A marvelous new frontier for Guild Wars 2. End of Dragons crashes into Cantha and expands Tyria with more than jsut a new sandbox. It delivers an astounding new adventure on a stupendous scale. It isn't perfect but if this is where he end comes then it's a fitting epitaph for Guild Wars 2.
This is no joke the greatest game I have ever played. I will attempt to do this review spoiler free but it is hard because there is just so much to love. I will caveat that there are probably two groups of people that don't rate this as high. First would be those that loved the old grungy Cantha in GW1. Second, those that come back and forth to GW2 when there is an expansion or it strikes their fancy. For those that have played almost all content and been with it for over nine **** is the magnum opus. It is how Mass Effect should have turned out naturally instead of how the company was forced to half fix due to fan fury. The voice acting, the lines, the hilarity is there and so good it even hits on a second playthrough. The expansion is plenty of content...PLENTY. Took me days/about two weeks even with finally getting started right away with everyone else and playing several hours a day. The masteries are fun and give end game and are not even really necessary. The plot is epic. EPIC. Wraps everything up and gives even EPILOGUE which is often so lacking in games--it isn't the end of GW2 so don't panic or think like a lot of us did that this is the end and how lovely on to GW3....nope. But we do have no idea where we are going next which is amazing :). The final meta event is one of the greatest if not greatest gaming moments of all time. This game/expansion is a true ten. Perfect 10, no one will change my mind. Now if you will excuse me...back to it just because it is that fun!
End of Dragons is a high quality addition to the Guild Wars 2 corpus. However, unless you're a returning player, it probably won't inspire to hop on the Guild Wars 2 just now.
There was a lot riding on the return to Cantha in Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons. It's an iconic location steeped in the franchise's history. Fortunately, the latest expansion delivers an experience worthy of the hype. The end of the Dragon Cycle narrative will challenge you, teach you exciting new skills, and leave you feeling content. The story isn't overly long, but there are plenty of activities to keep you busy for many hours around Cantha.
An expansion with lights and shadows but interesting for Guild Wars 2 players nonetheless. Too much time waiting for a content that looks hurried at some points.
Where the game goes from here remains to be seen, but Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons is exactly the kind of promising expansion the game needed to lay the foundation for its future in spite of these issues, with a core concept and some brilliant moments buoying it through the turbulence of some of its other changes.
10/10
The expansion have great story.
The fishing game is excellent.
The skiffs are fun, especially with friends.
The siege turtle is awesome.
The meta events feel like a combination of HoT and PoF metas merged together but with their good parts.
The strike missions are fun and challenging, especially the last one.
There is a lot of stuff to do in the expansion, lots of objectives to fulfill for you to experience everything the the ArenaNet studio has put into this expansion.
The soundtrack is one of the best in video games I've heard in a while. It tops HoT and PoF soundtracks in my opinion.
Revised score: Down to a 7 from 8/10. Reason: After a year playing the expansion the longevity of the content in EoD maps has slightly decreased for me. Still great but it's natural that when you play content so often it becomes a little more stale.
To the negative reviews... everyone is entitled to an opinion but honestly ignore the 1-3's and take the 10's with a pinch of salt. This expansion was the best selling to date by far, was the most well received content for the game in years and encouraged more people to start playing the game than since it went free to play in 2015. ANET announced that due to it's success they now have more devs working on the game so it's here to stay for a long time yet.
I've played the game since launch and seen both the ups and downs of GW2. The latest expansion, End of Dragons, is a joy to experience - from the vibrant new maps to the shock of a Jadepunk world we have not seen anything like in GW2 up until now. The music is stunning, taking inspiration from traditional Korean music (Maclaine Diemer is a HIGHLY underappreciated composer outside of GW2) and the final battle meta event is honestly one of the most impressive scenes seen in any open world MMO.
The lore of EoD is the best story content since Season 4... maybe even surpassing it. Ankka has become one of my fav characters in the franchise and while not entirely to my liking did well to wrap up the decade long Dragon arc we've had in GW2 and gave hints as to where we are heading next.
Negatives to balance it out: The third map does seem a little barren, could have done with a few more events maybe and with the final map being a smaller meta map the events are few and far between outside of meta time. The Elite specs haven't all been slam dunks with many saying some feel rushed and bland and were very unbalanced at launch however as of me editing this review major balance updates are on their way to fix many of the issues. Finally I'd say that there are indications here and there that make you feel like the expansion was made under a bit of a time constraint... not rushed but just feels like it's missing the odd thing here and there.
