A pacey, exciting game, MindSeize excels when it pits you one-on-one against one of its varied, aggressive bosses, but there are no elements of this little gem that aren't up to scratch. You're constantly moving forward and getting better at it, and the level design is good stuff. We don't feel like the Metroidvania backtracking really adds much to the experience, but it didn't spoil our fun. What we have here, ultimately, is a fantastic action game that's been forced into the shape of a markedly less brilliant Metroidvania, a format that doesn't play to the game's strengths. So, very good indeed, but could definitely have been a classic with a little more structure.
Awesome animations, pixelart direction quality S+++, animations, atmosphere, huge bosses,... is a true pure Super Metroid inspired game, not cloned, with brush strokes from Rockman. It could be perfectly on top 10 of all-time (excluding Metroid and Castlevania Series) MV games :)
Solid Metroidvania game. The difficulty is up to my liking, and for those who prefer an easier go, there is an "Easy mode" you can enable in the settings to adjust the gameplay to your preference.
The music is a mix of tame techno/electro music, fitting the setting of the game. It's not overbearing, and keeps it smooth for the gameplay.
The gameplay is super smooth, and as you get more and more powers, you can sprint through the different sections of the game. There is also a lot of shortcuts that allows you to move even faster from section to section.
Level design is smart. You get a few hints that something might be hidden in different places, but cannot obviously get there yet. A lot of backtracking involved, but makes it worthwhile to go back to earlier levels when you get new powers.
The story is decent, lost me a bit on it. I believe it would be more for personal preference, but I wanted to mention it.
Overall, super solid game. Had loads of fun playing the few hours I have played so far, and will be spending more time on it in the very near future. Definitely a contender for a 100% completion from me.
MindSeize is a modest game, both in aspirations and budget, and you can feel it in the execution. The plot and scenes are bland, a very well known gameplay circle that don't surprise... A game that moves in a well known terrain and don't risk a little... but can entertain you if classic 2D metroidvania is your thing.
Whilst it has a plot about as generic as it is boring, MindSeize makes up for it with some cracking Metroidvania-like gameplay. It will test you at times, but the sense of accomplishment outweighs the frustration. Just ignore the story.
MindSeize will certainly scratch the itch if you’re in the market for a decent Metroidvania game with a focus on challenging combat and enjoyable exploration. While somewhat marred by a clichéd and clumsily-executed story and some occasionally-frustrating gameplay moments, it’s nonetheless a solid offering with beautiful visuals that will appeal to fans of the classics.
A well-crafted Metroidvania, which pretty much plays like a 2D Metroid infused with DNA of late Mega Man titles. Tough difficulty, which got well-balanced through tight controls and a very varied move-set for the player. Players which are less skilled in harder action-platformer games have an Easy Mode available, which will manipulate the damage and enemy behavior a fair bit to their favor.
There's four different planets to visit, each with it's distinctive settings, but still strong variance in the areas. Bossfights all need different tactical approaches and are one of the highlights in the game, along with the exploration - there's a ton of cleverly hidden and interesting upgrades to find.
Beating the game for the first time without a guide took me about 18 hours, so the game's length is pretty decent too, while not overstaying it's welcome. I can wholeheartedly recommend MindSeize!
PS: I played the original PC version back in February and the polish since then is simply incredible, kudos to the devs for improving so much on an already decent game!
There's lots to love about this game - excellently designed enemies and rooms, the art style is gorgeous, the music is for the most part great and there are a bunch of cool power ups. However, a lot of the boss fights aren't particularly strategic at all, it's more about spamming the melee button as close to them as possible, while they teleport around dishing out over powered wallops. There's one boss in particular, where you have to deal with rifle shots, two spinning electrical wheels, a burning floor, a shockwave along the floor AND seemingly randomly dropped grenades that tend to land straight in your face. There's literally no place to escape - your only chance of survival is getting a bit lucky whilst trying to dodge the million things coming at you while spamming shots on the boss. The guns you get are sadly all too run of the mill - it would be a lot more interesting if you'd have to think more about strategy when it came to boss fights, which guns to use etc - but in a lot of them, you just need to get lucky (or simply replay the boss 50+ times).
There's a very good game here, if you can stand the sometimes infuriating boss fights (this is coming from someone who struggled with, but barely got frustrated by, Hollow Knight's bosses, for instance).
A solid Metroidvania platformer that delivers on gameplay and exploration, but falls hard on plot and while fun to play, isn't very memorable or unique overall.
The pros - large world to explore, lots of power-ups, many secret passages to find, solid controls. Very fun exploration. It has the core of what makes a good Metroidvania clone. If you just want a solid clone game to enjoy platforming and finding powerups, you will enjoy the 10-15 hours in this game.
The cons - The biggest for me was the plot. The game promises a "deep" plot written by a profession writer, but it completely fails here. The game brings up interesting Sci-Fi concepts, like the goals of the Ascended and the concept and issues of transfering a human mind into a machine construct, but ultimately does nothing with these. Nothing is really explored, no character development or story twists, and none of it is tied back into the gameplay in any way. The game never progresses or changes from the opening story line of "cyborgs took my daughter's mind, hunt them down and get her back". The ending itself is also a big letdown with almost no payoff after defeating the final boss. The other drawbacks is the lack of anything new or memorable to add to this genre. While it is a solid clone, it doesn't really try to do anything new or at least do anything with the visuals or gameplay that make it stand out. It's a very "safe" game. You have basic melee and weapon attacks, the standard movement techs of sliding, double jumps, wall jumps, etc, but that is about it. There is also this drone that follows you around but aside from occasionally shooting at enemies, opening a few doors/obstacles, and "hacking" a few enemies in the game, it does very little and you don't really interact with it or control it ever.
So in summation, a solid platformer that is an enjoyable experience if 16-bit inspired Metroidvania style games are your thing. If that's all you need, you will enjoy your time here. If you come here looking for something new or unique for a platformer or an engaging story to explore, then you will be disappointed.
SummaryMindSeize is a 2D Metroidvania game set in a Sci-Fi-universe. You must explore untamed planets, fight powerful enemies and defeat a mysterious organization that stole the mind of your daughter.
