What they discover will make them question everything they thought they knew The original NieR release has an interesting history. In Japan, there were two versions of the game: NieR Replicant and NieR Gestalt. NieR Replicant focused on Brother Nier and his sister Yonah. In NieR Gestalt, the main character was Father Nier, and Yonah his daughter. Only NieR Gestalt released in the West (under the name NIER) - so excitingly, this will be the first time many people will have played the Replicant version of the game. Expand

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is one of the most carefully constructed re-releases in recent memory. I was delighted to see just how much of the original experience remained intact, with the bulk of alterations focused on its visuals and combat. While I am happy that NieR: Automata remains a resounding success, its influence over this updated release of NieR hasn’t robbed it of its unique identity; this is, by and large, the NieR that I fell in love with. I think all the new content that has been added to Replicant ver.1.22 is all worth seeing. Looking back at my journey once more with Nier, Kainé, and Emil, I am so happy that one of the most underappreciated games gets another chance to show why it is so special again.

Nier Replicant is a fabulous remaster of a lauded but messy cult classic, improving it without giving up on its essential strangeness.

Thanks to the extensive remaster, this extraordinary, albeit quirky game is now accessible for a wider audience. Nier: Replicant belongs to a rare breed of RPGs that grip you to the very end.

Improved visuals and smoothed out combat go a long way in Nier's update, but it's the story that's the star of the show.

While the game takes a leap in graphical quality, it is more of a short step then a broad jump. Furthermore, Nier Replicant still suffers from the same dull sidequests and the redundant open world it did eleven years ago. However, once you put all this behind you, focus on the fluent combat and enjoy the amazing story, Nier Replicant is a unique experience rarely seen in videogames.

Well-made, yet partially outdated remaster; captivating due to its fast-paced combat and touching story that unfolds over time.

It would be wrong to say there’s never a dull moment in Replicant then, even if at least some of that dullness is deliberate – a way to emphasize our heroes’ struggles. But at its best, you’ll come to understand why it deserves a second chance. [Issue#358, p.104]

It looks better, the rerecorded voices are better and even fantastic where they need to be. And the music that they redid is phenomenal with some much emotion just gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. The story and music are what really steals the show overall and the combat overhaul alleviated my biggest criticism of the original and is great this time. I cant wait to get all endings again i detect another game to Platinum :D (Also cant wait for the next game in this fantastic series, and tbh i would take another Drakengaurd as well please ) Expand

Music - 9/10 (imho Automata wins this one but the music is quite good especially for a 11 year old game)
Gameplay - 8/10 (The sidequests are **** even for a game thats 11 years old, but some of them have an OK story to cover it, most of them dont. Combat is really good and fluid, on par with Automata. The Word system is also well balanced but it falls short if you play on anything other than the Hard difficulty.

It's an enjoyable experience and i'm glad to have played it, but this game also suffers from segments that while meaningful also feel bland. I do understand that this is a faithful remaster and I also enjoyed the new content they added. I just wish they could've found a way to have players enjoy Nier Replicant's beautiful story while also ridding itself of some of it's tedium counterparts. Expand

I have no nostalgia for it and I've played it after Automata, which I'd reccomend heartily. And while undertstanding that this game was made years before Automata, I feel like Automata managed to contain similar ideas in a much better overall package.

Lets start with the good: The story is actually pretty good, and while the lore isnt detailed and has a few plotholes, the characters are so memorable and fun to hang around with, they almost manage to carry the game for me. The game twists quite a few gaming cliches and it sets up some stuff that definitely was picked up by many meta games later on.

Now for the bad: The gameplay and quests are on the range from mediocre to absolutely terrible. The gameplay is a regular beat-em-up that doesnt manage to stand out. Quests are either just fetch quests where they send you from one side of the map again and again, or make you grind materials in a dungeon. The game makes you replay the second part of it 2 times, and while the first replay is interesting and offers a twist on your earlier game time, the second hardly manages to matter and is there just to make you collect all the weapons WHICH IS NECESSARY TO GET THE THIRD ENDING. So its not like you can skip all the boring side quests just to progress the story - you need to do at least some of them. To top it all off, the world itself is so empty and the fast travel mechanic sucks ass - you only unlock it after 10 hours and it only takes you to select locations, sometimes nowhere near where you need to go. You end up with a 15 hour game stretched to 40 hours just because of all the walking you have to do.

It sometimes feels like the game hates you for trying to finish it while offering a really interesting tale with fun characters. It was made years before many expectiations-breaking games and it made some baby steps that Spec Ops The Line and such would follow up on later. I'm not sure if its worth the 60 dollar asking price, as it feels like may indie games have managed to expand many similar ideas since then - including Automata.

Go play Automata tho, that one is a banger.

I score it low for this reason. I have had a very unpleasant time during this game due to the community. if you don't tend to be active in the community then ignore my review, but for some people it's an important part of it.
