quantitativo, algo que pudesse justificar o grito. não é que as cenas não dêem conta, como disse, a seleção de cenas está deslumbrante, mas o fato de não trazer pontos de vistas diferentes pode parecer pouco combativo, snedo um filme mito mais centrado no discurso mesmo.
Longe de ser ruim por conta de lacunas que poderiam ser melhor preenchidas, o filme é uma aula de ritmo e de coletâneas, mostrando que os documentários não precisam necessariamente se ater a uma linha linear do tempo para defender uma ideia. Sensacional o fato de mesclarem diversos quadros e imagens entranhados na cultura popular e, com isso, criar um todo orgânico com peso relevante para mostrar o que está mais do que estampado: a necessidade de se revisitar a história e, principalmente, a necessidade de ouvir pessoas pretas para, enfim, fortalecer intrinsecamente suas identidades.
Como dito anteriormente, é um filme antropologicamente instigante, e que pode render uma série de discussões interessantes, com uma linguagem acessível e com uma seleção de imagens das melhores que já vi em uma produção documental.

Though it opens with a strong and colorful idea, by trying to touch on too many complex ideas at once, the final impression left by Stamped from the Beginning remains smudged and unclear.
Even if Stamped from the Beginning frequently weakens its more nuanced scholarship by drifting into Kendi’s trademark good vs. evil narratives, it’s undeniably a well-intentioned film that gets many things right.
Stamped from the Beginning drives home Williams’ point that racism is so deeply embedded in our culture and society and that it takes this kind of fury to talk about it adequately.
Stamped is an inspection of America’s social hierarchies and its ongoing divisions.
In a film brimming with visual gestures, these mini portraits of anti-racists are among its most memorable.
More racial propaganda to stir up resentment towards white people. This is just race bate porn for black.
