Valkyria Chronicles is, simply, one of the best tactical games you’ll ever play. It’s serious, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s emotionally compelling while never losing sight of the fact it’s also a game. It’s a popular and well-regarded game that, for whatever reason, people simply don’t talk about it enough. Hopefully with this PlayStation 4 release that will change.
The quality of the port and of the game itself make Valkyria Chronicles Remastered a must-play title for strategy fans who haven't cracked it yet. The proposition of a purchase might be a bit more fraught for vets who don't feel the need to revisit since there's no genuinely new content here, but there's no question that it's good to see this classic made available to new fans on a new console.

A game full of charm whose only flaw is not having more content especially considering its new game plus feature.
The story is charming and the setting is, in my opinion, well chosen. Characters feel organic and the earlier chapters manage to capture a good sense of morality and motivation for a war driven world.
The gameplay is a simple premise but it is executed flawlessly, with only some small quality of life aspects missing, like better information and some warnings before doing certain actions.
All in all a brilliant game, made even better by this remastered that does not take anything away, it just adds and improves.

A great remaster of a timeless classic RPG that must be experienced by anyone looking for a great combat system and memorable characters.
This was and still is a very challenging turn based tactics gem with cleverly induced real-time elements and a beautiful, timeless art design.
Eight years after it's initial release on PS3, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered come back in a new improved version that offers graphics in 1080p and 60fps, and for a very low price. A must have for Tactical RPG enthusiasts.
There should be no doubt that Valkyria Chronicles is a modern classic that has earned each one of its fans and accolades. As the game rolls on, the battle system shows itself to be both complex and intuitive, with enough depth that hours can be lost in a blink. While some might be put off by ponderous exposition, the overall package is sublime. Players who have not experienced it before really should give it a shot, but as there is no brand new content to be found in the remaster, those who have played the original to death need to decide if a graphical upgrade and trophy support is worth purchasing again.
While this is easily the best version of Valkyria Chronicles yet, it still doesn't quite live up to its potential.
It is the ultimate version of the game including the DLCs. I would describe the game as an epic strategic RPG set in a fictional version of our Europe in 1935. The mixture of good tactical battles, great characters and an immersive story won me over. Story: There is a war ongoing in (fictional) Europe between the superpowers of the East European Imperial Alliance (Where Russia is in our world) and the Atlantic Federation (Where Europe is in our world). While the Empire had an advantage early on because of technological superiority it is becoming more of a stagnant war. On the borders of both lies the neutral principality of Gallia (Like Swiss but in the region of Lithuania in our world). Because it is rich on resources especially on the precious Ragnite the Empire plans to capture it. The emperor himself will lead this operation while the other war is still ongoing. It is the story of the Militia Squad 7 from Gallia with leaders Welkin Guther who will participate in the war and have a significant part in it. The story is well written with twists and a mix of sad and joyful moments. It has one of the saddest moments in video game history for me. It does neither glorify war nor trivialize the causalities. You will see what conflicts are made of, injustice, discrimination, that good and bad people exist on both sides of conflicts and that freedom is not free. The characters are amazing. They all feel like they were real and alive. For the main characters there is a lot of development and progression. They growth, get scars by war and evolve. Also your squad members can die in battle and there is no chance to get them back (except New Game +). The gameplay is a mixture of development of your squad including equipment / weapons and tactical RPG. For the first you get experience points for battles (Better performance = more experience) and money. For the experience you can improve your squad and for the money improve your equipment. There are other benefits but you will get used to it without me describing them. In the battles you have turns and a limited amount of actions per turn (Officers add some if deployed). You see your units in a map and chose one. Now you are in a third person view and can maneuver them and take one action. Beware as enemies in shooting range will attack, movement range declines if used multiple times per turn, extra weapons like hand grenades are limited and you should end your turns covered as when you finish the enemy will do the same on their turn. There is more to it as you have different classes, a tank, obstacles and multiple approaches are often possible. The missions are interesting and you will have a lot of challenges in the game. The story and characters are well woven into them and make this excellent. The graphics are unique. The game looks like a water colour painting. It aged surprisingly well and I would like to buy an artbook for it. The soundtrack is amazing but mostly in a sneakingly way. It took me a while to recognize how good and fitting it is. Overall the game is impressive and an insider tip and hidden gem for all RPG and strategic game fans. Beware that it can be a bit challenging and will have sad moments. It is easily a 10/10 for me and it created a successful franchise because it was so good and unique.

A beautifully presented HD update of a PS3 tactical RPG. It's one of those anime-style games that you seem to spend as much time watching as playing, but the slightly corny cut scenes are mercifully skippable and the turn-based tactical stages are quite enjoyable if you like this type of thing. It doesn't have anything like the depth of XCOM or Advance Wars but it's a good example of the genre.

This game seems to be heavily inspired by the fire emblem series and somewhere in there seems to share similar aspects of the xcom game build. I don't think anyone can argue this is a beautiful looking game but many aspects of the combat are quite bad. The fire emblem series are fair throughout with some minor cheapness using reinforcements that appear out of nowhere. This game seems to have too many cheap moments of reinforcements to make the game difficult and this bores me silly. The game seems purposely designed around the cheapness rather than true rpg strategy. This is more a game of play, learn (memorize what will appear out of nowhere and proactively avoid and pre plan (cheat) next time). And this is the ultimate failure of the game. You do not utilize real strategy you try the game learn what's gonna happen then work around it more wisely the next try if necessary. It is a fun game but it loses its satisfaction and becomes boring. I will say the game does a fantastic job with artwork and personality but combat wise I'm pretty disappointed since I'm a gamer who prefers not to cheat whilst gaming and this game really makes you cheat to beat it.

This game does strategy like brawl does competitive. Only good thing is the jiggle physics and occasional fan service, would only recommend to weebs who prefer visuals and having to figure out everything on their own through a great many restarts. Everything in this title, from the god-awful immersion of the universe—Ie what's supposed to be the Axis using Char B1's, the creators of this game thinking the blitzkrieg was done by shock troopers instead of perfect conjunction between CAS and armored divisions, and the immense amount of contrivances from the first hour for the special snowflake protagonist made me had to a break right off the bat—to the 'combat' which gives horrible flashbacks of bullet sponges from Fallout 4.
I could go on, I really could, but I doubt this review is going to read on this old remaster. If you want actual strategy and game play, keep on browsing, but if you want a restart-fest akin to Fire Emblem Awakening on Lunatic...? Yeah, good luck with that.
