As the description of the plot implies, Doomblade is a delightfully grimdark story and world. Every creature and environment is ugly or disturbing in some way, and whenever you get into any serious combat the soundtrack starts blaring out heavy metal music. In a world of pastel-colored indie games the stress how cozy and none-threatening they are, Doomblade is a welcome change of pace.
Doomblade has a strong hook and an engaging core gameplay loop. The idea of attack-as-movement transforms how players see environments and approach the world. All Metroidvania systems are implemented well, especially the escalating upgrades that allow Gloom Girl to basically break the rules of this universe as she searches for the Dread Lords. The game is also demanding. It takes some time to learn how to properly use the attack move and then how to master it and other abilities to deal with capable bosses. Doomblade’s universe is not as interesting as its core mechanic but mixing combat and movement into one action is special enough to keep players trying to find and end the Dread Lords.
Doomblade is awesome. Rarely do gameplay, level design and art design blend together this seamlessly. Truly a joy from start to finish. Exploring the world always felt meaningful. Speed running the game felt like a fresh challenge as well. Together with Elden ring Doomblade is my favorite game from the last ten years and my second favorite 2D metrovania after Super metroid.
Cheers!
P.S Doomblade is clearly meant to be played with keyboard and mouse. Unlike most, if not all, other platformers this game is NOT enjoyable with a controller.
Gracias.
All in all, DOOMBLADE excels as a Metroidvania and is worth your attention. I was incredibly addicted to its control scheme and its combat despite its few faults. By the time I reached the final boss, I felt challenged in all the right ways. Considering its disruptiveness, I highly recommend DOOMBLADE for Metroidvania fans who desire something new, especially those who’re playing with a controller.
DOOMBLADE is a fast-paced metroidvania title that blends twin-stick shooter mechanics. With tons of enemies and challenging boss battles, it puts your skills to the test. If you enjoy games with minimal hand-holding, this is the perfect choice for you!
Doomblade is an incredible action-fest through a lively but broken underground world, and while one of its final major encounters is almost painfully non-fun, the journey there is irresistibly engaging from start to almost-finish.
I really hate dunking on a cute, creative Metroidvania like DOOMBLADE, but I feel it just fails to make the game approachable and enjoyable. Much as I wanted to get lost in this dark, humorous world, the core mechanics never got more intuitive or fun, making the entire experience a slog. That said, there’s definitely a great game in here somewhere for those willing to push through the pain to find it.

worth it full price

- 6 - 9 hour long.
-glitches, small map , aim lock need work, long loading time and annoying final boss.
-creative 2d metroidvania and good lvl design.
As someone who enjoys metroidvanias and would rank them at the top of my list of favourite game styles, Doomblade attempts too much and succeeds at little. The concepts are great, the artwork is great, and the core mechanics are workable, but demonstrate deep flaws when put to the test. Overall movement is fine, though can be clunky when precision is required. Where the game can become frustrating is during situations where randomness takes over. On one hand, this can be fun, on the other it will border impossible tasks since the game randomizes enemy location during certain battles. Luck becomes too great of a factor and takes away any enjoyment it may have offered.
Will you enjoy it? Parts will entertain you. But, once you start familiarizing yourself with the fast travel (which is horrible) and the lack of tightness in the controls, you'll be left grinding for the satisfaction of saying you've completed it, though you'll rather forget you ever played it in the first place.