I'm a fan of the franchise so I am naturally biased, this review is based on me being a current player but honestly this expansion was and still is great fun and with it being GW2 you buy it and it's there for you to have fun in until the servers shut down. GW2 with all the expacs and Living World content is the best $100 you'll honestly spend on any game.
The downsides:
*The game is showing signs of budget and dev cutbacks.
*4 maps compared to the previous expansion's 5
*No sign of Living World 6 in sight, with the previous expansion Living World 4 dropped in just two months after the expansion's release (Sep 22nd 2017 - Nov 28th 2017). Instead we have repeat content for new players and those who have never played Living World 1. And challenge modes for the 10 man strikes.
*Almost all drops are geared towards making legendary weapons, if thats not your thing ...
*The 2nd map which is meant to be a bustling, busy city (think Bladerunner) seems deserted and empty with cut and paste mobs and repeatable quests, nothing at all like the loading screens. Where are all the citizens ?
*One of the downsides to Guild Wars 2 is that if you've never played vanilla Guild Wars there will be a lot of names and lore that are totally lost on you (some of them mind blowing). The expansion is based in Cantha, an area from vanilla Guild Wars, the amount of hype before release was similar to that when Blizzard announced Warlods of Draenor: We're returning to Burning Crusade get excited !!!
*The game went through a 10 month new content drought along with a truncated ending to Living World 5 just so they could all work on the expansion (with the latter they pulled devs off it and ordered the story to end).
*Once you've obtained the item needed for your turtle mount there's zero incentive to do the meta on the last map. The meta is tough (which as a non raider I don't mind at all), but can fail, you can waste a full 2 hours for no reward. They've added a very rare infusion drop to encourage players to get involved however I've been playing for 6 years and have played map meta events hundreds of times without once ever seeing an infusion drop, let alone transformation potions, or since the start of 2021 the infusion from Khan-Ur. We're talking about a 1 in 10,000 drop rate. Playing the meta for a chance of a very rare infusion would be soul destroying. They need to add more drops, mount skins, pets, skiff and rod skins, transformation potions etc. Or have the map wide meta start from the actual boss fight.
*There should be more gear collections.
*On the plus side, its ***new content*** with some challenging story instanced boss fights if you're going for achievements.
*It was a fun, enjoyable play through though again seemed short compared to the previous expansion.
*I added an extra point for the epilogue, very well done.
*There is no endless gear grind treadmill where all your gear becomes obsolete once every 3 months when new content drops. Your gear stays current, always. Which also means all previous expansion and Living World maps are current, there's absolutely no need or urgent hurry to jump into the latest expansion, if you're into story I would really advise against doing this.
*Fishing is fun once you get into it, and insane if you go for the Cod Swimming Among Mere Minnows achievement (a pun title based on a vanilla Guild Wars title).
This is bad, real bad.
**Cons:
* Story - It became so bad, why does the commander (saviour of the world) who is an foreigner in a new land has to deal with their politics? Why is there even an emphasis on it? Especially when their dragon (which their tech is based on) is in the brink of dying? It wasn't as immersive as it was before.
* Script - Worse, felt like a teenager has written it. It seems they forgot who the commander is and what they stand for.
* Plot - I want to mention this separately, they could've done a better job in showing the end of dragons, Zhaitan had a better end than the water dragon.
* Features - It was fairly obvious that there isn't much new features that can be implemented, the new expansion didn't bring any QoL features, just a glorified revive orb.
1. - Fishing - Another source of resources, great for first few reels, then it just seems like an achievement driven task.
2. - Skiff - Slower than skimmer, good when paired with fishing.
3. - Turtle - Combat mount, good if you have a friend, bad if you play solo.
4. - Jade Bots - Not a great addition, would be useful if it has drone features in future.
* Politics - Why? Just why?
Pros:
* Maps - I liked it, except for the colour saturation
* Music - Good
* Elite Specs - broken, but enjoyable.
* Foes - I finally have foes who are not weak anymore, annoying as it maybe, it was a nice touch.
The story was somewhat enjoyable, but we are waiting for something new for so long now. Pretty much sure to say the game is dead. Even though they announced a new living world series and next addon right with the launch of this expansion, there is nothing to be seen of this promise. But well if the quality of ingame content keeps spiralling downwards - as it did since launch of the basegame - its for the better to let the game die out in peace.
Want to love the game and cherish the roughly 15.000 hours I put into it but sadly cant anymore. Even as a long year veteran I need to say "stay away from Guildwars 2" at this point....
SummaryGuild Wars 2: End of Dragons is the third expansion for the award-winning and critically acclaimed MMORPG Guild Wars 2. The dragon cycle that has sustained and blighted Tyria for ages is collapsing. Mortal hearts and choices will define this moment in history—and echo in the future forever.
