An amazing marriage of world-class storytelling and strategic card gaming, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a fantastic RPG in its own right.

The Witcher Tales is a strange potion that is surprisingly good. From a logical point of view, a game that mixes so many genres together can’t be this amazing, but then comes CDPR, a company that is just unable to develop bad titles.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales could have been a lackluster, uninspired spinoff in an attempt to capitalize off the Witcher’s success, but it is so much more than that. Sure, I have some minor gripes, such as the lack of a mini-map and guide markers, or the anticlimactic final battle, but they all seem trivial when looking at what Thronebreaker accomplishes as a whole. The intricately layered story and carefully crafted characters and writing are some of the best I’ve seen this year, and the card play is more rewarding than it’s ever been before. Whether or not you are a fan of the Witcher series, or even card games in general, Thronebreaker deserves your attention.

The standalone Gwent release is free on GOG, and I encourage those who enjoy it to shell out the money for Thronebreaker, a strong expansion of both the base game and the Witcher universe. Geralt’s portion of this story may have concluded, but the folks at CD Projekt RED seem committed to sharing more tales from this world, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a tough and pure RPG without compromise, with a great card-based combat system.

It's a spin-off of a spin-off that improbably couples the lighthearted but surprisingly complex mechanics of the free-to-play multiplayer Gwent: The Witcher Card Game with the dark, moral storytelling of Wild Hunt.

Thronebreaker struggles as a card game but excels as a Witcher game due to its rich narrative and excellent, if simple, worldbuilding.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a perfect game. If you are done with it, then try Gwent: The Witcher Card Game.

AndLook, I just hope CDP will sell it, it's just awesome, i mean i,ve been playing games since Prince of Persia 1 or, hell, Dizzzy in CGA! And this. This is outstanding. Easy mechanics (i mean if you can read ;), easy to understand, seems mediocre at first sight BUUUT MAAAN it grips you right from the start. Story isn't nothing new. but it's well told, well presented and with a twist. Music, encounters, effects. This game is just perfect example of (not so) low budget lo and behold, absolutely great in giving you the entertainment without needless grind. Love it. Price to fun ratio is beyiond MetaCritic scale. Buy it Full price, it's worth it. And if you happen to be an Etherlords or Magic: Planewalkers fan, it's a no brainer. Expand

I am surprised how good the story is given that this is side installement of the game. It is engaging and faithful to the books.

    Pros:
+ Suprisingly engaging story with many twists. It is building on story from the books but is not altering it.
+ Amazing soundtrack. You will end up humming it along during card battles.
+ Stylized graphics that is a good fit for this ganre. It looks well in every situation.
+ Variety of styles of the card battles. Some have special rules, some are logic puzzles and some are just different game built with the mechanic (e.g. there is a "memo" battle).
+ Your choices changes some aspects of the story. Especially who will be at your side during the journey.

    Cons:
    – Very linear structure of the game. Every map was a straight line. There was no illusion of open world or branching paths.
    – "Lesser evil" choices. Sometimes I felt like I was punished for trying to be good. What is worse, that was done after a few hours and without warning.
    – Random "standard battles". Full 3-round battles were boring when there was no stakes. They were good for story battles, but boring while encountering a random monster in the woods.
    – Scaled map during overland travel. A village is a single hut and your army is represented with a model of queen Meve. I did not feel the scale or how my army grows.

Additional words on the story: The story is engaging and faithfull to the books. It does not alter but rather fill in blank spaces in the source material. There is only a little overlap with the story from the books but it is executed perfectly. If you know how Meve and Geralt met, you will be waiting for the moment and you will be excited when it happens. It is so much better from what Netflix is currently doing with the plot.

Graphically it looks very appealing, story wise it's very intriguing, and the gameplay is awesome. Gwent is a great game, which is very easy to understand, but still manages to create plenty of depth to play around with. The only downside to this game is the ending, which was basically unbeatable for me because of a horrible setup in the game. Expand
