Involving and exciting characters, storylines, and battles keep you glued to your seat - and keep you from noticing the many hours you spend playing this amazing game.
  2. Spanning four discs, this is a massive RPG. You can try and skate through it in 50 hours but can easily spend over a 100 hours playing if you decide to take on all of the side games, collect all of the Cards and experience all there is to experience from this game.
  3. Between the story, the beautiful graphics, music score, and the insanely enthralling card game mini-game, Final Fantasy VIII does the series proud.
  4. The game's major weakness is in the combat system - there's too many loopholes that can be exploited with the Draw technique, making combat tedious and mundane after a while.

Things were more "real" this time around. [Feb 2003, p.97]
  6. I just can't say enough about the graphics in this game either. After you play all the way throuugh this game, you will not be able to say that you did not get your money's worth.

A travesty. A mockery of the good name of Final Fantasy.

The only downside I have to point out in this game is that it ends. A lot of people whinge about the battle system, I never had any issues with it. The only mechanic that didn't seem to work too well was that you always only need 1000exp to level up meaning you can't really "catch up" to higher level characters. Expand

Best JRPG of all times. Is a little bit better than Final Fantasy VII, which gives it the extra score up to 10 in my opinion. The artisticBest JRPG of all times. Is a little bit better than Final Fantasy VII, which gives it the extra score up to 10 in my opinion. The artistic design is more adult and detailed, the history is more adult too. All game localizations are much more diverse between them and make you wish to explore them. The battle mechanic is improved, using magic as an item and the Guardian Force collecting and summoning. The game is also full of secrets for the player to discover and use in its benefit in later battles. The soundtrack is amazing and helps very well at setting the right gaming ambient. Expand

The only bad thing about this game is the poor character writing most of the characters don't have enough screen time, it's only Squall and Rinoa.

One of the reasons that it is good is that it's a lot different from other Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy VIII manages to include Science Fiction aspects as well as a great fantasy story that fans of the Final Fantasy series have come to love. The battle system is nothing special but the very unique story makes up for the flaws that this game has. Expand

The battle system sticks out from the other FF entries and tries to do something a little more original than the traditional FF norm. It has it's flaws, but overall good. The world feels a bit more cheerful and not so depressing compared to FFVII's Midgar. Also, the visuals are some of the best on PSX, especially the blending of FMV's during gameplay. Very cool! Underrated music and game in general. Expand

And even when understood, it was not nearly as fun as FF7's materia system, FF9's abilities system, or FF6's job system. And seriously: only 6 playable characters this time? Too few. And none really that interesting. Even if it was not sandwiched between two great games 7 and 9, FF8 would still come end up at the bottom of my trash. Expand
