If you love the Assassin’s Creed games then this is one of the best, even though it’s not a million miles away from the stunning Origins.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey's open-world adventure through ancient Greece is a gorgeous thrill, and the best the series has ever been.

If you have the time and patience, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is worth a look, if not for the meandering plot and lore, than for the history porn, the earnest humor, and the massive, mystery-filled world.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey comes close to be the best title of the series to date, with a much-improved narrative design, an interesting main storyline and an overhauled gameplay inherited from last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Odyssey puts player freedom front and centre in a way the games never have before, while also taking in perhaps the most fun and gorgeous location we've seen so far.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey builds on everything good Origins introduced, but with a bit lower quality stories and adding some new systems that end up being not so impressive. Overall, though, it's still a very solid open world game with lots of content and some very gorgeous visuals. It won't amaze you as Origins did, but it'll still provide tens of hours of quality play.

Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it's a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting.

What you're getting here is a huge beautiful game world to explore on both land and sea set in the best setting: Ancient Greece. And you get to play exactly the way you want. Choice is the biggest addition here, allowing you choose dialogue options and make decisions that affect the story, choose your own playstyle; combat or stealth, you even get to choose to play as Alexios or Kassandra who have totally different personalities. I'm glad This franchise went full RPG because though it may be as good as the witcher, it comes pretty damn close.

One of the games of the year. 10/10.

IStarting with performance, on the Xbox One S the game runs smoothly with occasional drops in frame rate, which aren't the end of the world. I have had the game crash on me a couple of times, once resetting my progress by half an hour which was annoying. Moving on to core game play, combat is fun while requiring a bit of learning to fully get the hang of it. Sailing, while sometimes tedious can be fun once your ship is upgraded, but luckily is used sparingly throughout the story. The story itself isn't incredible, but still interesting enough to keep me interested and involved. And the voice acting, while on average good, can get to points of being downright horrible, but these moments are few and far between. The two protagonists you can choose from, Alexios and Kassandra, both have the same story, but it seems Kassandra is better acted than Alexios, from the two playthroughs I have made. The gear system is an improvement over that of Origins, giving you full control on how you want t build your character, along with the skill trees. The trees are also much simpler compared to Origins, but only allows you to have so many skills at one time. So while Origins was more complex, you would make more use of all of the skills in that game unlike Odyssey. The world that the game sets you in, Ancient Greece in 431 BC is very in depth and fully realized maintaining a historical accuracy. In conclusion, the game is fun and enjoyable with the introduction of complete RPG options and makes it one of my favorite games of the year. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. AC Odyssey is certainly not bad.
The World is absolutely breathtaking sometimes! The Synchronization Points offer great views!Graphically the Game also is awesome! The World might be huge and beautiful at times, it is empty, really empty. Some quests begin on one side of the Map, and actually are on the other side.
The Story itself is good. You follow in the steps of your parents and you discover a secret cult and anyy other things. But you just have to level up your character really really often, which is a HUGE Grind in a SOLO Game. Yet you can skip it, only for Money.
The Combat was a thing i loved in Odyssey. While it felt strange being a Spartan without a shield, it was bombastic and fun!
The Quests were alright. Some would start on one end of the map and lead you to another. And almost always after visiting Athens, you are told to level up your character to progress in the story. Thankfully, most of the Side Quests were pretty fun.
The Characters you meet are awesome too, they have got decent voice actors and really great Backstories.

    Verdict:
    In Overall, an 8/10.
While being a huge grind once you progress and having a beautiful, yet empty and way too big open World, the Combat, The Graphics and the Story are awesome!
I would consider Origins better than this, yet only slightly.

It was the first AC game in a while that felt worth playing. Odyssey, whilst not being overly innovative, continues the success. The game looks incredible, offering a greater variety in scenery and cities that is truly impressive. The narrative improves upon Origins, with Odyssey being a fitting title. The bounty mechanic and cult system offer long term goals that never feel overbearing.

On the other hand, the Hunter/Warrior/Assassin RPG elements don't work very well, as its never really possible to stick to one of these play styles. The combat is almost unavoidable, and it can often takes an age to kill enemies if you are unable to instantly assassinate or headshot (with necessary ability). Quest variety and enemy variety is still lacking also. There is also way too much legendary loot to find, unless your look to customise your ship/horse, where there is very little.

It has enough content to keep you playing until you forget what you're playing for. Its as fun as the last game. Even so, it's still not able to reach the heights better games in the genre have managed to reach.

I just registered a meta critic account for the first time today so I could rate this game, because it is that awful. It is the worst experience I’ve ever had with an Assassin’s Creed game, having played almost every one of them since the beginning. They took all of the good elements from AC: Origins (which was actually a great and fun game) and threw them all in the trash. Ubisoft Quebec, which remains a stain on the Ubisoft brand and name, have tried to turn the AC franchise into an action RPG in the most superficial ways possible. They added dialogue options into Assassin’s Creed for the first time ever, not because it adds to the story and the franchise, but because almost every game nowadays has dialogue options so AC has to have it now too. They give you a preset character (either Alexis or Kassandra) who has their own character traits and morals that show up in mocaped cutscenes you can’t interact with, but at the same time give you the option to turn that character into a murderous psychopath who can kill entire villages of civilians and acts like a dick to everyone. There’s no feeling of immersion or relatability to this character since there really is no character, and they are completely susceptible to violent mood swings based entirely on your whim. The “story” is poorly written by AC standards, is horribly paced, ends abruptly and PALES in comparison to Origins. “Exploring” this vast open world becomes a chore when you realize almost every location in the game is just a bandit or soldier camp where the enemies will just attack you on sight. Sure, location variety was a problem in Origins, but they’ve doubled down on the lack of variety in this game. The cities and towns in this game are designed with no free running potential, so the parkour which has become a staple of this franchise is nearly absent. The visuals are somehow mostly worse than in Origins, a game two years older running on the same engine, with noticeable downgrades in lighting and fire effects, facial animations, and the environments in general. And the combat system is (in my opinion) the worst part of this game. They somehow managed to create a combat system that copies most of the mechanics from Origins but is objectively worse in every way. They completely removed the ability to use a shield, so if you liked that from Origins, it’s gone. The attacks in this game don’t feel or look nearly as weighty or have as much impact as they do in Origins. The cardinals sin though, and the thing that makes this combat system so bad, is that every single enemy is a damage sponge that can tank a ridiculous amount of hits before going down, just like in AC: Syndicate. Every enemy, from the big beefy hoplites with heavy shields and armor, to the archers and marksmen who are wearing no armor, all take a ridiculous amount of hits to kill, which turns the combat system (which should be this game’s biggest strength) into a tedious chore that you try to avoid at all costs. But it’s not like you can avoid it completely, since most enemies can’t even be killed with an assassination from stealth in one hit. Sure that was a problem with Origins too, but there are way more enemies that will survive a stealth assassination in this game than in Origins, which completely ruins the point of playing like an assassin, since trying to assassination an enemy will just have that enemy alerted to you and not dead, and then alert the other guards around you as well. Oh and you can also drive a boat I guess. I don’t know, that sort of seems like an after thought in this game, and is definitely not nearly as well done as the naval portion of Black Flag was. I passionately hate this game, and I will never be playing anything made by Ubisoft Quebec ever again. Expand
