Just Cause 3 - Destruction Dev Diary
Dec 1, 2015Let’s try a metaphor and imagine games as drinks. Fallout 4 is a fine wine, aged, complex, and evolving, likely better with a bit of wait. Bloodborne is a single malt Scotch — dense, overwhelming and rarified. Destiny might be a well made cocktail — a bit trendy, probably too expensive, but eminently satisfying and possessed of a certain technical skill. Just Cause 3 is a Miller High Life. It might not tick those other boxes of quality that those other drinks manage, but damn if I’d have it any other way.
Dec 13, 2015When you’re not waiting for it to load, Just Cause 3 is an incredibly fun game. Crisp visuals and a clever soundtrack bring all the explosions to life. Even with the violence and destruction, it manages to maintain a lighter tone than the Far Cry games, without sliding into the outright silliness of Saints Row. But, it’s still silly enough.

But hell if I'm not having more fun than ever.
Every day I come home and look at my PS4 game collection and think "these are all great games, but I'm feeling lazy as hell. I don't want to think, I want to RELAX."
Enter JC3. Turn on the game, blow stuff up, cry laughing at the awesome freedom afforded to you.
Thanks Avalanche. You know what you are good at and don't pretend to make this game something it isn't. It's good, stupid fun. And I've been waiting for this since JC2.… Expand

Who tells that is repetitive and have no good story, is like who say that checkers is a game without action.
You really can't get bored because you can do anything, and everything is fun and challenging:
you can drive like rally,
fly like ace combat,
kills like shooter,
simply explore large amount of places....
the only thing you must do is "explore the possibilities", you can destroy huge enemy bases with a rope....
yesterday I got revenge against a bad driver making it jump upsidedown two houses with ropes....
what you need in this game is fantasy, because is a SAND BOX, not an adventure game or something... remember it, is not for everyone, sure is not for who like to be driven by railroads.
Drive veichles is CHALLENGING, it's very fun to became a master in car driving or wingsuite flying.… Expand

This is the perfect game to disable your higher brain function and just have a blast playing. Reminiscent of the last-gen titles Prototype 2 and Saints Row 4, just roaming the landscape causing havoc everywhere you please is a blast. The wingsuit is by far one of the best new gear additions and makes movement throughout the game not a chore, but something to look forward to. A great getaway at the end of a long day.… Expand

I'm not saying the explosions and booster explosives aren't super fun to watch, but that's the extent of what's offered here. The side missions are boring, the main character is like a blank sheet. Occasionally they throw a gob of ink on there, only to rub it off with white-out. Some other characters like Dimas are pretty good, but Just Cause 3 lacks good characters. This game encourages me to be creative. In my face, it tells me it will reward me for being creative. And while ten automatic weapons, a missile launcher, and three snipers are shooting at me I'll plant a super intricate chain reaction and be 'creative.' Basically the game consists of main quests, side quests, and taking bases. You'll need to take bases to advance the story. The first couple of bases are awesome as you goggle at the explosions and watch your explosives go to work, but then it becomes repetitive as being creative is impossible as the super aggressive AI works all too well on you. There will be red screens. There will be grinding. All I ever used was a RPG, and occasionally the plantable explosives on big objects. But over all of this, the idea of how you take bases is absolutely ridiculous. Blow the crap out of everything and then the dictator loses the place. What? How does that help the resource starved rebels? Now onto the best parts of the game. The graphics are phenomenal. I've never felt more in paradise in a video game. The explosion effects are awesome too, with pieces of metal flying through the air, and crushing Di Ravello's puny militia troops. I've never had more fun strapping explosives that push things(booster explosives) onto cows and watching them fly through the air in awe. It almost brought tears to my ash caked eyes. The game is extra fun when you're just jacking around, blowing up cars and cows, and testing how far you can free fall. Also, travelling with the combination of wingsuit, grapple, and parachute makes long distances a 'distant' memory.
Overall, Just Cause 3 is great for what it is, but it lacks anything else. If you love explosions, strap right in to your car coated in plastic explosive, and enjoy blowing everything to pieces.… Expand

Nov 28, 2016Waiting an entire year to buy Just Cause 3 for $15 during PSN's black friday sale was a great decision because this game is not worth $60.Waiting an entire year to buy Just Cause 3 for $15 during PSN's black friday sale was a great decision because this game is not worth $60. Somehow the developers made this game less fun than Just Cause 2. The game has such a simple formula, how could they mess it up?
First we should consider how Just Cause 3 is not much of an upgrade from Just Cause 2. The graphics are better yes, but all current gen games look better than last gen games. The game does itself no favors by re-cycling not only buildings but also entire towns. Despite the power of the PS4, the destructible models remain limited to radar dishes, fuel tanks, and water towers. Some destroyed vehicles will split in two, like helicopters, and some destroyed vehicles are blacked out versions of the original, like all the other vehicles. Enemies have the same 360° binocular vision that they had in Just Cause 2. This time, however, if you manage to stay out of sight on a rooftop for 30 seconds they can't find you. A.I. in general is dumb. Enemies will bomb their own sites and shoot rockets at their own vehicles if you are in close proximity. It used to be that you could hijack a helicopter and wreak havoc. Now when you grapple onto a helicopter, all enemy units will destroy it within seconds. Enemy fire and explosions can be so intense that I often had no idea why I was dying.
The story missions in Just Cause 3 are ok. You pal around with a guy who says "It's a me, Mario", a joke that was presented better in Assassin's Creed 2. Mario is not much of a revolutionary fighter, and everything is up to the player character to save the day. Most missions make use of hijacking vehicles and otherwise using your cable to stop vehicles, open doors, or reach high places like Spider-Man. Side note: there are tons of weapons in the game but I cannot see why I would use them when the cable, rocket launcher, and machine gun are so effective from the start. Further side note: why would I ever order a vehicle for delivery when the game is also littered with all kinds of vehicles. The mission structure at times seems broken. One missions tells you to grab a vehicle. I start heading to the nearest military base to grab a tank and the game tells me I am going to far away form the objective. Too far away? In an open world game? Heresy.
The side missions in the game are little more than challenge modes. Sometimes challenges are fun like in Saints Row III. Sometimes they are a boring waste of time, as they are in Just Cause 3. One side mission has the player character drive a boat to explode-able objects, switch to the gunner seat, and then blow up the object from a stationary position. So fun. Last side note, finding all the objects you need to destroy can be a real fun killer. Speaking of fun killers, the game gives you three remotely triggered explosives. You cannot zip around town like Spider-Man, attach explosives to everything, and then destroy it all from safety. No, you can only destroy three things from safety and then you have to go back and attach explosives to three more things. The developers had no idea what makes this game fun.
So all in all, Just Cause 3 is a pretty meh and repetitive experience. It's too bad because Just Cause 2 was one of my favorite games last gen. Just another uninspired sequel that is making the current generation one of the worst generations in gaming history.… Expand
