An amazing marriage of world-class storytelling and strategic card gaming, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a fantastic RPG in its own right.

The Witcher Tales is a strange potion that is surprisingly good. From a logical point of view, a game that mixes so many genres together can’t be this amazing, but then comes CDPR, a company that is just unable to develop bad titles.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales could have been a lackluster, uninspired spinoff in an attempt to capitalize off the Witcher’s success, but it is so much more than that. Sure, I have some minor gripes, such as the lack of a mini-map and guide markers, or the anticlimactic final battle, but they all seem trivial when looking at what Thronebreaker accomplishes as a whole. The intricately layered story and carefully crafted characters and writing are some of the best I’ve seen this year, and the card play is more rewarding than it’s ever been before. Whether or not you are a fan of the Witcher series, or even card games in general, Thronebreaker deserves your attention.

The standalone Gwent release is free on GOG, and I encourage those who enjoy it to shell out the money for Thronebreaker, a strong expansion of both the base game and the Witcher universe. Geralt’s portion of this story may have concluded, but the folks at CD Projekt RED seem committed to sharing more tales from this world, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a tough and pure RPG without compromise, with a great card-based combat system.

It's a spin-off of a spin-off that improbably couples the lighthearted but surprisingly complex mechanics of the free-to-play multiplayer Gwent: The Witcher Card Game with the dark, moral storytelling of Wild Hunt.

Thronebreaker struggles as a card game but excels as a Witcher game due to its rich narrative and excellent, if simple, worldbuilding.

Battle card game may be too easy, even in a hard mode, but for me it's not a problem. "Puzzle" card games are challenging enough. Expand

This game is a must have for every witcher games or books fan.

What was supposed to be a free singleplayer content inside gwent witcher game. Turned out into a great addition to the witcher universe and its story.

Story depicts a Second Northern War from a very interesting point of view queen of Lyria and Rivia Meve. Game often makes you choose between two or more hard decisions. Almost every decision can affect the game in some way.
The game also adds some new interesting characters and stories which weren't known before. Everything fits very well to the harsh witcher series.

Gwent combat system is interesting and doesn't get boring for the most part. What i had a problem with is the difficulty in battles with your deck that you can upgrade throughout the game. You don't really need to build any specific deck for any encounters, not even in the hardest difficulty. You can steamroll most fights with random deck with no synergies. What made me stay interested in the gwent combat were the puzzles and custom deck battles which felt unique and some even challenging.
The only fight which was hard was the very last one. I actually had to change my deck to counter his.
Hopefully devs will make the future witcher tales more difficult in terms of combat.

Art style is unique and fits very well. Voice-acting and music are excellent and immersive.

It's a story- and choice-driven RPG with Gwent (the card game known from The Witcher 3) as the main game mechanic (and sole means of combat). Narration and dialogues are plentiful, and the quality of their writing in my opinion surpasses many actual novels, and the voice acting is at the same level. I deeply connected with most of the main characters, which doesn't happen that often in games! The impact of the choices made in the game is so deep that at times it felt like the game was not written, but it was genuinely responding to what I was doing. The implementation of Gwent was fantastic, especially after I really got into it, but at times suffers from balance issues (nothing major though). Top it off with truly gorgeous visual game design and great music, and you've got a hell of a game! Unfortunately it started dragging for me after like 30 hours (out of the 47h it took me to finish it), because Gwent can be repetitive, especially after you figure out some good tactics, and there's not much else to it other than talking and collecting wood. Graphically it looks very appealing, story wise it's very intriguing, and the gameplay is awesome. Gwent is a great game, which is very easy to understand, but still manages to create plenty of depth to play around with. The only downside to this game is the ending, which was basically unbeatable for me because of a horrible setup in the game. Expand
