Sea of Stars is an amazing-looking and sounding title that has captured all you love from classic turn-based RPGs and improved upon it. I can’t recommend this game enough; this is how you modernise and pay tribute to a classic genre.
I had high hopes for Sea of Stars from the moment I first laid eyes on it, and I’m pleased to report that it has lived up to just about all of my expectations. It’s gorgeous, fun to play, has a great cast and story, and the music is a joy to listen to. Whether you are looking for a nostalgic experience inspired by classic RPGs or simply a great RPG in its own right, look no further than Sea of Stars.
Just an incredible retro inspired JRPG. Amazing art. Amazing music. I loved the characters. In a year with a new Zelda, Final Fantasy, and BG3 I didn't expect for this to be my GOTY. Just ticked all the right boxes for me. Loved it. Thank you!
I wish to see more AAA games take as example games like this one.
Because this demonstrates that if you build a cool classic turn based game you can still build a great AAA turn based game to play
Sea of Stars has clearly been made by people with a deep and abiding love of JRPGs. That level of passion is hard to mimic, and the result is a heavily playable game with morish visuals, a cracking story and deeply considered level design. However, while it is very good, it isn’t quite perfect. Combat needed to be deeper (or at least escapable) and while the dynamism was a great touch, it wasn’t enough to carry it all the way through to the end.
It's a joy and a relief to realise that Sabotage hasn't merely mimicked classic '90s JRPG, but committed to understanding what makes them tick. Its nostalgia is neither gratuitous nor cynical, instead working disparate references together with original ideas into a coherent whole. While it's a little disappointing to discover that there's isn't great depth to the turn-based battles and other systems, the immense quality and detail in the pixel art, soundtrack, location design, characters and plot ensure that Sea of Stars remains a stunning achievement to the end.
Sea of Stars is a pitch-perfect nostalgic take on a JRPG, with beautiful visuals, a fun combat system, and a top-notch soundtrack. My only major criticism is that the story is a touch weak and disjointed, and the combat system falls off a bit toward the end. Sea of Stars hit its mark hard, and it's a damn impressive first effort from Sabotage Studios. If you've been looking for a simple, fun and lighthearted old-school RPG, look no further than Sea of Stars. It's not quite a new classic, but it doesn't need to be, either.
I absolutely loved Sea of Stars. I was swiping through Tiktok and came across a video in which it caught my eye due to the beautiful pixel art! I immediately decided to try out the demo on steam and I was highly impressed by the mechanics! The soundtrack is also great.
I paid full price for this game on the switch and I was glad I did because it feels very much worth it for $34. I will be supporting this studio in the future for making such a high quality game and made available through all platforms. The story line to this game was captivating as I progressed it became more and more interesting especially the plot twist!
For anyone wondering on this game do give it a try especially if you are an RPG fan. It is definitely worth the play through
Sea of Stars starts strong with a tutorial that's way too long. The combat starts interesting and you start getting the hang of the sync abilities and whatnot and you can't wait to get more abilities... right? That's the thing, you play with the same abilities throughout almost all game (I played for about 12 hours before giving up in the isles chapter).
The OST is awesome and the pixel art is pretty great, but that's it really. Even the story was very stale.
Overall, this game feels very lackluster, basic, hackneyed, and uninspired. Only a single character stands out at all in this game.
Seemingly a lot of people like the music, but I am not a fan at all. In fact, I hate the music. To me, it's headache-inducing, grating, uninspired, and flawed musically on many levels. I was very surprised that the composer was an experienced Japanese VG composer. It's too bad they couldn't get Shimomura who did Super Mario RPG's soundtrack.
The game's combat is like Super Mario RPGs, but with a bit more depth. The characters, story, and other gameplay are, largely, significantly less interesting, though. The equipment and character stats leave a lot to be desired - it's all extremely basic, uninspired, and barebones. The same can be said for the vast majority of the gameplay, plot, and writing. It's all I wish there were more than just 2 female playable characters. One barely has any personality and the other is annoying. Tragically, just have not been enjoying the experience much. I feel like a different soundtrack would've helped it a lot for me.
This game is an unbelievable pain in the ass. And it flipping kills me as the storyline is absolutely fantastic. The combat is a chore. It's like they took the Mario and Luigi formula, misbalanced it by making every damn enemy hit like a truck, and then go, "Hey that'll do." Sure I can augment the game and make it easier, but that just feels like cheating. It really should have been the default option. Also you can't run away from a single fight. It takes one of the most basic turn based functions and doesn't give you it. That coupled with every enemy hitting like a truck, makes the inbetween boss trecks precarious, tedious and frankly unforgiving, but then the bosses have the easiest telegraphing and go down like sacks of crap. Stick to making notoriously difficult platformers Sabotage. This is a chore. It gets a 4 for its brilliant story and nothing else.
SummarySea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. A prequel story set in The Messenger's universe, it tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmanc...
