It's a brilliant concept, well told, and backed by Atlus' skill with turn-based combat at its peak.
The idol-centric story may put some off, but Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is still a dynamite RPG that features an excellent combat engine and wonderful, flashy visuals.

Very underrated in the west compared to how good it is. Awesome combat system, characters and music also makes it a very enjoyable experience. A must-play JRPG on Switch and Wii U.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a good role-playing game, with a great story, good soundtrack and very funny and always surprising introductions of new mechanics throughout the adventure. This version also adds a lot of content, so if you didn't play it on Wii U it's a good chance to give it a try.
For good or ill, Tokyo Mirage Session #FE: Encore's biggest strength and biggest weakness is that it's pretty much the same game you may have played on the Wii U. It runs better, it looks better, and it has some nice quality-of-life improvements, but it's basically the same game. Is that worth $60? It depends on how much you enjoyed the game in the first place, or if you missed it due to it being a Wii U title. Anyone who is a fan of Persona-style games will almost certainly enjoy it. JRPG fans hoping for something to tide them over until Persona 5 Royale should find a comfortable home in the weird world of Tokyo Mirage Sessions.
While I never found myself all that engaged by the story or its characters –both integral parts in an RPG– I did enjoy the little interludes in between main missions. There are catchy song performances and music videos to bop to, along with cutesy outfits to put on your characters as you progress further.
Let's be clear: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore isn't a game for all. Its gameplay, very close to Shin Megami Tensei, is rather complete and interesting enough to catch the Japanese RPG lover in you. The nature of its scenario and the themes it explores may surprise you. Approaching J-Pop without complex, #FE goes completely wild with a sharp universe and a story so absurd that they end up generating more awkward laughs than empathy: if Japanese culture isn't your thing, move on. On the other hand, if you've always dreamed of saving humanity with your idol talents, you can go for it without hesitation.
Gone pretty unnoticed during its first release on the Wii U back in 2015, the title developped jointly by Atlus and Intelligent Systems was and still is a niche game, mainly aimed at both JRPG and J-pop enthusiasts. This second iteration only provides some new minor features such as costumes and an original dungeon, where the characters dreams can be fulfilled... Quite a program, but still technically flawed, specially on TV mode.
This is a wonderful game that deserves way more recognition. While it may be a little too cheesy and it has some annoying anime tropes, TMS is a very special game.
The setting and story are pretty unique, the characters are trying to make their way into the Japanese show business and along the way they have to fight with the obstacles of the industry and their own personal demons, this is represented with demons and dungeons in a similar style as Persona.
The gameplay is fantastic, one of the best combat systems of any JRPG ever, its addictive, accesible but deep and very eye-candy. The presentation of the game as a whole is really good, very vibrant and colorful with a ton of style. The music, while not my style, its really well produced and fitting with the game, its high quality J-pop for the most part.
The whole vibe of the game is quite light-hearted, maybe a bit too much for a Shin Megami Tensei spin-off but its really charming and quite engaging.
An absolute gem, a game that always makes me happy, great gameplay, great presentation, likeable characters, unique story, its just really good.

'Tokyo Mirage Sessions' es un juego curioso y único, pero está muy por debajo de la calidad que usualmente manejan por separado las dos series que busca fusionar.
Lo bueno:
-Es muy interesante la manera tan lateral en la que combinaron ambas franquicias con el tema de las Idol y su industria.
-La jugabilidad es como la versión amigable de Shin Megami Tensei.
-Los personajes con carismáticos.
Lo malo:
-Por muy interesante, esto es lo último que uno hubiera pensado que sería el resultado de combinar FE y SMT.
-Lo que aporta Fire Emblem a la mezcla es más bien anecdótico. En su gran mayoría esto en SMT.
-Demasiado fácil para su propio bien.
En conclusión, es un título original en su concepto, entretenido y técnicamente muy pulido, pero que no tiene la calidad de las series que combina. Y bueno, temáticamente ni las representa bien realmente.

Está bien a secas. Los elementos de fire emblem son mínimos y se toman tantas libertades creativas que ni sé notan.
El combate es divertido pero se transforma en sumamente tedioso y repetitivo para las últimas horas del juego.
El inicio es lento pero a la mitad el juego se pone bastante interesante. Los más entretenido es la interacción con los personajes pero incluso esto es muy limitado.
Solo lo recomiendo a los fans hardocre de Shin megami tensei por lo demás mantente alejado de este juego si no eres fan de los JRPG y de la cultura japonesa.

I held a weird amount of optimism for this game ever since it got announced on the Wii U. My optimism probably stemmed from the fact that this game rose from the ashes of what was originally announced as an SMT X Fire Emblem game.
I finally gave it a shot, and well… it was underwhelming. Fire Emblem characters have no business being in a J-pop themed universe, ripe with anime cliches and a boring cast for your party members. There’s so much text in this game, yet you gain absolutely nothing from taking the time to read it. Story tries to work, but doesn’t.
The rest of the game, gameplay wise, feels like a weaker SMT or Persona game. if you’ve played those this will feel familiar. That familiarity to a series that I love is one of the only redeeming factors of this game. Okay battle system, mediocre to bad dungeons, and decent boss battles. Exploring the city is pretty bland, and the side quests are really weak.
I wanted to like this game, but it wasn’t happening. I was tired of playing it at the 20 hour mark. Unfortunately it took me 20 additional painful hours of forcing myself to keep playing in order to complete it.

A improvement on the Wii U release, including all the dlc content plus some updated visuals. However, they still choose to leave the censorship in there, and it was universally for all releases. Doesn't matter if you get a euro, na, or jpn version. If you already have the wii u release, not worth upgrading to this version, especially if you have some of the uncensored releases.
