8-Bit Adventures 2 is the first game I played for 2023, and what a way to start the year of the rabbit! If you enjoy rollicking JRPG adventures, 8-Bit Adventures 2 is worth a look. The game has its flaws, but it gave me a positively enjoyable experience that reminded me why I fell in love with the genre in the first place. A lot of love went into crafting 8-Bit Adventures 2, and I recommend showing some love back and checking out the game for yourself.

Peer past some forgivable anachronisms and Critical Games manages to capture the sanguine charms of early console role-playing games. Occasionally, attempts to capture retro appeal lack authenticity, becoming the equivalent of a mediocre ‘80s cover band. But here, Joshua Hallaran and the team hit almost all the right notes.

All of this makes 8-Bit Adventures 2 shine as a quality game regardless if it doesn’t present any groundbreaking systems in the genre. This game is a love letter to retro adventures that we’re intimately familiar with by now. Rather than push it to be something that seeks to change the experience, it celebrates it. If you’re looking for something that seeks to innovate, you’re likely to find something better elsewhere. But if you want an entertaining, lighthearted, and endearing experience, this is the game for you.

8-Bit Adventures 2 deftly finds a way to combine nostalgic charm and heart in a manner to make everything feel alive. Combat never outstays its welcome and vibrant visuals combine with old-school music to create unforgettable moments on their own. The real heart of the game lies with the character work and depth to its story. These are characters that feel important and matter to the world around them, as every action is taken with purpose. There is a great adventure built on the foundations of the past that harnesses a story so full of personality that it stands alongside classics of the genre.

I’d been eagerly awaiting this game and it was absolutely worth the wait. 8-Bit Adventures 2 pays tribute to the aesthetics, mechanics, andI’d been eagerly awaiting this game and it was absolutely worth the wait. 8-Bit Adventures 2 pays tribute to the aesthetics, mechanics, and storytelling of classic RPGs - think Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior - but avoids becoming a mere pastiche of classic titles. The story lets you play as a party of heroes charged with saving the world from a formidable villain, a child known as the Glitch with the powers to totally disrupt the world. This story arc is a clever nod to the glitches of the 8-bit era, but what could easily be a one-off joke develops into an unexpectedly poignant narrative arc. The writing is consistently a standout, with clever humour, knowing references, and rich storylines adding up to a great experience. The gameplay is smooth and well-paced, with great quality of life features that show that while the devs may be paying tribute to classic RPGs they’re not afraid to innovate when it improves the player experience. Things like the ability to save anywhere, save reminders before challenging boss fights, and a neat combat system that rewards strategising are all great features. You don’t need to grind per se, but the difficulty ratchets up just enough as you progress through the story, striking a good balance between between being too challenging and too easy. Exploring the world is hugely enjoyable, and made more so by the great graphics and catchy soundtrack. Overall, this is a hugely enjoyable game that truly captures the essence of what made the classic RPGs classics. Expand
