Necromunda: Underhive Wars is a mixed bag of assorted delights and horrors. The story is well put together, but it fails to completely explain the rules. The combat can be fun, but the AI is completely retarded. There is a lot to do in the game, but you also need a lot of time even to do little. As such, just as the tabletop game is based on, Necromunda: Underhive Wars proved that it is not for everybody. You need patience and you need to have passion for the deep tactical approach, to enjoy what the game offers. Still, despite all its shortcomings, the game can be fun for the right audiences and has a lot of potential that shines through especially in multiplayer.
Necromunda: Underhive Wars is a great strategy game, with pacing that leaves the entire experience marred. The slow crawl of progress is enough to drive you insane, but despite all of that, it's still a darn good time. If you have a lot of time free and enjoy Warhammer, this is a solid choice, but I'm praying we get an update with a game speed increase option - or a mod, for the PC version.
It's an okay game. It has similar gameplay and campaign structure (and similar problems) as Mordheim, so if you liked that one, you'll probably like this one. But the game has a lack of variety in mission types, released with too few gangs and features, and way too many bugs and A.I. problems, and the half-baked Story mode is basically a glorified tutorial. Some of these problems have been alleviated somewhat, but it still needs more work. However, the maps themselves are well designed and look the part, same for the gangs. And the gameplay loop, however shallow it might be, can still be fun for what it is.
A significant design change from Mordheim, however, is that there are no more "hidden" units. The game shows you the movements/positions of all enemy gang members. This is closer to how the tabletop games work, but some may not prefer the change. I'm indifferent, personally, though giving the option to speed up the A.I. turns is necessary.
The biggest issue for me, aside from bugs and A.I. jankiness, is the INSANE movement allowances for the units. And they still haven't adjusted this, last I played. Units can practically traverse half the map (maybe more) in one turn. And the devs seem to think this is perfectly fine? Unreal. Anyone can go anywhere, it trivializes strategic positioning, and you only have to worry about enemies in overwatch, maybe traps, which I'm not even sure if the A.I. utilizes....probably not. Hopefully they'll gain some sense and fix this huge issue.
There is a lot to like in Necromunda: Underhive Wars, and there are some fresh ideas that bring a welcome change to the turn-based strategy genre. But those positives are let down by an overall lack of polish and finish. Combat drags on a bit more than it should, and the initial phase of learning the game is pretty frustrating for newcomers, without a whole lot of help from the developers. If you are a fan of the Warhammer universe, and especially if you’ve played the Necromunda tabletop game, you should definitely check it out. Otherwise, you might want to wait a bit for some updates.
While we would have preferred to see an adaptation of the grunnier 90s tabletop game, Necromunda: Underhive Wars is still a thorough, faithful adaptation of a Games Workshop classic. Its strategic skirmishing gameplay can prove rewarding, but it's clunky and gets bogged down by technical issues and stodgy pacing. Necromunda fans will delight in being able to create their own Underhive mob though casual fans of the genre may want to stay clear if they’re not particularly fussed about Warhammer 40K.
Although Necromunda: Underhive Wars does have some interesting features, particularly with its vertical level design and emphasis on individual units, its flaws may be too much for some players to look past. When it's all clicking well it can be a futuristic thrill, but it can become tiresome quickly when things become too slow. Fans of the tabletop game may be pleased to see Necromunda get another lifeline, but it may be a little too obscure to be a must-have for anyone else.
On paper the game has it all; in
reality, Necromunda is clunky,
plagued by bugs, including hard
crashes and desynced audio,
and an old-fashioned approach
to the genre. [Issue#181, p.94]
Necromunda: Underhive Wars is its own worst enemy; no game should be in a constant war with itself to be playable. Instead it should show off its map and objective variety with a completely capable combat system. While it is possible the game can be redeemed with multiple patches and quality-of-life improvements, for now it is a rushed and half finished experience with only faint hope that anything can be salvaged.
Interesting gameplay and story. However, save your money until the game is patched or severely reduced price. Been unable to finish the main single player campaign due to game crashes.
Honestly, I wanted to say so much but I don't really want to put the energy into it. So I'll say this. The game plays like XCOM. And I realize it is tagged or marketed as a turn-based strategy game. Okay but not all turn-based strategy games play out like XCOM. I mean hell final fantasy is a turn based strategy game for the most part.
I feel the need to say that because the trailer I watched and the pictures I saw honestly gave me no idea how the game played. And callin it a third person game is completely unnecessary. Most games are third person, I only need you to tell me it's third person if it's a third person shooter, like gears of war.
Anyways I was only able to make it through what I assume is supposed to be the tutorial battle. I didn't teach me anything. I skipped the beginning cinematics cuz they were so boring so I have no idea what the story is about to begin with.
Honestly it's just one of the worst games I've ever downloaded and wasted time trying to play.
By all means if your patient enough to give it a shot and you like games like XCOM (which I lived XCOM) go for it. You do you, but in my opinion, the game isn't worth the space it takes up on any catalog of games offered to you. Whether you play on steam Xbox PlayStation, I don't care. It's just wasting space.
