I'm really enjoying my time with Particle Fleet, just as I have with the Creeper World games this dev has made in the past. It takes a departure from Creeper World, in that you control a fleet in space, and instead of a ever flowing goo, there are now enemy particles flying through space. There is a small, but active community making maps to play after the campaign is finished, and creating your own maps and ships is rewarding.
There are many things that I could say about how much I am enjoying this game but I'll try to keep the review to a manageable length. :) Like the Creeper World (CW) games before it, Particle Fleet (PF) has a fairly simple concept that is anything but simple in implementation. Part tower defense and part RTS, it doesn't really fit in any one category. Here are some of the things I particularly like.
Gameplay: simple yet complex. PF has upped the enemy AI significantly over what was seen in the CW games. The AI seems to be less a mindless blob and more an intelligent enemy. It feels a lot more reactive to what you do which makes for more challenging maps. The gameplay itself is crisp and runs well on my computer.
Graphics: nothing to write home about, but I prefer a solid game over a "pretty" one. Even with that, they aren't bad...just simple.
Replay: both "alright" and "fantastic". In truth, you'll beat the campaign fairly quickly. You might go back to get a better time, but there's not a huge pull to do so. However, the strength in PF (as in CW before it) lies in the user created maps. The community makes amazing additions and if you enjoy the basics of the game they'll keep you entertained indefinitely.
The community: this is actually the part I'm always most amazed at. It's a family friendly game and a family friendly community. More importantly, Virgil (the one-man creator of the game) is highly involved with the community. He responds quickly to any bug reports as well as to feature requests.
Anyway, I'm a huge fan of PF and would recommend it to anybody looking for a different type of game. I'd recommend trying out the demo on the developer's web site to see if you'll enjoy the game.
It's definitely a Knuckle Cracker game, with all the elements of the previous games I love. Sort of a Tower Defense and Real-Time strategy game mixed in together. There's an enemy (the particulate, Duh!) with a few variants, such as Stunners, "Struct", which is a static barrier, Emergent which is a mindless moving entity that is derived based on terrain dominance. Then there's an artificial Intelligence - and that, we'll have to wait and see where the game and the map makers take up. Don't be surprised if the Particles can build ships similar to yours and attack you in retaliation.
Not player vs player, but definitely a more variable and mobile opponent than what Creeper were.
Graphics? Well, you've never bought a KC game for it's graphics, unless you are a hard-core fan of retro graphics, in which case nothing has changed.
In Particle Fleet, you can, as in previous games, make your own maps, either using the menu-driven "Simulacrum" (now with 50,000 variables!*), or by hand-crafting them in the map editor. In both cases, if you finally have a mp you like, you can submit it to the community Exchange for other players to play and to tell you how brilliant a map maker you are.
But there's more! You can also make your own ships. If you don't like the weapons choices, simply chose Sandbox mode on any map, include a few ships of your own design, or one from a ship-maker you admire and play to your heart's content. Of course, if you play in Sandbox mode, your time is scored differently that if you play with the same fleet as everyone else. You can, of course upload a map with custom ships and have everyone play with your favorite ships.
* I exaggerated a tad.
Particle Fleet is a fun and engaging game, but i feel like it needed a bit more time in the oven to refine some mechanics. building things can be very slow, and makes you have to wait a long time. The story missions are good, but some can be annoying. Graphics: 7/10 Gameplay: 8/10 Polish: 6/10 Story: 6/10 AI: 10/10
User missions are the life blood of the game
Community:10/10 (besides K75, who broke my kneecaps after i put something in the wrong channel on the discord.)
Honestly, I don't like this game once the rose colored glasses come off. Strategy has been streamlined out of existence. On the tactical side there are few meaningful decisions yet the mere act of moving your units around is tedious. Sound effects get REALLY grating after a while, there's only a handful and the unit-death one in particular is unpleasant and gets used for EVERYTHING. Level editor is excruciatingly bad, unless the ability to accidentally unpause is actually super beneficial in some way I'm too stupid to understand. The campaign has reasonably good levels, especially considering the mechanics it has to work with. However, the story text is a waste of hard drive space.
It works, I guess, and is ok for a few hours and isn't *excessively* an offense to the senses, but there's also stuff out there with actual engaging mechanics and compelling storylines, such as Pong. Knucklecracker's previous game, creeper world 3, was lightyears better in every regard. Get that one instead.
