A new battlefield appears in the "EDF" series. This time, the world becomes the square Earth. The name of this game is "EARTH DEFENSE FORCE: WORLD BROTHERS".

This game takes place in the 3D voxel world, which everything is made up of square pieces. In this world, the Earth is not round but square. And now, this voxel Earth is fallen apart into square pieces, breaking its blocky peace. But whether round or square, the Earth must be the Earth. So now, the player and the "EARTH DEFENSE FORCE" must rise to the occasion and save the day to restore a shattered Voxel Earth to one peace.

I was concerned that D3 Publisher and the development teams behind EDF were losing sight of the purity of vision behind what they were doing. Iron Rain painted a bleak vision of the future of the series. Thankfully, the developers themselves seem to have realised what a misstep Iron Rain was, and the team at Yukes has pivoted a full 180 degrees with World Brothers. This game is just such great fun.

This fresh take on the EDF franchise got almost everything right. Decimating alien invaders is as fun as you’d expect it to be, and the ability to instantly switch between 4 characters (there are over 100 of them to unlock, each with a unique weapon and a special attack!) makes the voxel-powered destruction even more thrilling. I only wish the Switch version ran smoother and the split screen mode wasn’t exclusive to PlayStation. [08/2021, p.57]

While Earth Defense Force: World Brothers innovates nothing, it is incredibly fun. It more than makes up for its lack of originality with a clever, family-friendly graphical style, and boatloads of content. Anyone looking for some mindless shooter action can’t go wrong with World Brothers. I highly recommend it over other games mainly because of the size of its enemy swarms, the scope of its destructible buildings, and its endless amount of content.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers is an incredible, silly, and addictive action game. It makes smart and satisfying changes to the core formula of the series that make it one of the most enjoyable entries in the EDF franchise to date, and it has the potential to be one of the most exciting co-op games you've ever played. It's only downside, though, is incredibly major -- the Nintendo Switch version is plagued with graphical issues that significantly impact the quality and fun factor of an otherwise amazing game.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers on Nintendo Switch is a fun game with great gameplay, humour, a ton of content, and customization but one that is better played on another platform unless you absolutely only want to play on the go.

We can’t help but feel this is a price-tag that is directly punishing dedicated Western fans of the game, and acts as a huge barrier to newcomers. We can therefore only really recommend Earth Defense Force: World Brothers if it gets a healthy price cut – because as it stands it’s a well presented but illogically overpriced slab of mindless entertainment.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers brings a new visual approach to the EDF series but while the aesthetics are new, the gameplay experience remains mostly the same, though more accessible for a wider audience. World Brothers also brings a myriad of characters, which help make this a rich experience, but the lack of local co-op multiplayer using a single Nintendo Switch and EDF's usual performance issues end up harming World Brothers for those players less familiar with the series, as well as its high price for what's here. Regulars and veterans will certainly enjoy what's here, though.

World Brothers is funny, still gameplay solid, with tons of things to collect, filled with arcade vibe music. Another game in the series, another gem. Expand

But I’ll tell you what, it pretty quickly and easily turned me into a fan. It’s all about giant bugs and kaiju-sized monsters, the end of the world, and blowing everything in sight up real good… and while perhaps that doesn’t make it terribly nuanced it sure can be a blast (quite literally). While I obviously can’t contrast it with previous entries or comment on how it has either evolved or stagnated in the greater series, viewed as a stand-alone title I’m impressed by the great voxel-based look which works perfectly for maximum destruction, the pretty wide variety of compatriots you’ll rescue along the way to continue to add more diversity into your squad, and the bonkers story that makes no attempt at all to let concepts like reality enter into the mix. Best yet, you can enjoy it with friends or even online, though as always I’ll throw in the caveat that online support for Switch games outside of the massive AAA titles tends to come and go in a hurry. All in all it’s a great and ridiculous distraction from all of the troubles you may have, allowing you to lock in, destroy everything you see, and embrace the controlled chaos of it all.

It’s good fun as a mindless shooter, but wtf is up with the gyro controls? The game decides how you hold your switch/pro controller so you’re looking forward, which is at some mad angle. You can’t calibrate it yourself or use the sticks to realign, that we could find anyway. If I’m wrong please let me know but that bs really let’s the game down, so can’t go above an average 7 Expand
