If you have any love for the original title, there’s enough new content here with the three additional characters that playing through it again will feel like a fresh experience.
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition arrives in a time when remastered games tend to dominate the launch catalogue of many consoles. Even though many of them are criticized for not offering anything new that their original counterparts didn’t have or at least received some minor additions, it's really pleasant to come across with a title that easily becomes in the definitive version of its own entry. Definitely, a remaster that fans should try.
Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition like last year’s Bayonetta 2 is for hardcore action gamers. It rewards practice and patience. The level design can get repetitive, but the levels aren't really why anyone plays a Devil May Cry game.
A good game wrapped in a great remastered package. Capcom could have just slapped together something with a higher resolution and called it an HD remaster like many are doing, but they elected to actually build upon their seven year old game by adding meaningful content. Granted, they didn’t reinvent the wheel with these extras, but playing as Trish, Lady and especially Vergil are more than welcome additions.
The design flaws that held DMC4 back on release frustrate even more today, and even a raft of new content can't boost this to SSS status. [Issue#127, p.86]
If you've never played Devil May Cry 4, or miss the glory days of the series where Dante was fun, combat was deep and challenging, and things weren't so stupid edgy and serious, this low-priced special edition offers fun aplenty.
True Dante and Vergil are back and kicking ass.Plus lady and Trish.Still crazy and fast.Forgot about DMC.Forgot about new Dante. This is **** you are fan of slashers you must buy it.
Medival demonic rock styled action adventure, offers a wide range of combo and special move skills LvUp to dismembering demonic beasts in a stylish manner unique to DMC, trough linear decent areas with some platforming, secrets and action puzzles, very well integrated medival trillering mini games to survive and challanging bossfights, all in 60FPS, stunning action.
Combat saves, repetitive, shallow
COMBAT - saves the game, it's DMC. Gameplay is cool, frenetic, getting SS rank is rewarding and addictive, each character has a unique gameplay which enriches the experience.
SHALLOW STORY - characters without motivation, expressionless, zero personalities and zero depth. The idea of the demonic arm is cool, but not explored at all. The idea of the dmc story is always kind of like this, but it was very shallow.
REPETITIVE - Worst aspect of the game. Everything is repeated, same enemies, same maps, and same bosses. The game should have 4 different bosses and you fight them at least 3 times, because the game forces you to go back through everything you passed.
LEVEL DESIGN - it's sad, you often get lost not knowing where to go, several times I backtracked the map of previous stages for no reason, 20 minutes on the mission lost. DMC normally has the idea of not making it clear where to go, in 3 it works, not in this one. Besides the ridiculous luck-based puzzles to progress.
BOSS DESIGN AND COMBAT IS SAD.
- Bosses and fights in DMC have to be very good. The bosses are bland and the game forces you to fight them 3 times. (SPOILER: at the end of the game after fighting all the bosses twice, for no reason you fight them all again, in dmc3 this worked because the bosses were good). Even the centipede from dmc3 wins as a boss compared to the ones in this game.
POST GAME: Vergil and other characters forced me to beat the game again, but it was out of sheer hatred. Vergil's gameplay managed to hold me to beat it with him, I beat it in a day because I didn't want to spend any more time on the game unfortunately, given that DMC is a game you would like to play more than once, increasing the difficulties, but this one doesn't. The replayability experience is terrible, unfortunately. I had fun playing, because the playable characters are fun and electrifying, but at some point the lack of plot, structure, and level design takes its toll and not even the electrifying gameplay of dmc holds up and you can't wait to beat it.
