Split into two distinct phases, players traverse the realm from a third-person perspective, picking up quests, exploring the wilderness, and getting to know the people they meet. When conflict arises, however, the perspective shifts to tactical, turn-based combat. Players must then make smart use of their units as they fight to win. Set in the vast realms of Antara, a great danger has arisen. A mysterious blight has descended upon its furthest reaches, corrupting the land and all who live there.     King's Bounty 2 is everything turn-based fans have been screaming out for. The traditional RPG elements are executed to near perfection. The combat is challenging and engaging from start to finish. The story is dark, heartwarming, and impactful. Put simply, this game has everything.

    While the turn-based combat remained interesting and stayed true to its roots, and the units have a lot of variety, the newly implemented elements leave a lot to be desired. This coupled with some annoying bugs and an overall sense of an unfinished product make King’s Bounty II a very lackluster experience.

    But all that nice environment design is wasted by far too much wandering about, talking to people, and collecting trash to sell at vendors. Your character moves with a kind of halfhearted jog, too slow to cover ground, jerky, and unable to traverse any kind of obstacle. Meanwhile you can jump on your horse, which is much faster but handles like a stick of butter in narrow areas. It's all just kind of… slow and tedious to progress. Environments seem large simply for the sake of size. Much like the game's entire aesthetic, it's not really clear why things look the way they do.

    For fans of the genre, King's Bounty II is not a terrible game, but it also isn't anything special. The developers purposefully took KB2's aesthetics in a completely new direction from its niche but beloved predecessors and overall the game suffers for it. Instead of embracing the cartoonish charm of past KB games, KB2 was created to look and play like a budget Bioware game, with emphasis on "budget."

    The Good:

    * Good amount of RPG character customization options
    * Lots of army and enemy unit variety
    * Challenging combat
    * Plenty of loot to find (but mostly junk to sell)
    * Very few bugs, and nothing major

    The Bad:

    * Story is bland RPG trope mush
    * Characters are uninspired and forgettable
    * Voice acting is generally bad with little inflection

    The Ugly:

    * Graphics from 2012
    * Facial expressions are stilted or nonexistent
    * Extremely slow running through the world
    * Cannot rebind keys

    King's Bounty 2 is only for hardcore fans of the tactical grid combat turn-based RPG genre when it is available on deep sale (< $20).    … Expand
