  • Summary: Determine the destiny of Rome as you conquer foreign lands and navigate political intrigue in this turn-based RPG. Directly fight with your party of Praetorians, guide your legion to victory, and choose your own path in a story where every decision matters. How will you shape the future of Rome?

Expeditions: Rome is astounding in every area I was presented with. Constantly I felt like there were tons of things for me to explore and pay attention to, and truly simulates how I picture leading an entire war campaign.

Expeditions: Rome is a profoundly in-depth RPG that manages to achieve its lofty ambitions with verve. There are a few potholes in this otherwise smooth Roman road with how steep the learning curve is, but they should get smoothed out in time. For those who loved the tactical machinations of X-Com, but wanted a bit more character development and a personal story, Expeditions: Rome is more fun than visiting the Circus Maximus and Colosseum with a full amphora of wine.

Logic Artists finally did it! They made an epic mix of RPG and turn-based strategy. Roma Victor!

Expeditions: Rome is a very niche third episode in the series. A tactical RPG that is both interesting and efficiently crafted not to bore the player with its lore but to engage him in its beautiful ancient Rome world.

Expeditions: Rome is an easy recommendation for any fan of turn-based tactical RPGs. The variety of gameplay environments, the depth of the combat system, and a surprisingly compelling story with unexpectedly strong characters all carry the experience above the few shortcomings of clumsy UI and underwhelming strategy elements. Even if you have no attachment to the setting of ancient Rome (I sure didn't), the overall scope and level of ambition are worth experiencing first-hand.

Expeditions: Rome deserves a Roman triumph as one of the most impressive tactical RPGs of the last several years, despite occasionally bending under the weight of too many systems.

Expeditions: Rome feels more like a mod with Roman themes than a fully fleshed-out game. From the customization to the design, there are many details that feel unfinished or lack the depth expected of games in the strategy genre. Still, there is fun to be had if players are willing to focus exclusively on the tactics and strategy. Those looking for more of the same coming off Expeditions: Viking will be satisfied enough, even if this new title doesn't feature any major innovations.

The mix between party and legion action is well balanced. The story is well written, good dialogue (with fantastic voice acting for most parts).
The vision of Rome the game delivers is as correct as possible, considering this is a game, not a historical treatise.

Another solid entry in the Expeditions series. After the slight disappointment of Viking, I enjoyed Rome as much as Conquistador.

Another solid entry in the Expeditions series. After the slight disappointment of Viking, I enjoyed Rome as much as Conquistador.

Pros: Enjoyable story and setting, logical and interesting characters, fun gameplay, nice soundtrack (but still not as good as Conquistador's). The squad combat is very enjoyable and I really liked the talent trees and armor customization implementation. The character artwork and voice acting is great.

Cons: There are a lot of mechanics to keep track of, but most are fairly shallow like the camp upgrades, resource management, and strategems. Looting is also an unnecessary burden; running around clicking bodies is not fun, just auto-loot at the end of the fight and show what you got. But my biggest complain is the presence of only four playable classes. The game really would have benefited from perhaps one or two classes from each region to add more flavor. Instead it felt like a chore when I had to use the B-team for pacification missions when it would have been the perfect opportunity for experimentation. My advice to the developer would be cut some of the more superfluous strategy elements and focus on enriching the squad battles.

War becomes a card game, many tasks become repetitive and time wasting, not to mention computer is set to attack you every time when you pacify a region. The long time wasted doing those big map quests eventually worn my patience out. Expand
