It's not a bad game, but after four or so years, it just feels like it ought to be better. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 35E]

Sonic Forces isn't a particularly bad game, it's just a game that never seems to find it's true potential. An overly complicated story and some design flaws stop Sonic Forces just shy of greatness, leaving a decent enough experience to enjoy.

It’s not a great game, but it’s solid. It looks nice, plays smooth, and the gameplay variety is solid. It’s an average 3D Sonic game at a budget price, and that’s not really a bad thing.

Sonic Forces is a disappointing rehash of everything that has been done wrong with the Sonic franchise in the past. There were some good ideas here, but none of them were executed in a way that was fun or enjoyable.

It's mostly just exceedingly average. Levels are short enough where I never once felt like they were a chore to complete, and there's enough variation in there in terms of setpieces where you can really start to see the framework of an expansive, epic Sonic. Hopping around Eggman's base in space while navigating moving platforms gives me flashbacks to the great pair of Sonic Adventure games -- a simpler time.

Sonic Forces ultimately fails to advance the mechanics of previously successful 3D Sonic games, or present them in their best light. A mediocre platformer at best, Sonic Forces manages to do nothing more than reinforce long held stereotypes against Sega's beloved blue blur.

Sonic Forces may have created some hype but unfortunately, it mostly falls flat on its face as it quickly becomes obvious that this game is an exercise in disappointment. While the action runs smoothly whether on a television screen or on handheld mode, the game's short and unimaginative levels, the absence of gameplay mechanics that had become a staple of 3D Sonic games, the unreliable controls and the mediocre soundtrack all add up to a very flawed game from which a lot more was expected.

Great Graphics, for a switch game. 30fps sadly but its on a under powered console. Great Soundtrack except Green hill Classic. Fun Gameplay.Great Graphics, for a switch game. 30fps sadly but its on a under powered console. Great Soundtrack except Green hill Classic. Fun Gameplay. Classic Sonic feels better to play as compared to generations but worse compared to Mania, as Havok engine can't emulate Sega Genesis Physics. I wish Modern had the Drift but i only can think of 1 stage where you need it. Avatar feels great, Adventure gameplay with Wispons. Overall this game is great Solid 9/10. Expand

So, bad game huh? I don't think soo.
    Let's talk about gameplay first
    Modern Gameplay:
This is my favourite in this game, it gives a good felling of speed, thats what Sonic is, Speed, the gameplay is also good, but what makes me sad is sometimes the level disgne don't have nothing but a path to run on
    Classic Gameplay:
It's nothing new but this gameplay is good, don't Mania fisics but is Classic, it has drop dash, and I love drop dash
    Avatar Gameplay:
The customization is soo big and good (I love the customization) but the gameplay don't, is just awfull this gameplay, whatever Wispon you have, still the same thing, and the fisics, boi were comes crap
    Tag Team Gameplay:
It was allmost good, if the Avatar screw everything
    Grafics:
Its just... beatifull, i love HE 2 and the grafics show so much
    Music:
The main themes (Especially Infinte's Theme) are soo good, Sonic never fails at music
    History:
Sometimes the histoy is edgy, sometimes is chessy, don't need Classic Sonic but without that the history tries

With all that I think Sonic Forces is 7/10 Mania is better I know but I love more Sonic Forces for some reason and now is one of my favorites Sonic games along side Mania

The game is just okay. Creating/playing as your own characters is good fun (Orange da Bird is the best character[DOs NOT STEALZ!1!11!@#!2]),The game is just okay. Creating/playing as your own characters is good fun (Orange da Bird is the best character[DOs NOT STEALZ!1!11!@#!2]), it's nice to play Classic Sonic again and it all looks and sounds great(though it's 720p/30fps on Switch and looks rough). That being said, everything feels short. From the length(about 3 to 4 hours long) to nearly each level, everything feels like it could of been longer. I don't even mind that Modern Sonic feels on rails, most of the time. Everything just feels short. Also, the storytelling is just unintentionally funny. Seeing Sonic getting beat'en up to how your character got to join up with Sonic's gang made me laugh. I mean, I should complain that much cause I got some laughs, but hey that's just me.

In the end, if you like Sonic, give a rental or wait for it to drop down in price(even at the price of $40, it still feels too expensive).

Short summary for those who have no time to read a whole paragraph: its got a bland story, terrible music, cheesier than usual writing, mostlyShort summary for those who have no time to read a whole paragraph: its got a bland story, terrible music, cheesier than usual writing, mostly crap level design aside from classic sonic levels which barely scrape average, and overall, you can have a more enjoyable time playing Sonic 06 than this game. When this game was first announced i was excited, the Avatar with the multiple weapons looked great. and you know what, those weapons were pretty great...and that was it. This game is a terrible flop, from not knowing what it wants its own tone to be, to writing that makes 80's Saturday morning cartoons look like genius works of art. The levels are pretty bland, the 3D sonic ones being the worst i've seen ever. The bosses are uninspired, with half of them being auto scrollers where you keep running till you hit the enemy. here is a direct summary of how i beat a boss, "run in circles to dodge and attack, one well timed jump to dodge attack, one jump to dodge a shockwave, then mash homing attack" repeat that 4-5 times and boom, that's a boss fight. Now, you may think "well, its a sonic game so its saving grace must be the music right"? well i wish that were the case. The music is a mixture of overly high pitched auto tune sounding vocal tracks, and dubstep, the latter of which has a very short loop in most tracks. The only reason i won't put this game any lower than a 5 is simple, it CAN be enjoyed to some extent with how bad it gets, but thats minimal at best. Expand

It's not the worst game SEGA's made, but for the time spent on the game, there should've been more polish, because the game felt rushed. 30 levels, each 2 minutes long. The game can be beaten in 3 hours on a first playthrough, and that's only due to the insane difficulty spikes and Classic Sonic's whack controls. It's not amazing. Expand
