The filmmakers do not dive into the protagonists’ lives or elucidate if any form of progress was made after the wins. Maing and Story show that the outcome is the beginning of a generational fight for companies to properly value the labor that keeps them running.
It’s a documentary about the fight, one that takes the necessity of the fight as a given. That’s amply inspiring
Content to tell just one story despite a far more interesting one just under the surface, Maing and Story’s honesty and remove from the filmmaking process has produced an unvarnished, raw document that offers up a slice of history: warts and all.
Union is all the more effective because it doesn’t see the need to argue its case. Instead, the film is free to focus its attention on how difficult and inspiring it was and remains for the Amazon Labor Union to press that case into action — and even just to exist in the first place.
Union is a solid work about an important subject. Yet, while the observational approach gives the picture an urgency and immediacy, it’s a film that might have benefitted from the addition of more contextual background information about Amazon’s labour practices.
