The Surge 2 combines a rewarding combat system with a fantastic game world to craft one of the best games of 2019. Fans of Soulsborne games shouldn’t hesitate to check this one out.

The Surge 2 is frantic, punishing and moderately performing, to the point of entering in the ranking of the best soulslike. The flaws are there, but this new adventure will know how to get you right.

Graphics are rarely worth mentioning nowadays, since most games look good or great. That’s not The Surge 2’s case: sometimes graphics are so bad it messes with gameplay, as it gets hard to tell if it’s a puddle of water, poison or a chasm. [Issue#242, p.50]

In the end though it’s the improved combat, minus a few camera issues and frustratingly difficult boss encounters, the progression and build possibilities, and the wonderful level design that go a long way to make up for the lack of narrative drive. Or interest in what happens to the world. In this regard The Surge 2 is an improvement, but an experience that still feels like it’s a few more brutal dismemberment finishers away from finding the right plan to research and build its full potential.

The Surge 2 doesn’t look well aged. The gameplay is basically the same of the first chapter, and graphics are somehow worst. At least farming is enjoyable, and the bosses represent a real challenge.

The Surge 2 isn't a bad game, but it gets some pretty big things wrong. In the end, I had some fun with it, but the broken parrying, awful enemy placement, and bland level layouts made it more of a slog.

I do NOT...I repeat, I do NOT like Souls-likes games. They simply do not appeal to me. All that extreme trial-and-error gameplay. Did not play Bloodbourne, did not play Sekuro, did not play Dark souls.

Now....THAT being Said. I ab-so-lute-ly LOVED The surge 1. For some reason the atomosphere and the whole sci-fi aspect of it drew me in and I played it start to finish at least 3 times in the past few years. And the surge 2 has proven to be just as much fun, and I dare say, it improves on the formula of Surge 1.

The combat system really is what carries the game and the whole sense of progression you get throughout is immensly satsifying.
Unlike some other RPG games where your "Level" is basicly nothing but a stat increase that just scales with the enemies and vice-versa. In the Surge your progression is actually quite noticeble. The enemies stay the same, in the sense that their hitpoints and level do not increase. But your overal skill and armor/weaponry DO increase as you gather new gear and weapons and upgrade them. So the challange remains, but your impact changes drasticly. And that is just very satisfying.
Being able to eventually kill certain enemies with a few well placed strikes whereas before you really had to whither them down hit-by-hit.

The lore is being dived into a bit more this time around, but...this is very subjective to personal taste. To ME, it was fine. I`m quite neutral in this.

The point I am really trying to make is...if you`re usually NOT into souls-like games...then you should give this a try. This game and its series is highly underappreciated.
The whole SCi-Fi genre feels great, and it's more of an exploration/action/rpg than a hardcore souls-like game. *IN my personal opinion.

Get it on sale if you must, but I tell you, it'll be money well spend. The gameplay and the mechnics in this game are enough to keep your entertaint for at least 20+ hours.

Here's hoping that surge 2 finally puts this game on the map, because it does deserve a spot.

"The Surge 2" on the other hand is DECK13's Magnum Opus. *Almost* everything about it stands toe-to-toe with FROM Software's best work. Combat, Level design, atmosphere, interesting lore and wacky characters. I know this is a controversial statement but from a pacing perspective and world building/level design perspective, The Surge 2 comes the closest to achieving perfection since the original Dark Souls. ANd the implant/loot/level prograssion is immensely satisfying and unique. Expand
