A packed fighter with gaming mechanics you’ll enjoy after the initial ten punches. Full of cinematic effects, cliches, big biceps, huge boobs and giant swords. [Issue#290]
Ultimately, that's what you want from a fighting game; something that anyone can pick up and enjoy on their terms. SoulCalibur VI offers an enjoyable story for people who want to get into the lore and characters, fanservice for people that like sex appeal in their fighters, as well as a blend of instantly accessible action and a learning curve for people that want to dig further into the mechanics of it all. Because it is so accessible and enjoyable, I suspect that SoulCalibur VI will become one of my most played fighting games, because it's just that versatile and enjoyable that I'll just default to it when I'm in the mood for a fighter (or looking to play with someone else).
One of the best Soul Calibur games and even one of the better fighting games of the generation. Moves a flashy but balance characters and arenas are stunningly beautiful. The game is very easy to play but hard to master.
SoulCalibur is back with a great game that is a pleasure to play. We are not very happy with the DLC policy or the Reversal Edge moves, but everything else is very, very good.
Given all the recycled and only slightly re-touched assets and somewhat underwhelming presentation in the story modes, SoulCalibur VI feels more like a re-release with some additional content than an entirely new entry. It plays perhaps a bit too safe, wary not to change anything too much, apart from making fighting feel flashier and easier. However, it’s also somehow comforting that the game finds its footing in the familiar turf. Now, I can carry on where I was left off ten years ago in SoulCalibur IV (let’s just pretend that SoulCalibur V never existed) and quench the thirst the way-too early axed Lost Swords left me with.
SoulCalibur VI is an accomplished package and a fighting game that just feels great to play. In many ways it returns to the series' roots with a confidence that's been missing from previous entries, and the result is an approachable, entertaining, and rewarding weapon-based brawler. This is the most assured SoulCalibur since SoulCalibur II, and it certainly shows. At the time of publishing this review, we haven't been able to test the game's online features. Once online multiplayer is up and running and we've spent some time battering filthy casuals, we'll update this review with our thoughts and republish.
On paper, it seemed great. A new Soulcalibur game with 20 characters launching on the current generation of consoles! But what we got looks like a copy and paste from something we’ve played before.
Possibly the best game in the series. Story mode is simple and inexpensive but every character gets his or her detailed story. Some people will complain the story isn't all cinematic like Mortal Kombat, but they don't have the money for something like that. Still i prefer the way soulcalibur does its story mode over ant other fighter.
A solid entry to the SoulCalibur series.
Similarly to the previous games, the story mode is unfortunately uninteresting at best, but everything else is pretty good.
Gameplay-wise, it's fun and varied, the character roster is nice and the character designs are creative and cool.
Customization is top tier as always, there are so many things you can customize in your characters, it's easily one of the best parts of the game.
Also, the amount of content is satisfying, and the multiplayer is decent.
Personally I'm not really a fan of the fact that many characters are paid DLC, I wish there was a progression system where you can unlock characters, but oh well...
Overall I think this game is good, but there's definitely room for improvement.
Final Rating: "Good" ~ 7/10.
Pros:
- Great single player experience with a custom made character.
- Tons of customization options.
- Combat & gameplay is great overall.
- Biggest SoulCalibur in the franchize, it takes all the most beloved elements of the previous alterations
- The Reboot brings back the most beloved characters.
Cons:
- Shady DLC practices
- Reversal Edge takes too long to finish (should have just been a simple counter, like in DoA)
- Boring OST
Flavor:
- Fan service
- Custom made characters with wrong frames can be played in ranked
- The main story mode feels more like an RPG than a fighter.
I don't think any SC game will capture the passion that was in SC IV. All the characters look the same, what the hell? They all have the same model, no nuances whatsoever on their muscle tone, so all the women look like buff dudes with different height, and everyone has the same eyes and mouth. It looks way too bad. The gameplay also suffered from the introduction of the rock-paper-scissors mechanic which is perfect for amateurs to spam.
The tutorials are insanely boring and fighting games need to work on that, especially on such a complex game as Soul Calibur is comapred to Street Fighter and Tekken.
Finally, the story was very badly handled, both for the created character and the main story. Not only is the choice of protagonist very bad, but every character is separated into different chapters, so you don't get this intertwined story and get instead these "filler" chapters for all the characters you enjoy.
The created character story is the most uninspired thing I've ever seen, and it took me 6 months of forcing myself to finish that utter trash, and even then I almost gave up on it. It also shows how BAD the character creation system is when all the NPCs you meet just look like randomised characters with the same face and model.
A you should definitely avoid this game, I was only **** into it because of my love for IV and 2B being in it as a guest character, which by the way, they should be FREE, not paid DLC. The creators even had the gall to say the series would continue if it sold well, but the problem is, you gotta make a good product for it to sell well.
The game has a very deep and engaging combat mechanics which is very stratifying to master. However graphics looks dated, the loading is painfully slow and there is very limited progression system. The story mode is just a disgrace - basically you flip thru few powerpoint slides before the fight. They need to improve interface and make single player progression and stats better. I need to know what characters I already mastered, how many fights this character won/lost, best times, etc. Multiplier interface is even worse - no wonder almost no one is playing this game online. Bottom line is that great game mechanics ruined by horrible interface, slow loading and poor graphics
