The main difference between the remake and the original game is that the latter was outstanding for its time, while the Definitive Edition is “merely” good. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. What’s crucial here is the fact that Hangar 13 approached the original’s narrative with proper respect and refrained from changing it too much. Mafia: Definitive Edition might not be remarkable as an open-world action game, but it still has the story worthy of the most revered gangster movies. [12/2020, p.28]

All this time, the first Mafia was the best of the trio. It just took a phenomenal effort from Hangar 13 to do it justice with Mafia: Definitive Edition. This feels like the rare necessary remake that elevates and builds upon the original. It's truly an offer you can't refuse.

This remake manages to bring the 2002 hit back to life while improving it at the same time. Not only does it offer detailed graphics with good lighting effects, but the animations are very high quality. It's not state-of-the-art technology, but it's very close to it. There are a few synchronization problems and Lost Heaven might be a little small, but it fits Hangar 13's model like a glove. We enjoyed rediscovering the atmosphere of such a well-executed scenario, with its very high quality soundtrack and varied gameplay that gives a real rhythm to the game.

Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Mafia: Definitive Edition features excellent performances from its new cast, a fantastic driving model, and a beautiful and authentic city oozing with 1930s atmosphere like overfilled cannoli. It’s hobbled slightly by its fairly vanilla third-person combat – and it arguably wastes the potential of its entirely overhauled world by not crafting a few new ways to utilise more of it – but it’s still a successful rejuvenation of the best story in the series to date, and one that can now stand beside 2016’s Mafia III as an equal, rather than a quaint but crusty ancestor.

Mafia Definitive Edition is a remarkable example that a remake game should show to gamers. But there are a few glitches that need to be fixed.

Impressive remake, not completely true to the original and with some anachronistic gameplay mechanisms, but it remains the best Mafia game of the series.

The remake stays true to the original, but storytelling and mechanics feel terribly outdated, giving you the impression that this is more of a remaster not reaching its full potential.

This is how you do a remake. I know hangar 13 doesnt have as much budget as rockstar but they still did their best with the budget available.

I could write a whole book about it, but I have condensed it to the following:

Story? Original had some flaws, but the overall storytelling and immersion made me forgive the shortcomings, with the remake, it is the other way around. Unimportant things got improved, important ones got watered down or completely cut.

Aside of the butchered story, I think one thing that goes quite unnoticed is the amount of details/interactivity you had in the original vs the remake. No riding on transport, no choosing your own route to missions, no skill required whatsoever etc..

City seems to have a grey/blue filter to it, and somehow seems more devoid of life than Mafia 1 was...even though it has way more detail. Traffic lights are missing. Also, looks big but is somehow smaller, with less space to drive, and its bushes are made of titanium.

Cars have no textures, just the usual "GTAV" thing that most open world games do these days : vertex paint. Basically means game paints the car whichever color you want with no texture cost. Thats why they are all clean and without much detail.

There is no permanence to the traffic like in Mafia 1, things vanish like in GTA, early cars don't show up in freeride mode once the game is finished. They are simply replaced by 1938 vehicles

Story wise great. Detail great.. Just a shame you dont let us look at the detail as free roam mode had no interiors to explore.. No trains that work. All that time and effort those game designers went to.. And for what for them to be closed in free roam

This is not a real open world game since you can not do nothing other than taking a mission.
this isnt 2002 anymore- you should have made some changes in game play and make it a real open world game and not only dramatic graphic remastering.
other than graphics a big ZERO

... might the developer will update the game with a patch, it is possible that the rating can be fixed as always)

There aren't the moments of scenes that I was expecting from the game. Freeride ride is dead and doesn't even have what the original story had, all the objects and trains are not available for the player to use.
In terms of overall review, this is a minimal game with minimal features and a straightforward story with no deviation. I didn't think it would be this lousy to release in 2021.

No HDR support on PC despite advertising HDR support and not making it clear anywhere that PC would not be getting it.
