Gundam Extreme Versus Maxiboost ON is easily the best console release available for these games. Not only does it represent a decade’s worth of serious arcade multiplayer balancing, it also has an extensive singleplayer setup to keep any Gundam fan occupied. Put simply, this is a thoroughbred multiplayer game with an immense amount of depth and variety. The sheer scale of this undertaking may seem daunting at first but stick with it and your path towards becoming a Newtype will be assured.
Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. Maxiboost On is what Gundam Versus should have been in the first place. A more properly thought-out offline suite, split-screen support, LAN mode, a deep roster, and an improved netcode all lead to a superior package that can appeal to even non-Gundam fans. However, the lack of a proper tutorial and some questionable decisions with the online hold it back as a whole. Regardless of these issues, it has absolutely lived up to the hype of players who experienced it during its arcade reign.
Something all fighting games should do is have all characters in the game and not have 20 season passes worth 3 times the game. In this game you have 185 unique playable mobile suits, a lot more than other fighting games asking the same price like Granblue with 11 characters. The game is very mechanical so it may be hard to grasp for newcomers but once you get it you'll wanna experiment and learn more. You can add your own music via USB if youd like so the game can have an almost infinite amount of tracks. Online is very active but rooms fill very quick. Single player content includes branch battle that lets you choose various paths of increasing difficulty to fight the main boss. This mode includes hidden battles and bosses. Maxi boost missions includes over 200 battles with varing conditions of winning and losing. In this mode only you can upgrade your mobile suit with more hp, defense, and mony other effects
This game is the definitive Gundam videogame:
+ Can choose 183 mobile suits from all series, MS Gundam, Z, G, ∀, Wing, Seed, 00, Unicorn, etc.
+ The loadings are pretty fast. Each battle loading time is about 4 seconds.
+ It has music from the different anime series
+ The game lets you import your own music and use it has battle bgm via USB and store it in the install files, so you can import the missing tunes from the series or any music you like.
+ Complex mechanics, it´s not a simple button masher boring as many anime games like Jump Force. You will be punished if you button mash and you have to learn many maneuvers and know the skills of your Gundam and your enemy.
+ Local coop and local vs via split screen. It anoys me very much when companies release games that only have multiplayer online and not local. Many times I decided not to buy a racing game, or a FPS just because this issue, I lke to play with my friends and family local, online is not as fun and fortunately, this Gundam MBON let me play with another player locally.
+ Always runs at smooth 60 frames per second
+ 12.63GB file size (most recent version 1.11)
- It can be a little bit frustrating at the beginning if you have never played Gundam Extreme games.
- The graphics are not impressive. The Gundams looks amazing but the enviroments look simple, but its not an issue.
- Online looks dead. I tried several times to find oponents and couldn´t find any.
- There´s no physical version of this game in America or Europe, only in Asia, so if you want to play it you will have to buy it digital or import it from Asia.
- You can´t record gameplay using the share button, at least it lets you take screenshots. The reason of not being able of recording gameplay is probably because the game has copyrighted songs from the anime series, and of course the music you sill import in the game probably has **** knows.
Gameplay:
It amazes me how this game has so much content. Gundam Extreme games are not new, Bandai has been doing versions of this games over and over and this Gundam VS MBON is the result of those improvements from about 10 years with the different versions, just like Street Fighter II and it´s different iterations.
It blows my mind how this game can be so deep, like Tekken or Guilty Gear in it´s own style. Each Gundam has a lot of attacks, 2 melee, 2 ranged, secondary ranged, different sets od dash, charged version of attacks (depending on your Gundam), variations of melee atacks because your Gundam does different melee attacks depending on the direction when you attack. My conclusion is that if you want to play this game you have to do a liitle research and study of the mobile suit you like to use, it´s advantages, disadvantages and combos.
The game modes:
Against CPU:
Branch Battle: Battle your way across a branching of battle scenes, arranged by difficulty. Cand be played solo, local and online co-op.
Maxi Boost Missions: Use upgrade data to challenge various missions. Solo play only.
Online Modes:
Player Match, Ranked Match, Casual MNatch, Player Match Arena, PS4 Tournaments
Free Mode: Practice mode, can be played solo or with another player.
As you see, there is no story mode and this can be good because the game focuses on the things that it does good. I played some anime based games attempt to implement a story mode which had failed miserably, like Dragon Ball FighterZ, Captain Tsubasa, J-Stars Victory, Jump Force, etc. With so many Gundams from so many different series an attempt to create a story mode probably would have failed. So we a game that focuses on what is good, combat, combat and combat.
Arena fighters simply don't get much better than Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. MaxiBoost ON. Challenging pilots from around the world is so much fun that once you start playing; it's hard to stop so you'll boot this up whenever you want an online fighting fix.
I absolutely have to give Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs Maxi Boost ON credit for its sheer depth of goods as a Gundam fighting game. It packs a lot of fanservice into one game for a franchise so vast and full of different mechs, and it doesn’t lose out on offering a quality fighting system to do it.
