    Black Mermaid’s Moonscars is a tough game that has a thick amount of creativity in both story and presence. Not all its pieces work perfectly, but enough work to warrant a hard look at this title.

    Moonscars is a beautiful, grimdark homage to the Soulsborne genre, with engaging art and challenging action. Not everything is well explained, and both the game’s narrative and mechanics can feel unnecessarily opaque. It takes some time and effort to master Moonscars’ combat and systems, but the effort is worth the reward. It can be punishing, but only rarely feels unfair, and it’s one of those games that will probably compel you to keep inching forward.

    Black Mermaid debuts with a brutal and punitive action but at the same time manages to give great satisfaction once you have learned the different nuances that characterize its gameplay. Moonscars is an adventure with few flaws and boldly draws from the worlds of soulslike and metroidvania to propose a series of interesting solutions, the Moon and temporary enhancements above all, which make every single session almost always unpredictable and exciting.

    Moonscars is a soulslike (although ‘lite’ would better describe it) with a very evocative visual style and well-written characters. The gameplay is also good, but it suffers from a certain lack of enemy variety and a poor balance of character options, especially egregious when it comes to special weapons. Still, it’s not a bad game by any means, but the competition is fierce in the 2D metroidvania / soulslike genre and standing out is not an easy feat.

    Black Mermaid understood the ideas that made the 2D Soulslike genre successful and added new mechanics that reflect its own identity. If it didn't have flaws like story being too messy and combat having balance issues, it could have made its mark among the best examples of the genre.

    Moonscars is a deep, dark tale about what makes us human in our darkest times and how we persevere. When it works, it really works and was some of the most fun I had playing 2-D souls-like in recent memory. But it is riddled with balancing issues and loses touch on what makes Souls-likes fun in the name of difficulty.

    Pretty good metroidvania with some really good gameplay. A few bugs tho bu other than that its a pretty fun indie game

    The game has good gameplay, although quite simple. The graphics are excellent for a PixelArt and the environments are just as good! The storyThe game has good gameplay, although quite simple. The soundtrack is amazing, especially when we're facing a boss! The negative point of this game is clearly the character evolution, because unlike souls like, here we can't evolve the character's stats, only the spells. Which makes the character's evolution very limited, so the game becomes a little tiring towards the end. Also because, as there is no character evolution, to make the game difficult at the end, they only put more enemies on the screen, which makes the game frustrating. In my case, I died more in the final map than in the entire game up until then. Another downside is the variety of enemies, there aren't many different enemies. But for an indie game, I thought the game was amazing and I recommend it to all video game fans!… Expand

    Keyboard rebind in game is bugged. Some keys looks like they changed, but they stay the same and they refuse to be changed. As it is, it's unplayable.
