Whether you played the 2004 version of Mario vs. Donkey Kong or are just stepping into the series, I recommend giving this remake a go. It’s a fun game that feels great to play and offers a good challenge, and because it was a game initially made for GBA, it’s good for pick-up-and-play bursts. It’s also a nice change of pace from typical Mario games, and a great example of the sort of creative, unique titles that came out of the GBA era (and have aged well).
It's a challenging, fun and ingenious remake, outside the usual platforming molds, but it's a bit too short and repeats some of the battles against Donkey Kong.
This remake maybe isn't the one we were hoping for, but it is a good and faithful one, sitting tightly in the "this is just how I remembered it was" category, all while adding some new features, game modes and worlds.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong, a remake of a classic for Game Boy Advance, is a well designed hybrid between a platform and a puzzle game. The multiplayer is a great addition, and the music really stands out. Anyway, it's clearly an handheld game: the levels and the adventure are short, and the level design too schematic. It's twenty years old, after all.
There's a lot that could have been better with this revamped version of Mario vs. Donkey Kong. Some of the shortcuts taken could certainly have been embellished with a slightly bigger budget. The lesson is probably that Game Boy Advance games, and all the limitations they had, don't hold up very well when translated to modern consoles.
As someone who's never played the GBA original, Mario vs. Donkey Kong on Switch was well worth the money in my book. As Nintendo kept churning out Mario vs. Donkey Kong games with very little variation between them year after year from the late Wii - DS era to throughout the Wii U - 3DS era, I think it was way too easy for the game that (technically) started it all to be pushed aside, which is a shame, because I really enjoyed my time with its remake. It's a lot more methodical and slower paced compared to your typical Mario platformer, and while I think I prefer that more typical style, this one no doubt has its merits. Namely, this is probably one of the most relaxing games I've played recently. The slower pace mixed with puzzles and especially the soundtrack all work together to create a very chill vibe which I adore. It's no wonder Nintendo included a more casual gameplay style which only makes its **** potential even greater. Even with that said, Mario vs. Donkey Kong is not a game that's going to blow your mind, and I can completely understand why so many people don't like the fact it's only $10 less than a full priced Nintendo game, but again, I never played the original so this still felt fresh to me. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed my time with Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and would easily recommend it to anyone who's willing to pay close to full price or anyone who finds it used for less. Here's hoping we can get a brand-new game in this style on the next Nintendo system.
It's a fairly simple and fun puzzle game, I always wanted to try the Mario vs DK series and this was a pleasant surprise. The gameplay is easy to understand and anyone can try. The accessibility is also on point, having an "easy mode" for the ones who want a more relaxed experience. However, thought the game was a bit lacking. The game's price isn't worth it considering how much it has to offer, so I recommend getting it on a sale. It doesn't have much substantial new content, as expected from a full blown remake, with the new additions being only two new worlds (i think a level maker and an online play would be perfect for this title). This is more of a pet peeve, but Nintendo also omitted some iconic lines of dialogue from the cutscenes and the more "explicit" death scenes performed by Mario, but this last one is understandable. It isn't a perfect game but it's far from being bad or even mediocre.
The game is short, but it is kinda fun, specially for me that got it for free, thanks based 'knocked over delivery truck'. But when I saw the official price, good lord, does anyone really buy this? Nowadays a game like this should be a free to play mobile game
the controls are impossibly bad for a series that prides itself on platforming finesse. everything feels wooden and unresponsive, and the entire concept just seems like an all around worse, hobbled version of other 2d mario games. it truly feels like this entire game should come free on the side with something like mario wonder, because it's a flagrant and soulless cash grab.
if i had never played a mario game before, i might enjoy this for what it is, but the franchise has shown they can do much, much better, and i don't see any reason to release such an objectively inferior version of their tried and true games. if you want to play this, just emulate it on the GBA, because the controls are apparently better than the remake 20 some years later.