Arcade aficionados and Gundam fans alike will have an absolute blast with Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON. While there is a bit of a learning curve, the sheer speed, depth, and fanservice on display make it a shining example of the fighting game genre.
Gundam Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost On brings the venerable arcade series to PlayStation 4 with a huge roster mobile suits, an expanded single-player component, and plenty of cosmetic unlockables. It feels like an odd anachronism in this day and age, but its strengths as a multiplayer game are real, even if it suffers a bit from its poor camera. If you like Gundam even a little bit, you owe it to yourself to at least give this game a shot.
Extreme Vs isn't going to make a Gundam fan out of anyone that isn't already one, but there's a lot to love for any existing fans. The core fighting mechanics are solid, although it's disappointing there isn't more variation in terms of match types. Even still the incredible roster makes up for any shortcomings the game might have, and it's plenty of fun to spend hours trying out scores of different suits with ridiculous flashy attacks.
I guess arcade perfect ports still exist in this day and age. This game has multiple local co-op and local versus modes as well as a LAN feature that lets you play with up to 4 people in a local offline lobby. This game was already amazing but the addition of new content, updates including WiFi indicators and a better lobby system have forced me to give this game a perfect score.
Much better than PS4 Gundam Versus. This is long awaited fan demanded VS game that's been popular in arcade.
Definitely recommended, balanced, it has all kinds of Mobile Suits and Gundams included.
I know next to nothing of the gundam series
So I wasn’t very compelled to play this game I would’ve loved to play some kind of story which not available here ……. not my taste
Prices are too high for 2016 games
Strange bugs and bad network in the first release
As an online battle game, there is no operation
You can only play old content
No 1V1 mode
It really hurts to give this rating, after the disaster that was Gundam Versus, and the marketing for this game, I had high hopes. So lets get the good out of the way first. It has a huge choice of mobile suits, and some that have never been in a game before (especially for the US), for me all I ever wanted was my 00 Qan[T], and this game has 2 versions of it. The other good part, at least over GV (Gundam Versus) is the Maxiboost missions. There is actually single player content in this game and you actually get all the mobile suits in the game and dont have to pay $5 per suit like GV (Why people thought that was ok, I have no idea.). The sound track is also decent.
Now to see if I can sum up all the issues in a short, precise way. So I guess lets start off with what I can only describe as the "feel". You can tell this was meant for arcades, because theres a lot of colors and flashing going on and its not as good as it sounds. It sort of cheapens the experience and makes the game after the first couple games, shallow. That kind of bears out too, because as much as I disliked GV, the combat is missing something. The graphics are a bit arcadey too, GV had better graphics, this looks like a last gen title (at this point 2 gens ago) and I feel like they try to over compensate for that with the flashiness. I will also add just like the last game no English dub either, feels lazy.
Next problem the AI, I have seen some others talk about this too, and it really does ruin the game. If theres one issue that ruins the game, this is it. On the easier difficulties its like too easy, where its not a challenge. Once the difficulty gets past a median point, it just goes from 0 - 100. AI wont take damage even from clear hits, will kill you in 1 combo sometimes even 1 hit (supposed to be impossible), get infinite boost when they feel like it, their shots will sometimes track you to a ridiculous extent thats down right impossible (beams, rockets, allied help, and other attacks will seriously do a 180 to hit you) , infinite ammo, and much much more BS. 1 piece of BS that needs special attention here is the melees. Their melee combos, for some reason they can keep up forever, even hitting you on the ground (your supposed to be invulnerable when your down, it works for AI); but with your combos you will get a few hits in and they go invulnerable. Thats if you can even hit them, because the tracking on melees is the worst I have even seen for the player. It is hard to continue a combo even while the opponent cant move. Not to mention the AI will have infinite boost and dodges so they just dodge non stop and will reverse your melees on you. They also have infinite block as well, thats not a huge deal though because they dont take damage when they dont feel like it anyways.
Another problem is the targeting system/game design. Example: In GV if you and your partner were in a 2v2 (or 2v?) through positioning and commanding your partner you could basically make it 2 1v1s. In this game that is not going to happen. There is only 1 way you can play this game, and that alone really destroys the experience. Maybe I should have put this at the top (lol), but basically what happens is your partner sometimes will help you but its usually a 2v1 (you vs both AIs). This another reason melees cant be used in this game, when you go to melee 1 AI, the other just shoots you in the back, constantly. Remember what I said about the ridiculous tracking the AI can do? Yea even if you think, "I can melee, im moving fast they cant hit me". Boy you will quickly find out how wrong you are. Also not to make this longer, but the targeting system never works right, especially when your dealing with more than 2 enemies. Without fail, when you hit the switch target button it will switch to the target that is far away and not a threat, while the guy rushing you the targeting system will skip over.
I really cant stress enough how bad the AI is in this game. This is what will make you throw your controller through your television screen. Theres a lot of other small issues (by that I mean BS) the AI commits against the player to add up to a terrible experience, but this would be many pages long, and I highlighted the major problems. I am pretty upset by this game, I actually bought it, and had high hopes for it. Best thing you can do is not buy it, not worth the time, money, and frustration. Sorry Gundam Fans.
